Golden Eye, Doom 64, Turok, Jedi Knight, Chex Quest 2, Chasm
It was better though than garbage like Blood, Hexen 2, and Redneck Rampage

      Nah, frick you.

It's Redneck Rampage tier but with slightly more polish. Shadow Warrior and Duke are x10 better but don't have as memorable of a main character. They also don't have cultists which are bullshit, levels which are key mazes, and difficulty that is fricked

Blood has some truly excellent maps and music. Even the addons were good. The gameplay is fun too while not as solid as Doom's.

Shadow Warrior and Redneck Rampage feel a bit forced in the humor and level design department.

Duke is a great game, with some stellar maps, but the monster artwork is, with some exceptions, very weak and the weapons and & movement feel a bit flimsy.

I played each of those a lot more than quake 2

      Turok was hot garbage.

Shadow Warrior had more enjoyable weapons than Quake II. Blood also had very satisfying weapons and tons of gore. Both titles were solid alternatives to Duke3D for those who preferred Duke over Quake.
Outlaws stood out because there weren't that many western games back then, even more so fps... so despite its outdated engine, it still managed to do something else than the "generic sci-fi shooter".
While it used the Quake engine, Hexen II made better use of hubs and was visually more interesting thanks to the art direction, even without the colored lighting. There were also three classes of characters and more gameplay variety.
Shadow Warrior, Blood, Outlaws, Hexen II... that's four FPS from 1997, all on PC. Now, we could go back and start listing games that were released BEFORE 1997, but you probably wouldn't accept that, because you know that the main appeal of Quake II resided in its hardware acceleration, colored lighting and transparency effects.

I don't hate Quake II but it can get pretty dull.

Outlaws had the best gunplay among all of them.

In my subjective opinion, Blood, though I'm also of the opinion that Quake 2 is a good game in its own right. The first hour is kinda slow, there's no muzzleflashes, and the AI could have been a lot more if not for Tim Wallets, but hey, Quake 1 was pretty flawed as well and it was still excellent.
Quake 2 is a fun game that I enjoy, and the multiplayer is amazing.

1997 was a good year for shooters.

      Here's the better Q2 game.

      >replacing the Sonic Mayhem rock track with Aubrey Hodge's random noise.
Bleh, not for me. His shtick kind of works for Doom 64, but I don't think Quake 2 works as dark horror.

never understood why the other versions lack this, such an obvious thing to lack especially when every game from DOOM to Quake 1 had it.

I got this on real cartridge:
instadeath sections without quicksave (or savestates) is not that fun
on the other hand the levels are certainly more imaginative than in the original

Only people who can get mega on the edge without rocket jumping are qualified to post itt. (super low bar)
That said, Dark Forces 2 is pretty damn good contender, so fp turned out to be the bp.
Malice for Quake too, even though it's a TC.
Other than that it's pretty much just the Build games which are a pile of highly enjoyable jank that had one thing or the other pulling them down.
N64 homosexualry including Turok need not apply.

This was pretty top of the line in 1996, zoomer, mind the fully 3D environment and most people's resolutions at first.
What you're looking at is a roided out take on the Dimensional Shambler from the Call Of Chthulu RPG. Ergo a large brute monster that hops dimensions, and smashes with its claws or zaps you with lightning. It has a funny gait while running, but I find it charming. I think the texturing and sound design is good.

I never said that. But when your trump card is namedropping an E-celeb, you're not bringing much of anything of value to the table.
Because I'll say this: I like Blood a lot, but it's solely reliant on the Cultists. The rest of the game's roster of monsters fricking sucks. Without the Cultists, Blood WOULD be extremely low tier. Though even with the Cultists, I still like Shadow Warrior the best.

Now are you gonna drop the memes and articulate your grievances with Blood, or are you gonna keep acting like a donut?

Quake II's golden moments are in multiplayer games when playing "The Edge". Otherwise it was cool and also fascinating but id lost their way and started making standard fare games. The story of Q2 sucked and the ending too. id's forte once was making an excellent game with some stupid story stuck on that one would skip. At least they brightly shone from 93 to 96.
