It's not nearly the disaster that everyone makes it out to be. If you can get beyond the ugly graphics, recycled roster, and the 2v2 (as opposed to 3v3) battles, it's actually interesting what they tried to do here. The gem system works well, and it's far more "tag" focused than previous titles.

The use of Shuma got into a legal mess around that time due to him being a Conan character and the owners of the IP started getting b***hy about Marvel using Conan characters without compensation. It's why they had to use a bootleg version of him in the second Doctor Strange movie.

Disney didn't care about the Versus series legacy and wanted it to just be a marketing tool for the MCU. It's why almost all the Marvel characters were from MCU movies instead of having the odd obscure choice like past games did.

Combofiend was 100% right about functions and and players gravitating towards the meta. He just worded it like shit. Any of you saying "I like playing character that looks cool but is garbage" is full of shit when a fighting game is 99% fast paced action without even caring about what your character looks like. I hope the next game has Rocket Racoon playing exactly like Doctor Doom to prove how right he was.

He's not "100%" right because characters are not "100%" their functions. It's nothing against Combofiend - he did the best spin he possibly could- and while he's correct on some level that largely fighting game characters serve certain functions, you can't "100%" remove the "character" aspect from the characters. There are some people who play Magneto because they genuinely like Magneto. Especially when you're talking about a game with a roster like MvC, you're going to have plenty of casual players who don't know or give a frick about a character's "function" who are just going to pick the characters that they like. They're going to pick Wolverine, Iron Man, Spidey, etc. simply because they LIKE those characters - even if they have no idea how to "properly" play them

Factually untrue. People loved the personalities the characters bring to the table with iconic voice lines and animations. Most people aren't in it for "I want to play le shoto, le rushdown, le grappulah, le zonah, etc"
Also, I'd like to sight SF3 as an example of a failure to maintain the branding by attempting to replace old characters with new ones. A large majority of people who played Guile in previous SFs did not jump at the chance to play Remy.

You can add "Winter Soldier" to that list too. Marvel went full israelite in trying to use this game exclusively to promote the MCU. You could argue that they did the same thing with MvC3 (and all of the other crossover games as well, to some extent), but at least when they did it with MvC3 we still got cool characters that people liked and wanted to play

The gameplay feels like a step back compared to UMVC3.
The art style is considerably worse then previous entries.
Story mode was cool.

It’s more fun to rep multiple Mega Man series at once (I think Tatsunoko vs did it the best) but just focusing on X isn’t really a bad thing, PxZ2 did it as well and it was done decently, Infinite just messed up the execution.
They were never going to remake a new model for Zero when they already had one from MvC3. The game was made on a shoestring budget which is why most of the Marvel3 cast got ported over in the first place. Also, infamous as he was, a lot of people played Zero in Marvel3 and liked him - it really wouldn't make a lot of sense to just change him

People have been wanting X for years - at least dating back to Zero being in MvC3. They already had classic Mega Man in MvC1 and 2, so it wouldn't make sense to reuse him. Aside from classic, X would probably be the most popular version of Mega Man. It makes sense to use him over someone like EXE or Volnutt
