If by exploration you mean wandering without a purpose through an empty looking wasteland that has dumb shit going on that constantly breaks your immersion (examples: Tenpenny tower is a huge pre-war building placed in the middle of nowhere, there are a lot of bridges that make no sense, you have fricking monorail bridges through the middle of forests, you have dumb settlements like Megaton and Little Lamplight that have their main purpose being quirky).
I like to play an open world game by progressing through the main story and when I discover a new location I do every side quest that I can start in that location. If I run out of side quests, then I continue with the main one. Fallout 3 has such a ridiculously low amount of side quests that if you do that and fast travel you'll discover less than half of the locations.
If NV was made by Bethesda you'd only be able to join the NCR and at the end you'll have the possibility to blow up the dam or not to give you the illusion that your choice is a huge part of the game.

No what I meant is not the fact that Tenpenny Tower simply exists. I don't have a problem with that. It's the simple fact that are no buildings around it. It's a huge tower in the middle of nowhere. And it's not explained by the buildings being destroyed, it genuinely looks like there was never something there in the first place. It makes the map unsatisfying to look at and explore.
Its position isn't based upon where something like that would be in reality, nor is the world around it built to justify its position. It's there because of the Megaton nuke quest and nothing else.

F3's content is mainly a trifecta of raiders, ghouls and super mutants, but I figured it might be fun to play the DLCs again and revisit some of the content I'm bound to have forgotten by now, but with more perks, more guns, that sort of stuff. I don't dislike Fallout 3 by itself but next to New Vegas it looks like a lot of wasted potential.

It's new, fresh, fun and silly. That's all the reasons. You beating up aliens, listening to recordings of abductees, freeing and getting help from people from different time periods, I liked it.
I don't mind the completely nonsensical aspects of it, if the game play is fun then it's fun, I'm arguing that (from what my memory) it wasn't that fun because it was very repetitive, endless corridors (not fun areas to shoot in) filled with the same enemies until your inventory clogs up because you get showered in loot with no means of selling it. By comparison OWB is the better DLC if you want something wacky that that prioritizes game play over immersive storytelling, it's way more varied.

I still prefer PL/BS because they feel more like expansion packs (the former adding a whole new island with a main quest and a fair chunk of side content, sort of like Shivering Isles, and the latter spreading out content across the game) as opposed to a quick linear DLC that's over a few hours. Unfortunately all over New Vegas' DLCs (not counting the gun runners) were their own contained stories instead of anything resembling an expansion to the game.

I tried unarmed (admittedly with Sawyer's mod for extra difficulty) and found it pretty bad
Not only is the early game an absolute hell, but you're always frustratingly in the shorter rance against all creatures, so fighting them in the open is super hard
With melee you can get longer weapons to compensate, but with unarmed you're always in the short range

The problem is that while it covers you in fights against one enemy, animals are always in packs and unlike melee, the unarmed are usually single target
VATS is basically a necessity since it nullifies distance and allows you to always attack to first, but constantly using it gets old and I'm not a big fan

You don't have to use VATS, by the time you have the essential perks a good weapon you will absolutely fricking wreck anything, most enemies should die in one hit from a power fist crit.

The flagpole of that Bear and Bull guy is also pretty good if you build for crit.
Blade of the West is fantastic, but reach is irrelevant in mid-to-late game melee. You rush in and obliterate everything in a single crit (0.3-0.5 seconds per target). Pop an Implant GRX on top of that and you can cleave through Deathclaw Promotory like a bloodstained hurricane without so much as a glancing scratch on you.
Blade of the West does have its own niche, however. It knocks down on crit. Real good shit for even more consistent control of tougher enemies or for characters that decided to be too weak for Super Slam (I RPed a melee twink with 4 STR once, the blade was a goliath in his hands).

For all we know, most vaults could have been opened like a couple of decades before FO3.
