Itching for some RTS gameplay despite the fact that I've never really played any RTS games. I've always sucked at them and considered them too competitive for me. Which RTS games have the best single-player campaigns to get into the genre?

Don't worry about multiplayer if you don't want to, the majority of players never touch competitive MP at all. It's just a very loud minority talking about Starcraft 2 matches all day
Games just off the top of my head:
    >Red Alert 1 and 2
    >Warcraft 3
    >Starcraft 1 and 2
    >Age of Empires 1 and 2
    >Dawn of War

That’s exactly what I’ll do. I’ve always dismissed RTS campaigns as prolonged tutorials for the competitive side of the game, but that ends today! I’ll play through a bunch of RTS campaigns during the fall.

Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War, I was blown away by how good the story was in that game. It's also a really good multiplayer game too. If you like Warcraft 3 you will feel right at home, there's races that are similar but their own thing. The gameplay is also a bit different, it's more about squads of units than it is about producing a lot of units from buildings.

I just played through the new WH40K shooter, so Dawn of War sounds great. As for Warcraft 3, I’ve only played mods. Had to include a picture and since I haven’t played anything, WC3 was the first game that came to mind.

      Go play Medieval 2 instead

I can recommend dawn of war 2, I enjoyed it quite a lot plus the customization for your heroes is pretty great. WC3 is the GOAT imo so go play that if you haven't already.

Never played RTS online and was always bad at them. Still enjoy playing Age of Mythology, Stronghold Crusade and Dawn of War. Its comfy

Starcraft 2 has the best designed campaign missions. Starcraft 1 and Warcraft 3 have good stories. Dawn of War Dark Crusade has fun progression between missions with the overworld and every single faction has unique cutscenes and lore for beating every single other faction.

Does Blizzard even sell the classic Starcraft and Warcraft 3 anymore? Anyways, I think I’ll buy a pack with all Dawn of Wars for a few bucks and play through them – I’ll probably start with the first one, so it doesn’t feel janky after the (from what I’ve just now read) superior Dark Crusade.

Pirate WC3 so you don't have to play the shitty remaster

Honestly it's not a big deal, just turn the shitty reforged graphics off and you won't notice the difference. It's on sale till the 17th so get it for sure

It seems I own the original WC3 (they’ve accepted the keys from physical at some point). For SC I’m fricked though.

The remaster is only shitty if you liked WCIII for the multiplayer and custom games. If you just want to play the campaign then it's a passable remake.

they rerendered the cutscenes and made them hella jank

completely untrue and moronic post. It's a straight downgrade that graphically looks a lot worse, visually is less clear, and the cutscenes and music are all out of sync. The WoW content inclusions are also all trash.

Starcraft is free, you have to pay $15 for the remastered visuals, but all the playerbase is the both of you.

Warcraft 3 is only the reforged thing which isn't worth $30 so here you go, latest version DRM free, use Gameranger or something to play online with other people:

Holy shit I just might, just because they’ve done a remaster right.

Also if you're up for a grand strategy game you can't go wrong with Rome:Total war.
Also Battle Realms is a game that surprised me at how polished it was for an older title, def give it a try if you can.

Starcraft 2 WoL is actually really good for single player.

Ordered from highest quality to lowest, these are the ones worth playing that I have tried:
Warcraft 3 and its expansion (NOT REFORGED)
    Age of Mythology
Dawn of War 1 (the original game)
    Dawn of War: Dark Crusade
Starcraft 2, unironically. a lot of effort went into the campaign. (pirate it don't pay full price)
Age of Empires 2 Definitive Edition. If you have to play only one of them, play the Historical Battles scenarios.
Company of Heroes 1 complete pack
    Starcraft 1

Some people will disagree with me, but honestly c&c is not good. Supreme Commander is fun but the campaign isn't what makes it good. Also, Northgard sucks.

It seems like I own most of these games for whatever reason. Only had to re-buy Dawn of War games because my PC doesn’t have a disc drive. I may even own SC2, but I don’t think I have the expansions.
Anyways, Ganker has been helpful for once, so thanks everyone! (except this homosexual

Age of Empires III (base game, not the expansions) has a cool alt-history campaign in colonial America fighting a not-Illuminati secret society over multiple generations.

Didn't that game have shitty cards you apply to the mission

It had card abilities you can pick from before the match, sort of like picking your own AoM god powers. I didn't find it getting in my way though.

I should give it a try. I never really got into AoE3 but that was for irrational reasons.

Company of Heroes 1 base campaign is pretty good. Also Homeworld 1, its expansion (not available in the remastered version) and 2 are excellent.
