Videogames will always struggle with this because implementing the cool shit of trpgs is really difficult. Mounts, ships and other options of travel that act as a gold sink in early adventuring days are trivialised because the worlds just aren't big enough, player domains are near useless because they are often poorly fleshed out. Hirelings are also always poorly implemented, because computer games always seem to want to give the option to travel alone no matter how dangerous enemies are.
The issue stems from single currencies that lead to a division of labor that just isn't fun. Survival crafting games get around this because you have to actually get the base resources of something you want to craft, which you can think of as different currencies and therefore different gameplay.
The way you fix this is making gold essentially a way to patch up what you don't have, but everything is so expensive you rarely have any gold at all, so you have to actually engage with other aspects of the game.
