Well the entire term is misused metroidvania used to very specifically refer to the castlevania games styled after metroid exploration.
It has since become the name for an entire genre.

My impression is that people starting using the term to refer to all the Castlevanias after SOTN that had heavy influence from Metroid and were popular in the early 2000s. Eventually people started also using the term for indie Metroidvanias that started popping out with the rise of XBLA and Steam.
