It’s a fine cautionary tale against a character intentionally acting like an annoying little shit. Yes, it sells us when the other characters cringe. But then it also has the effect of making the audience cringe, and maaaybe that’s not the kind of reaction that they want their heroes to be eliciting, just like we don’t need to see the strained look in their face when they’re taking a fat shit

      Worked for Don Quixote

Cringe humor also worked for The Office because it is a means of adding realistic emotional depth to an otherwise pedestrian and ordinary setting, and fit nicely with Don Quixote’s theme of a fantasy world inside a man’s head coming to terms with ugly, cynical boring reality. But the overall consensus seems to be that it’s a bad fit on a character that is supposed to be a sports Chad turned heroic savior of the world who gets the tradgirl virgin waifu

Interesting insight. What tale does this scene tell?

They’re basically smacking you in the manboobs for liking such a girlie fruity pretty pretty princess dress-up game like FFX-2. My advice to you is never let friends or family catch you loving the shit out of it and when the cringe singing scenes come around, mute and blast System of a Down or something so they never suspect a thing

It’s no different from Hunter gatherer girls going for the best hunters and leaving the berry pickers lonely and frustrated. Deal with it

Tidus wouldn't make fun of people because he's a nice and well adjusted young man who people can both rely on and look up to. I have absolutely no problem meeting women, impressing them, or making them feel special. I choose not to frick them because I neither want used goods nor do I want to disgrace them after ruining them in the past with my lust. The massive copium coming off everything you post is quite frankly pathetic. You've been trained to think by a cult who literally didn't know about female orgasms until 50 years ago and still has it's founding members frick the youngest ones in initiation. You're a fricking tool. You're a thing that's literally owned, sculpted, and destroyed at the whims of a psychopath whose systematic abuse you worship as though it were justice. Your ancestors weep with shame at the humiliation you inflict upon yourself with every breath you continue to draw. You're not cool, you're not a "real man", you're not on the winning team. You're a manchild who got butt-molested by a weird old man with a limp left handed hand shake.

            Anonymous

And what do kids do when their dad punches down at them? They mimic that behavior at others especially when they have athletic talent and know they can get away with it. We only got to know Tidus after he faced death multiple times and was stranded far from his comfort zone in a world where everybody was a stranger, but let’s not forget he spent most of it not giving two craps about their traditions or sacred rituals or their stifling conformity culture which says that summoners have to die and dabbed on anyone trying to stop him. He broke all the rules and made Yuna’s panties moist in the process. Total Chad behavior

I'll interpret this as you surrendering without further argument

anon this is clearly homosexual behavior

Tidus likes girls. Like actually likes them, he's not forcing himself to have what you call "sex" with them because he wants gay approval from his dad. His dad is an actual person to him believe it or not.

Even putting that aside, Jecht was a real man and a faithful lover. The only thing getting in the way of him spending time with his family was his duty as a hero and a provider.

                Anonymous

No clearly homosexual behavior would be Tidus getting spitroasted by Ronsos, or maybe grabbing fistfuls of Auron’s chest hair as he ruts his member between Tidus’s thighs

                > Tidus likes girls.
He even has the option to put the moves on Rikku and Lulu even though he is “officially” courting Yuna. Clearly the sign of somebody with mommy issues if he is that desperate for female companionship which brings me to my next point.

                > His dad is an actual person to him believe it or not.
Tidus flat out admits that if he met his dad he’d sock him the moment he saw him, and spends basically the entire game seething about his dad being such a huge dick that Tidus’s mom neglected him because she was too busy gargling Jecht’s ballsack and only stopped when Jecht was all like “you’d better check on him before he starts crying again”. Jecht was a turbochad and that’s what made him so based and all Tidus was trying to do was live up to that

I want to spend more time talking about how Tidus was following in his father’s footsteps to becoming a true Chad and part of that is learning your place in the hierarchy of other men so you know who you have to fistfight in order to climb up the ranks and that’s why Jecht spent Tidus’s entire childhood dabbing on him so Tidus would toughen up into a proper alpha male with an attitude problem and that’s why Tidus wouldn’t even let an entire religion push him around and get in the way of scoring some trad pussy

              Anonymous

That doesn't negate what the other anon said. One of the key points of X was Tidus growing from a spoiled crybaby into someone that could be relied upon to lead others.

                Anonymous

When does he cry or act spoiled? He resents his Dad for showing tough love and walking out on them but keeps it together better than most would. From almost the moment he meets the party he is calling his own shots (entering temples, not caring about their religion, etc) and even though they were already planning the pilgrimage before he got there, it ended up being a completely unique pilgrimage with twists and turns that stem almost entirely from Tidus’s influence. It’s hard to imagine Yuna turning down the offer of marriage to Seymour without Tidus in the picture influencing her decisions

                Anonymous

If anything he mostly just grows from undirected non-specific outrage to having a laser focused indignation towards actual injustices. As a person who just thinks about and cares about other people he essentially doesn't change and is already mature.

You're right OP. Any well adjusted emotionally complete human being can relate to this scene in a mature way because they don't feel compulsive insecurity for Tidus who is ultimately a separate person who is just developing psychologically on his own pace. They don't have an ingrained knee jerk gut reaction that makes them feel second hand embarrassment because that's an artifact of external morality. Something which is designed for children and to be blunt, the stupid, to control them so that they don't act out in society and do harm to the tribe. The people who still don't get it 20 years later (20 YEARS) are unironically in a state of arrested development and feel shame and fear about an invisible bully or authority figure who lives rent free in their head.

Gamers are still far behind when it comes to understanding intentionally framed discomfort. I won't even defend the device or claim any game used it well, but its obvious many don't even understand it.
YIIK is the most blatant game-analogous example I can think of for this (with Alex being constantly manipulated and delusionally selfish). There's so much intentionally and obviously brought forth through dialogue, inconsistencies in facts, and whatnot. They just can't tune into it even when its the main crux of the game (to the point where world building and basic character development are out the window).
