why does this trigger you autists? it's perfectly valid. take a salisbury steak for instance. it can be amazing, but it'll never be an amazing steak. if you order a steak, you expect a steak, and you'll be disappointed if you get a salisbury steak. same thing with a game series. you'll expect certain things from a game within a series, and if a new game fails to deliver on those expectations, even if the game is well made and fun to play, it would be a disappointing entry in that series
>food analogy
>food analogy's are.... LE BAD!
when's the reddit strike over?
Analogies*** stupid ESL
Everyone eats food, anon. Food analogies are a simple way for people to understand things because everybody eats.
>take an FPS for instance. it can be amazing, but it'll never be an amazing turn-based RPG. if you order a turn-based RPG, you expect a turn-based RPG., and you'll be disappointed if you get an FPS.
if you enjoyed the game then it's a good game, the franchise has nothing to do with it
sequels don't exist in a void, there is an expectation when comes down to a sequel, not a spin off, a sequel, if the sequel guts content and mechanics found in previous games, its basically a reboot.
Talking to you Darksiders 3
you can't talk to video games
>he can't talk to his video games
It matters when making direct comparisons to other games in the series which may play totally different and not appeal to someone who is either new to or already a fan of the series.
>if I like it it's good, otherwise it's bad, please don't elaborate any further
And people wonder why vidya discourse is dead.
That's how you homosexuals judge games
Ganker being full of homosexuals doesn't make your shitty homosexual argument any less shit, homosexual.
>she goes around fishing for arguments but can't find any
Better to be a homosexual than a troony.
>schizo ramblings
The statement doesn't deny that it's a good game. However if you're looking for a particular experience it might not satisfy you. It's an easy way to communicate that if you just finished [game] and want more of the same thing, this might not be what you want to play, but without bringing down the game's quality. For example it could also be used the other way around. Someone wants to get into [game] series but it's hard to get into? This might be a good entry point because it's GOOD but DIFFERENT.
>if you enjoyed the game then it's a good game
just not a good [franchise] game
🙂
It triggers us because you think that people saying that are fricking idiots and that no one should EVER have this stance.
Some people actually do feel like a game can be good on its own merits while letting down as an installment of a series. This is not a black or white issue.
>why does this trigger you autists?
You know why. You wouldn't be posting here if you didn't know why, even if only a little. The urge to be a nitpicking autistic contrarian is inherent in the 4chins experience.
Like what said, there's nothing fricking wrong with this argument. Take Fallout 4 for instance. I can walk around and shoot things and upgrade and for simple enjoyment it's a good game. But in terms of things that define Fallout (story, narrative, choices, dialogue, skill checks, etc.) it falls flat on its face. A game can be good in its own right while failing to deliver on a series' key components.
cringe
>wtf why are people annoyed that we slapped a preexisting name on a random piece of software for no other reason than ease of advertising
It's pretty fun if you like looter shooters and settlement building
It's a horrible game.
Yeah, its gameplay is pretty solid
I came to fallout for fallout. If I want borderlands I'll play borderlands.
>its the same game but with better graphics
>it's not a good game, but it's a good [franchise] game
alright what's a proper example of this, bunny?
any pokemon game
Monster Hunter World
Monster Hunter Rise
>not a good [franchise] game
>like uh.. the one game that came out a couple of decades ago
>the game sucks because [insert generic shitpost with no further explanation]
Oh okay, you have swayed my opinion of this game completely. Thank you!
Truly the early 2010s were a dark time. Throw Thief 4 in with that trash pile.
MGR
>i have no idea what expectations are
> it's not a good franchise game because the franchise is shit
>BotW/TotK
>DaS2
Valid complain.
Dark Souls 2 is literally the same shit as Dark Souls 1, Monster Hunter games have more differences between one another than Souls Games.
Bullshit. Without Miyazaki to direct it, Dark Souls 2 ended up being easier than Dark Souls 1, and the lore, level design, and boss fights are all fricking lame compared to the first game. The only people who unironically like Dark Souls 2 are secondaries whose first Souls game they ever played was Dark Souls 2. There's a reason why the vast majority of Souls fans view it as the weakest entry in the franchise.
Majority of Souls fans started with 3. And Dark Souls 1 fans only like Dark Souls 1.
I'm a Dark Souls 1 fan and I liked Dark Souls 3. Bloodborne is the best.
Low iq take, the only "hard" soulsgame is the first one you play with all the others being comparatively easier, any discrepancy in difficulty is redundant. They are the same game.
Bullshit. I played Dark Souls 1 first and Demon's Souls is definitely harder. Dark Souls 2 bosses are also babytown frolics level easy with how they all blatantly telegraph their moves. Meanwhile Old King Allant in DeS and Artorias in DS1 will frick your shit up.
Demon’s Souls is a cakewalk after the Souls games.
>demon's souls harder than ds1
>sekiro
SAME GAME. Shit like sekiro, bb and elden ring is merely a diferent flavor and takes some getting use to
>oh now you jump
>oh the game is little bit faster
>oh its a rhythm game
unless you're a complete shitter, your acquired skill from one translates to the next
>Shit like sekiro, bb and elden ring is merely a diferent flavor and takes some getting use to
Then how come Elden shitters keep getting filtered when they try previous Souls games?
they can't summon to every fight
id say trying to play sekiro like darksouls is a hinderance
Demon's Souls is just harder at first if you come from Dark Souls 1, mainly due to inexistant poise; iirc you only get hyperarmor in specific moves and only late during the animation.
All of DeS is balanced around having a lower Soul Level and weapon upgrades in average, and specific grind becomes tiresome quickly. Some 'caps' are just supposed to be gotten in NG+ (which has a huge and weird damage raising imho).
Other than that, it's a very easy game compared to the successors. Most bosses are just a gimmick or a puzzle and if you REALLY have to grind for something, it's 20k for buying the Evacuate spells. It just makes exploring way more comfy and low stakes, since shards of archstone are rare, expensive and returning to the Nexus is impossible in some maps after you get ahead. Unless you kill the area boss and that's a risk.
Of course, perceived difficulty is completely subjective and it's perfectly possible to keep dying to that bullshit Flamelurker AoE with bad hitbox which for some reason they thought nice to reuse for two variations of the Asylum Demon in DS1.
Lemme guess... Sekiro doesn't count according to you?
Except all you gays complained DS2 is too hard because of tight dodge timings and group battles so they neutered it.
DS2 is by far the best Souls game, especially mechanically. DS3 and onwards just keep making things easier.
>Except all you gays complained DS2 is too hard because of tight dodge timings and group battles
No we didn't. DS2 is fricking lame, has the most forgettable lore and levels, has the lamest boss fights, and is too easy. There's a reason why majority of Souls fans immediately forgot about it when Bloodborne came out a year after DS2.
Your criticisms are all subjective nonsense. Nothing has any actual merit. DS3 is the worst Dark Souls because it's a horrid mishmash of two gameplay styles where the enemies are Bloodborne speed and you're stuck at Dark Souls. It relies far too heavily on fanservice to obtain its own identity and essentially finally falls into a straight up Berserk ripoff in the last DLC.
>DS3 is the worst Dark Souls because it's a horrid mishmash of two gameplay styles where the enemies are Bloodborne speed and you're stuck at Dark Souls.
So you hate it because it's actually challenging and you prefer DS2 because it's easier. Got it.
>It relies far too heavily on fanservice to obtain its own identity
Bullshit. Fighting Aldrich Gwyndolin in Anor Londo and Gwyn mode Soul of Cinder in Kiln of the First Flame are the only real bits of fanservice. Darkeater Midir, Pontiff Sulyvahn, Dancer Of The Boreal Valley, and The Nameless King are all some of the best bosses in Souls history and each have their own uniquely crafter levels where you fight them.
>essentially finally falls into a straight up Berserk ripoff in the last DLC
Paying homage to Berserk is a good thing. Slave Knight Gael is the best boss fight in the game with only The Nameless King giving him a run for his money. You're a homosexual.
AC4
>It's a good [franchise] game, but it's not a good game
Are there any cases of this?
Strand Type games
>It's a good [franchise] game, but it's not a good game
I would say it's something like Guilty Gear 2: Overture.
It's a very valuable and important game that progresses the story of the Guilty Gear franchise in a major fashion and expands its universe dramatically but the game itself is ultimately dogshit.
Any long standing series with a steadfast fanbase but low quality and little mainstream appeal.
Think Dynasty Warriors/Musou games. Or sports games, I guess.
Jojo All Star Battle
Yakuza 0 is always the answer
Uh yes? OP are you moronic? This is a perfectly valid thing. If you enjoy Halo after Bungie then you need you be flayed alive and rolled in salt like a baby bottle pop you subhuman degenerate.
This applies to Monster Hunter Rise though.
They deviated from "big slow weapons that has you commit your swings", to "fast swings you can animation cancel or reposition via wirebugs and silkbind moves" and the result is the game us not challenging for most fights.
Hunts also last about 10 mins now.
The game is still fun and it's not literally a bad MH game but it's a little disappointing that the monsters can't balance-wise keep up with the player's power even before heavy consumable (ie traps and bombs) use.
Tales of Arise
Better than Tales of -ia
The correct saying is "it's not a bad game, it's just not a good [franchise] game."
This means that the game is functionally playable, but mediocre and underwhelming compared to other games in the franchise. This is due to the writing being not as well written, the gameplay being way too casualized and/or drastically changed from previous games thus alienating its original audience, the level design being dull, the soundtrack being forgettable, etc. Examples include...
Resident Evil 5 and 6
DmC: Devil May Cry
Dino Crisis 3
Dead Space 3
Dark Souls 2
Halo 5 and Infinite
Every Star Fox game after Star Fox 64
Gears of War 4 and 5
Fallout 3 and 4
Final Fantasy XIII and XV
Street Fighter V
Skyrim
Diablo 4
Breath of the Wild
Tears of the Kingdom
skyrim, botw, and totk do not apply.
Yes they do. Skyrim is casualized normie shit compared to Morrowind and Oblivion, and it ruined modern games since it made every dev of action-adventure and RPG games fall for the open world meme, including Zelda for BotW. BotW and TotK are bland and soulless trash compared to Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time.
You think normalgays can't play Morrowind and Oblivion? You're deluded
You think they can? You're deluded.
If they actually tried Morrowind they'd either be put off by the graphics because it's over 20 years old, or they'd complain about the combat.
it makes prefect sense
>game is good, but doesn't meet expectations set by the previous entries in the series
The “expectations from previous entries” are usually poorly defined and it is just an excuse to complain about an otherwise good game because it was slightly different from what you wanted.
Mario Odyssey, great for when I'm in the mood for some Banjo or DK64, but it doesn't fundamentally understand the Mario formula.
Deus Ex is a good game, it's just a bad erotic JRPG
>it's a good game and it will be appreciated for years to come
elden ring
Metroid Dread is a bad game no cap
Samus is hot in this.
The baby
Megaman Legends 1 and 2
Super Paper Mario is a fine game. It's just a dogshit followup to Thousand Year Door.
>Super Paper Mario is a fine game.
eehhhhhhhhhhhhh not really. The gameplay is braindead platforming and even more braindead "combat" and the game trivializes itself halfway through by giving you access to Bowser and invalidating the "multiple characters" gimmick for anything but explicit areas where you're forced to swap to progress.
Dawn of War 2 all the way from Chaos Rising to Retribution.
"Xcom the Bureau"
Resident Evil "Chronicles" and Resident Evil "Umbrella Corps" also the wierd "S.U.R.VIVE. multiplayer they tacked onto the REmake.
does anyone remember "Castlevania: Judgment"? and Castlevania: "Lord of Shadows"?
Final Fantasy Dirge of Cerberus was just frickign awful. I remember gameinformer made fun of it also it cemented one of the coolest FF characters as a unironic cuck in the literal term for the villain of a past game. eugh.
I could go on but I'd prefer not to
>want to play a game of a certain genre
>there's a certain IP that always has been that genre
>they come out with a game in a different genre
>"why don't you like the game, anon, I thought you loved <IP>?"
If I want to play Mario it's because I want to jump on goombas, not play a sports game.
max payne 3
It's such a brain dead stupid thing to say. Resident Evil 4 and Symphony of the Night are fan favorites of their series, despite being wildly different and not meeting the expectations set by previous entries. In fact, they CHANGED what the expectations of those series were.
It shows that "the expectations set by the series" and all that bogus crap has nothing to do with it. It's all about quality. If you nail the new thing hard enough, it just doesn't matter.
>the cuckie can't see how a product is made by different people in a compeltely "new direction" to attract "new customers" but using the name of the product for brand recognition
corp-cucks... always corp-cucks...
Literally Final Fantasy XVI. So we've had 4 shit final fantasies in a row that produced 1 and a half good games, one half decent mmo and one decent acshun game.
What's not to understand?
Imagine if Capcom made DMC VI into a competent first person shooter.
It would be a decent game but not a worthy sequel to the gameplay conventions set out in the previous entries.
>its a solid [user score]
Black person, there's no such thing as a solid number or a weak number. Decimals exist for a reason
>game changes in a way that's not bad, and which somehow retains the soul of the series in a way that you can intellectually appreciate
>but the change makes the game no longer appealing to you
BoTW and ToTK
If a thing is categorically an X, and it is also good, then it's definitionally "a good X"
>B=BUT IT'S NOT GOOD IN THE WAY I ENJOY OTHER X GAMES
Then fricking say that instead
Thing is, how do you define the "category?"
Using Zelda as an example, BotW and TotK have so little to do with the rest of the series that all it would take to make it a new IP would be different names and tweaks to the character designs. But what characters look like and what they're named isn't what defines a series.
It's a valid criticism. Some games are good games in a vacuum, but not by the standards of their series.
stupid Black person
you will never be og
you will always be a zoomer who’s firdt game in the series was the 4th game where every in depth mechanic or writing or art style destroyed the game but you eat it up anyway solely because it’s popular and you don’t know any better
the type of person who would prefer ‘owning’ all his movies on netflix than mint condition comic books or vhs tapes
OP being a homosexual Black person wienersucker turd eater and thinking people will still agree with him on such a stupid implication just because it's become cliche in actual reviews. At least it isn't a pointless copy-paste checklist steam review. I hope pubic hairs wire your teeth shut the next time you chomp down on a fat dick, moron.
