I don't get why some people prefer the Babys First Controller-style buttons
Unless you're actually a pre-schooler you should be able to remember which button is X and which is Y and where they're located on a normal SNES or Xbox controller without even giving it a single thought
I just wish it had a left shoulder button, a select button, stick buttons, and a dpad that didn't inject pure aids into your thumb every time you try to use it
This controller is unusable for 2D games and modern 3D games, since it simply doesn't have enough buttons.
So in other words; worthless for anything but Gamecube games and smash.
I'm pretty sure Nintendo titles were built with this limitation in mind.
Not that this limitation should exist in the first place of course. I wonder what moron thought it was a good idea to give it only ONE shoulder button.
It makes sense if you assume Nintendo hardware devs live beneath a rock and are entirely unaware that competing hardware even exists
Compare the GameCube controller to an N64 controller: >C-buttons replaced by the C-stick >L and R are now analogue >Can access the main analogue stick, dpad and z-button at all times >two additional buttons: X and Y
For most games that's two buttons plus the entirety of dpad and the analogue trigger functions as brand new additions compared to the N64! Surely so many new ways to interact will be enough...
The good thing about it is that it enables bottom button+top button as a viable button combo, A+Y is a reasonable command to see from a cube game. I wanna say Soul Calibur 2 was the one taking advantage of that? But because the design they settled on failed to shape the B like its neighbors, it makes B+Y harder, which SC2 also fricking needed. The only other downside is how it makes B+X even harder but nobody makes games where you actually have to press the horizontally-across buttons together so you're not losing anything there.
I recall adoring the triggers in this, but hating the right analog stick and d-pad so much, still a good controller, close to striking gold, and for specific games built with it in mind it can be a joy, but otherwise it can be quite flawed.
Not when a lot of games are designed around the layout being a diamond. The only GameCube games that truly felt right with that controller are games made specifically for it, whose designers knew the control layout and designed around that
I wrote a long analysis of this but it didn't go through, so tl;dr version: >it's genius to surround the button your thumb naturally rests on with the other face buttons
You no longer have to cross over "square" and "circle' to get to "triangle" -- it's just right there. >it's also genius to have them differently-shaped, so you don't get "lost" on the buttons; similar to how you might on a keyboard when you start typing some nonsense because your fingers aren't on the home row
yeah yeah, I know, anon: only morons have this problem. You're so intelligent and capable and you never ever make mistakes.
In retro games, you rarely have to press two face buttons simultaneously, so that's not really an issue for me.
The controller looks silly, and I wish it had a better right-stick, proper L1/R1, and I think they could have squeezed another face button in there. I don't like complaining about Dpads because every Dpad on every controller ever is dogshit except the one on the original DS. The gamecube pad is also very, very comfy for my manlet hands.
All in all, it's my favorite controller. Metroid Prime is my most favoritest game ever and I like it better on the gamecube than on the wii. Retro did a brilliant job on the controls -- what a gem.

OP says specifically about ABXY layout, what shitty d-pad and lack of other buttons have to do with this?
gamcube controller feels comfy but its one of the worst controllers for a system
-c-stick means fps games/ports suffered
-button layout is a nightmare for traditional fighting games
-2 less buttons than ps2/xbox
-dpad basically unusable
>2 less buttons than ps2/xbox
it's actually 4 less if you take into consideration that the gamecube lacks control stick click buttons (L3 and R3)
and since the dpad is practically unusable you MIGHT as well say that it doesn't count so that would be 8 in total. fricking 8.
its better than the nintendo controller just before it
its better than the nintnedo controller just after it
not as good as PS2, on par with original XB

The gamecube layout is alright

It is not

It's worthless even for gamecube games as it lacked buttons even in gc exclusive titles - see MGS-TT and it's bizzaro Codec screen combination.

you do these button combo using a single shoulder button in soul calibur, works better.

Good Morning Sirs.

>thumb rests on giant a button
>press b, no way to press x
>press y, have to stretch thumb for b
This is one of the worst (oem) controllers ever made and I'm tired of meleegays pretending its the best thing ever
If the only game you play is Smash, sure.
Otherwise you're a contrarian moron.

I do not like smash bros melee very much.

Kek i didn't even know that, imagine defending this piece of shit
who uses those anyway

It was fine for games like Tales of Symphonia, F-Zero GX, and REmake.
To be honest though, when the Wii came out, I thought the Classic Controller was better in every way.
It's shit and I have no idea why anyone would like this.
True. IMO they should've kept it in the next generations - it's ergonomic and would make Nintendo controllers stand out like they always want.
