All names are taken. That's how names work. Coming up with a random string of sounds isn't how normal parents name their children so why would you name your characters like that?

Just make a name one syllable at a time from scratch, if it sounds vaguely like a real name, type it in. If you don't like how it sounds change up the syllables. It works for me in every game, occasionally a name is taken so I just pick another. I love all the characters I make and it's genuinely not hard unless you are a completely imagination lacking frick.

I wish games/services/etc. recycled old names. Like, if someone created their account 10 years ago, but never played anything, someone else should be allowed to claim it for themselves. Or, let us use more letters, or something. The character limit for Xbox names is 12 letters (used to be 15) and it's hard as frick to come up with anything there.

I came up with like 3 different ones (granted I only remember the last 2, which were both compound 2-word names) because I kept being banned due to not wanting to give them a cellphone number.
Also you're posting Final Fantasy 14 and that one is insanely easy to make a unique name in, I had like 8+ different characters all with unique names, because of their First Name/Last Name scheme.

True, but I'm (still) talking about usernames. For character names, being unique isn't so important, because "real names" aren't unique either. You can also easily have duplicate character names, because all of them are identified with your (unique) username anyway.
Personally, I fricking hate the bullshit "username#1234 scheme" that many services use, and am glad that Discord moved away from it. But a lot of services still use that, especially if they have strict limits to username lengths. And I want a unique username for myself.

The Neverwinter MMO has this thing where multiple people can use the same name. I don't know why other MMOs don't do that.

pick two random objects, and use that as a name, it works everytime.
this. title + obscenity always works and alliteration is ez. SER SMEGMA, BONER KING, ERECT ESQUIRE, etc etc. This isn't even going by my standard which is just onomatopoeia of music sections or mishearings of lyrics.
Worked for me in 1993 and in all these years I've never seen it anywhere else.

Reminder that Blizzard used to free up names in WoW from inactive accounts if you made a ticket asking them about it, but now they have a moronic automated system that doesn't work so inactive names are basically never freed up for use anymore.
that shit is exactly what's happening with internet domains. nearly every single passable name is already registered by a ~~*domainer*~~, and if you want it, you have to fork out a small fortune. it's disgusting.
