It also makes me wish that New Vegas was post Skyrim instead of post Oblivion/Fallout 3, 7th gen.
It's pretty fricking shitty. It completely ditches being an RPG for an open world shooter.. but it's not even a good shooter or an open world game. The story and writing are bad, the gunplay is bad, combat all around is mediocre. I don't mind the artstyle or music, but those are not valid enough aspects to play a game on alone.

I've been playing StoryWealth, since it's the biggest and most stable and I guess well-supported modpack with extra content and stuff. And even with all of that, I think Fallout 4 is much more of a "frick around and do random stuff" experience rather than a cohesive game where you engage with and partake in a directed storyline with clear boundaries and goals. If you don't already know the game inside and out (which I don't), then there's a little bit of enjoyment in booting it up and discovering a new place and saying "Hey this is a neat little doo-dad" or maybe finding a cool gun specifically placed there for you to discover.
It's not a good game, by any stretch. But I think it's just slightly more of a sandbox to frick around in than Skyrim, which I guess is the same but just way worse. And unfortunately the game is Bethesda coding and engine which means even if you really want to like, engage with it in a way that really dives deep into expanding and playing with the settlement or building mechanics or whatever, the game just can't support that at all.

I think 4 is, on a pure gameplay level, and I mean just the barebones combat and movement systems, the best game in the series. the issue is thats not a high bar. like the isometric ones just feel like shit to play and 3/4 are more palatable but they're still insanely janky and have a lot of just bizarre design choices but 4 is like a passable lootershooter that I could mindlessly sink into for a couple dozen hours
4's biggest problem is once you're past that it just has fricking nothing in it. the RPG trappings don't really add much depth, the main story sucks, the characters aren't interesting, the world is boring, the art style is bland. I hate the way the weapons look, I hate most of the factions, I hate just about every character and companion outside of a very slim few, it feels like theres nothing to really do other than blast through hallways of enemies and build some bases that despite the sixteen rocket launchers on every corner can't defend themselves in any way.

F4SE finally got updated, the only mod that wasn't working for me when I tried it out today was Expanded Dialogue because it needs to be updated.

I think 4 is, on a pure gameplay level, and I mean just the barebones combat and movement systems, the best game in the series. the issue is thats not a high bar. like the isometric ones just feel like shit to play and 3/4 are more palatable but they're still insanely janky and have a lot of just bizarre design choices but 4 is like a passable lootershooter that I could mindlessly sink into for a couple dozen hours
4's biggest problem is once you're past that it just has fricking nothing in it. the RPG trappings don't really add much depth, the main story sucks, the characters aren't interesting, the world is boring, the art style is bland. I hate the way the weapons look, I hate most of the factions, I hate just about every character and companion outside of a very slim few, it feels like theres nothing to really do other than blast through hallways of enemies and build some bases that despite the sixteen rocket launchers on every corner can't defend themselves in any way.
its like in every other game I'm fighting with the gameplay to enjoy the story and the world but in 4 I'm fighting with my boredom of the story to keep slogging through the mid gameplay and its not as captivating
It's not hard to have fun with mods, and even vanilla 4 is better than Fallout 3 or 76 (or tactics, shelter, BoS). If they hadn't smoked crack and decided to have that moronic dialogue wheel then the writing wouldn't have been so constrained. Glad Bethesda learned from that and took the feedback to heart
