I want another Mario game like this with each world based on a larger overlapping theme instead of the generic grass world, fire world, ice world, water world, castle world, cave world, etc.

yeah i remember when i got this for christmas with a gamecube and thought it was great and then when i got a wii and got galaxy, i thought it was the shittiest thing ever bc it just seemed so small, low effort and had no real world and theme to it. it turns out most 3d mario games are like this. to me this is the only 3d mario game that is good. like the 2d games like super mario world actually have a fully realized world too.

They can't, the 3D platforming Mario games peaked here.

    They can't.
    That's it. They simply can't.
Every game has it's apex, and for 3D Mario, it was Sunshine. No questions asked.
    Zoomers will never know, unfortunately.

Some zoomers discovered it when it had a rerelease. My zoomer friends were losing it over how soul filling it is.

Sunshine hit the perfect balance in level size and theming, each level feels like an actual place instead of a setpiece created just so you can find the main collectable in it like Galaxy and 64. Odyssey does this too and came pretty close, but the levels are a little too large and the moons feel meaningless because for every moon you have to work for there's like 10 you find just by walking a few feet, also the world tour made it lack a consistent theme throughout besides hats I guess which really doesn't compare to Sunshine's tropical vacation.
Also FLUDD is a great mechanic and makes Sunshine feel the best to play out of all the 3d marios and it's not even close.

Even though it got progressively harder for my dumbass child mind, I enjoyed every new level for how comfy they were

No there won't be a 3D Mario that surpasses Shitshine in awfulness.

odyssey is mechanically tighter and objectively, a better designed game. however, Mario did peak with sunshine. this game is more memorable than any other in the series.

      >objectively better designed game
There were way too many moons all over the place which made them nowhere near as satisfying to collect as power stars or shine sprites.

Design comes down to more than just mechanics. The thematic harmony in Sunshine combined with the continuity of each background npc you recognize in the same level as it progresses, it makes the world feel alive and tangible. The player can suspend disbelief more easily and immerse themselves in the world. Mario games forgot how to do that.

If I could bottle the moment in time where I played through this game during a stinking hot summer, I would be rich. Nothing has come close to the kino.

When Sunshine released on GC I HATED it and how everyone loved it. I was a dumb edgy teen. I couldn't stand all the bright sunshine heh and friendly beach resort town people and most of all I hated the idea of FLUDD. Thought it was just a dumb gimmick that made Sunshine "not a real Mario game."

Flashforward to 2015-2017 and my Dolphin emulation phase. Saw Sunshine and thought why the frick not? Started playing and sucked at the game badly. I played around to get used to it and by the third level it clicked. I ended up getting all collectables and had a blast. The difficulty was just right, the level and task variety were good, the FLUDD mechanic was brilliant. I'm not good at platforming but by 2/3 of Sunshine I felt like an expert doing all sorts of tricks. I got 100%, saw the ending and I craved for more Sunshine but it was over. Then I had the smart idea to redownload SM64 because it's good ol' SM64. And all my FLUDD skills meant nothing. Couldn't triple jump, wall jump and the fricking camera. I don't get it. As a kid SM64 was amazing and when I watch speedruns of it they do everything smoothly and they praise how good the controls were but I can't do it. Sunshine I thought I wouldn't be able to play but I felt good about my control skill.

tl;dr I was a dumb prejudiced teen when Sunshine released and missed out on one my favorite 3D platformers for more than a decade. Don't judge a book=game by its cover!
Why the frick are my old Sunshine screenshots so dark?

      Because you're wearing sunglasses, nerd.

sunglasses LITERALLY darken the game, you have to ask to get them

It will never be beaten. I genuinely don’t understand why people hate it so much F all. It’s the best Mario game and always will be.

Mario 64 PC port with expanded moveset is objectively the best 3D platformer ever made.
Literally no argument can be made against it.

What did they add to the moveset

i'd say 64 is still the best mechanically and control wise.
