Yeah, but Reborn takes some liberties to make it more of a tactical game than an RPG compared to the other versions so your preference may vary.

Gameplay has always felt off with FFT; too easy to be overpowered if you know what you are doing or underpowered if you don't. Great story though.

Actually think it matches the writing of FFT with superior gameplay.

I just can't play these games. I want to play them so much. I bought TO for switch and for pc already, but the games are fricking slow. I still didn't get past chapter 1 (but I did beat the necromancer).
FFT I bought for my phone and didn't get to play it yet.

Emulate them and speed toggle. Sadly the music is pretty nice and you'll frick it up but what can you do.

It's fine, you don't have to. This kind of gameplay is hard to crack for a lot of people—Tactical turn-based in general, but especially older stuff that still hadn't ironed-out a lot of antiquated design.

Maybe wait for some good mods with Reborn on the PC? I haven't played it myself so dunno what is already extant, but worth seeing if there's some QoL speed-up shit.

As for FF Tactics: I'm hopeful the eventual remake will have larger changes like a big graphics overhaul as well as a lot of QoL changes to the combat to make it feel less clunky, so maybe just hold out for that.

inb4 (You)'s getting angry at me for implying any changes whatsoever when they have a perfectly fine game to emulate for the OG experience.

          >This kind of gameplay is hard to crack for a lot of people—Tactical turn-based
the thing is anon I don't mind tactical shit. I do like e.g. playing card games having combos, I also liked e.g. bravely default having strats and shit. It's just that there needs to be a better way then
          >menu opens
          >choose action
          >wait animation
          >choose action
          >wait animation
          >walk somewhere
          >say you are done
          >wait for your opponent to do the same
          >same shit again.

Once I also played Fire Emblem Shadow of something on 3ds. I found that faster paced and I just stopped playing because the story didn't catch me that much and I didn't like the dungeon grinding part. (Also characters were boring cookie cutter anime chars. Le cool childhood guy who was the leader, the childhood friend who is in love and then the princess who was just there but the guy fell in love etc. etc.)

            Anonymous

Yeah seems like it's leaning more just archaic design issues for you then. Understandable, as the pacing kind of sucks at times, both in a micro and macro sense. Hell, even for me it was 2.5 pretty deep attempts over two decades and I still only FINALLY finished the game after finding a mod that greatly decreased the grind needed and increased later-game difficulty.

There's a reason I want them to pull huge overhaul remake, as the gameplay definitely needs to be streamlined in a lot of ways. It's actually crazy, when you start to think of it, how far just an updated UX for non-combat systems alone can improve the experience by magnitudes.

              Anonymous

*Gameplay pacing. The narrative pacing is actually really good—if you didn't have the random battles and grinding you'll have to engage with in between story stuff.

              Random tangent What-I-Want time:

Again, Square, please fully remake this game. Give us cel-shaded 3D models with a hatched-shading effect using Akihiko Yoshida's art style, full voice-over like TO: Reborn, QoL overhaul of combat to streamline the experience in multiple possible ways, upgraded menuing UX because of how much time you spend customizing, and make grinding unnecessary and shunt it off to the side. Add additional side content to justify engaging with the optional grinding so that the grinding can exist for both people who're just bad and need it for the MSQ as well as those who need it to attempt challenge content. The grinding content itself can also somewhat fill this side-narrative stuff.

The only thing clunky about fft is the inability to revert to your unit's original position after you move , and I hope you're not talking about the magic charge mechanic when referring to the combat system being clunky

I think there was an xml hack for that feature for the PSX version. Maybe the issues with Move Gain Exp and similar abilities are fixed now.
I should really stop being lazy and start modding my own QoL version of the game.

I think it's this mod and it's pretty good https://ffhacktics.com/smf/index.php?topic=13119.0 , proposition system also got overhauled to not be as clunky as it was before , though I wish these features were in the psp version instead because the ps1 loading times made trying to use the proposition area really annoying at times

                Anonymous

The author updated the old QoL patch that had the "cancel movement" patch included. I read he fixed the issues with movement abilities and some menu and sprite corruption. Only bug that remains is if you heal past the "Critical" crouching animation with Move Gain HP. The animation doesn't update. Anyway it's mostly bug free.
I never had much trouble with loading with the PSX version. If anything it always run smoother than the PSP one for me. The new proposition area might just be doing a bit of heavy lifting it sounds like, i haven't tried the mod myself.

It's great , it's the second best improvement mod of this game i've played , the best one is fft tweaked , it's one of those mods that after playing it you could never return to the og game without feeling like it's incomplete , completely rebalances every single class in the game , has some of the best qol on the psp version and you can even get the multiplayer exclusive items in the story , it also made me and other fft fans realize how fricking superfluous and overbearing the gain extra jp support skill was for the game , having that as a passive thing for all classes is the best change anyone could make

                Anonymous

I always liked the solution of reducing JP costs instead of a passive Gain JP UP ability. That way the game can generate enemies with more skills to use since they can allocate their spawning JP better and there is parity with the player getting the JP advantage

Mostly referring to menuing and scenario navigation, less so any actual combat mechanics—though I wouldn't mind tuning there, either, since shit like Charge can be improved on and has been by many mods. Referring to the former, though, Game Design has changed a lot in the nearly two decades since Tactics debuted. I can think of many ways to speed-up the pace of combat and smooth-out ancillary stuff that indirectly slows it down, like finding a good view-angle of the battlefield.

That's fair , on some stages the camera only moving in fixed corners can be a major detrement , free cam movement would be a really good edition to the game
Also yeah I don't know what the hell they were thinking with all of archer's abilities being some variant of charge that can't lock on , is single target and takes an eternity because archers don't have anything that can compensate for it like mages do with short charge skill , and could miss
Awful class that completely needs a rework if we get a remaster/remake

I meant the spell-charging mechanic, which isn't a huge problem but definitely could be upgraded, and has been changed in many mods like I said.

That said, in the context you're talking about, I legit played a mod that refreshed job design across the board, and one of the changes was swapping Mustadio's Machinist abilities with the Archer's Charge. The guy then gave the new Archer abilities some re-imagining and re-balancing as well as the job itself to make it viable for longer, but I also discovered his Machinist change worked with Ninja's dual-wield. So, Mustadio was running around dual-wielding fricking rifles that both used the Charge shot.

Further kudos to him: entirely organically just out of experimenting with stuff (as he didn't go into the nitty-gritty of all change possibilities. Trade-off is some iffy documentation, but it was fun getting that novel experience again to a degree all these years later.

I gotta jet here but if you were curious it's the Valeria mod. Later!

I also think fft needs a teardown and rebuild mechanically
They really need a better way to do job experimentation than any kind of jp grind. I have done no grind fft with no problems but it's because I'm not like exploring the archer class for a chapter like a new player would and I just specialize in the jp cheapest good stuff

Has anyone ever made a mod or has there ever been an update that removes that fricking ugly upscaling for the sprites? It's not a dealbreaker or anything, but that smoothing looks like complete ass and I would prefer pixels over the shitty adobe photoshop upscale bilinear smoothing

Getting any depth out of the Jobs system requires spending most of the game grinding away in non-story combat encounters at which point any character that's built out the way you want is so over-leveled that the actual battles are steamroll affairs that don't need any tactics at all to win.

Archer's charge while certainly uninteresting is not a bad concept. A delayed action that gets stronger the more charging you can sneak in is cool.
It's horribly balanced that's for sure. I played around with giving each charge level the corresponding clockticks till resolution number (so that charge+1 has a CRT of just 1 for example) and it felt pretty nifty. Charges more than 7 felt really useless still i'll admit.

      Anonymous

It would be cool if the archer's next turn came faster after a charge proportionally to the charge time so you can get free damage for smart delaying without impacting overall number of actions

        Anonymous

*Same logic would also make magic charges feel better in the late game when people get enough speed that magic charge starts wasting a large number of your actions

          Anonymous

Your speed keeps building while charging. It's why charge +20 is so bad because your next turn comes before you get it off. I see what you're trying to say but im not sure delayed actions are bad action economy unless they reach that dumb +20 case. Them scaling bad with speed sucks i'll admit. They could just have them resolve faster depending on the units speed.
