Then we get to SV, which did the smartest way to get a player to care about the characters. You introduce each one separately, and eventually they meet and interact. Even if you hate them or whatever these guys are at least way more memorable than most rival groups, and it's because of the way the story introduces you to them, and then wraps it up in Area Zero. It's satisfying having your friends getting to know each other, bicker, learn about each other's lives, and grow while you descend into the crater.

How do npc friend groups help me Catch 'Em All? I don't remember my ingame friend group offering me trades for version exclusive Pokemon or offering a back-and-forth trade so I can get those pesky trade evolutions.

SV was probably the most successful game at focusing on the human characters, which seems to be Pokemon's primary focus nowadays.

Hop, Bede and Marnie could have been a friend group, but they weren't given enough screen time
Dunno if more screentime would've done anything there. Marnie didn't have a personality to begin with, and it wouldn't have made sense in the story for the three to come together.
Man, SwSh really dropped the ball when it comes to story. It was definitely extremely unfinished, it didn't even make any sense. I feel like in SV they did the ending pretty early on in development to make sure it was a proper climax and not a wet fart like SwSh cause they had to rush some shit out.
