To me “soul” is not just the presentation of a video game, it is when every nook and cranny feels intentional, especially from a game mechanic perspective. I love smaller games because of this, as the amount of unnecessary and honestly boring components are cut off from the finished product. The presentation is obviously extremely important, especially for a trailer, but I am skeptical of it actually following through being actually fully realized product with a vision. It probably just looks good for a quick glance, but looking a little closer and it’s probably boring or barren, basically the video game equivalent of a catfish. It’s kinda like movies, any marvel movie can be seeing as “beautiful” or “spectacular” from a certain lense, like watching fireworks. However to say that they doesn’t feel artificial, with no real “point” in them or “heart” or “soul”, should be pretty obvious for any viewer whom have watched more than two of the same cookie cutter movies. I hope it helps.

Soul: when an artist is passionate about their work and were granted the creative liberties to make something truly their own
People can recognize soul where it exists: something can be particularly autistic, something could have had way more effort put into it than necessary, something can be hapazardly put together despite limitation but its awkward execution gives it a bit of a charm because you can tell the developers TRIED to overcome the limitation.
Soul can also mean you feel that presence of the artist reaching out to you and you reach back. Sometimes you just like something enough that you find your own "artist's intrepretation" in there and see soul where there isn't really any.
FORCED SOUL is when an artist recognizes that soul exists and sets out to capture that feeling through mimicry or copying tricks. Oh, people think it's soulful when this little aspect is super animated? Do that. Oh people find it soulful when we subvert the expectation right here? Do that.
It is the same as someone trying to be really funny when they've already established themselves as a bit unrelatable and above you. It comes off as disingenous and undermines the effort put in- and more effort put in seems to make it worse.
This is also down to intrepretation as well. Some people see Nintendo as disingenuously trying to win back the people complaining about how sterile the series has become, other people are seeing it as the complete opposite; a love letter to the people who had to put up with an era of soulless slop and promising a change of heart.
IN REALITY, "forced soul" can just be shorthand for this idea in the presence of animation/ art that goes over the top to be quirky. Real soul subdues itself a bit and sometimes waits for you to reach out, while this "forced soul" breaks through the screen to try to reach to you before you even had the opportunity to give it a shot.
