I recently played my first DQ game for the first time (DQ 1+2). While both games suffer from some serious flaws (e.g. stupid disposable keys in 1, enemies that can wipe your party in 1 turn if the RNG screws you over), the gameplay is still very solid, and their highly appealing creature designs and scripts quickly make you realize the series was destined to be a runaway success.
The Pokémon cycle is very real. There are people feeling nostalgic about Sword and Shield already.
Honestly it's probably because every subsequent game is shittier than the one before so the ones from the past look better by comparison.

Those are brought up less because they're hard to defend even for the people who think Gen 1 is some sacred cow. The most I've seen people shield designs like Poliwrath and Muk is essentially "frick you I like them".

The recent Pawmi line is probably one of the most egregious examples of it in the series but the first and third stages are among the most popular mons of the Gen.

I have no idea how, it's easily one of the worst Pokemon of the gen and unequivocally the most disappointing evolutionary line I've ever seen. You think something might happen when it evolves and nothing does, and then in order to get the final evo you need to run around for like 2000 steps in a single run without it going into the ball before leveling it and you get what is basically just it stood up.

sonic's fundamental gameplay can be made fun in a dozen different ways. any pokemon clone is likely going to play exactly like pokemon but with different monsters, and all the same types but renamed. fire becomes flame, ice becomes frost, ground becomes earth, grass becomes plant. plus a lot of pokemon's initial success came from the fact that it started essentially alongside the anime as an extended commercial, and the TCG as a supplement to the games. A big part of the draw of pokemon also comes from the fact that a lot of people love it so there's always more people to play it with.
If you release a pokemon clone on steam with a small budget and no marketing, it will fail in a week when everyone all but drops it and there's no one to play it with and nothing to talk about. Also its the largest media franchise in the world. nobody's just going to come along and overthrow it. look at yokai watch. they even had a show, movies and spinoffs, and they're still super niche.

It's not a guaranteed catch and becomes useless after turn 1, Dusk Ball is useful for the entire battle as long as it's night time.
in terms of utility maybe, but its by far one of the ugliest by design. the only pokemon it would match with is manectric. by utility, the beast ball is more effective than anything besides the masterball, except for the caveat that it is only effective on ultra beasts.

I tried that, it didn't. It would just run up to me and stare at me even if I stood out in the open where it had enough space. I had to run around on foot in circles for like five minutes because the Pokecenter rooftop method via the bike didn't work since he would stop running in a circle and come to a halt after a few seconds.
