There's a lot to like here, but it'll heavily depend upon how hacked together the PC support is. My inclination at this point is to wait until there is an untethered option with similar specs, but we'll see how things are looking when the update happens. Would be nice if the Quest 3 had an oled variant.

He's right, the appeal of a video game is already about being immersed in a digital world; there is nothing about VR gaming that can add to this idea that conventional video games can't. If this wasn't the case, the technology would have caught on the first time that it was introduced in arcades.

      >VR is a meme and will always be a meme.
VR is niche, but it's not a meme.
It's obvious weakness is motion sickness and similar discrepancies in movement. This is why VR is not great for anything that requires interactive walking. But, anything where you're stuck in the drivers seat, a wienerpit, or a stationary location like shooting gallery (superhot)? That's prime. Amazing even if you have a setup with acceleration feedback.

Been trying to warn yall since it was announced. Pc seems to be the last bastion for gaming for the next at least 3 years. You will see zero investment from the console market or mainstream studios. The next 3 - 6 years will be almost all indie, fan an open source projects and mods. None of which current "consoles" can participate in.

      Anonymous

Cause.. indie games don't come out on consoles?

        Anonymous

Ports costs more money. Real Indies don't have the funds to build for every platform. PC is usually the easiest platform to release on first

        Anonymous

because console certification for indie games is literally a "pay X money to sell on consoles".
when debt was easy to acquire devs would just load up a couple of credit cards and pay it off.
        now it's gonna be hellish.

Psvr 2 was nearly an after thought for sony. And it released 2 years to late. It was obsolete on arrival apart from eye tracking but they did jack shit with it but fricking auto aim which is the worst fricking thing you can do for gaming.

      Anonymous

      >obsolete on arrival
it had inside out tracking and eye tracking while not being a thousand dollars. there isn't a single headset for pc with those features. how is that obsolete??????

        Anonymous

Not standalone, not color passthrough, no xr functionality, fresnal lenses (biggest issue). And for them eye tracking was just a gimmick (that probably caused the bulk of price since at the time everyone else dropped it to keep prices lower)

          Anonymous

Standalone is fricking worthless, no amount of hardware will ever come close to providing a decent experience without costing as much as the Vision Pro. Even the latest Valve patents show that they're abandoning standalone for external compute units because cramming all that shit onto the headset provides an objectively worse experience than tethered.

            Anonymous

Nope. Standalone (wireless) tethered to pc is unbeatable by anything flat. Even not just gaming. Already decided to replace my projector with my quest 3. And anyone who uses a projector, it's almost impossible to go back to a physical screen/monitor. And games, I tried going back to flat. Flat was just objectively boring. Flicking a stick and mashing a button was not fun at all anymore. And the screen. Even with a wall sized movie projector just felt so tiny. You couldn't pay me to go play game flat again

No one wants VR. No one asks for it. Yet every few years someone releases a headset that no one buys. The only games you get for it are DLC for other games or indie shit 8 other people bought. The games are all about the gimmick and aren't actually good games on their own. If they were good enough, they'd have released them for a wider audience.

A lot of people who have never tried VR have the braindead take that you could just take out the "gimmick" control scheme and basically have the same game, but look at the utter mess that is the Half Life Alyx flatscreen port to see what it actually looks like to have to manipulate objects in 3D with clunky keyboard mappings and no depth perception.

Its jittery because your hands are jittery and not all games will try to emulate weight to smooth out motion of things you are holding. It there were tracking errors, you would be guaranteed to make yourself sick. Similarly, if a game is clunky, it is also because you are clunky and the game is accurately recreating your clunkiness.

Nice try shill. I read all about it just now and saw how everybody is spending hours setting up their bases just so and they still cant keep the systems from dropping tracking and glitching because your ir sensor system is a glorified wii controller. I also read about how the goggle do have gyros which makes sense sense I dont see the screen mechanism being a jittery mess. Maybe if your precious product manufacturers didnt go balls deep into 3+ bases but instead used more gyros with the infared to generate smooth tracking your shaking skinny wrists wouldnt be twitching the in game objects so much.

PSVR2 has the benefit of better contrast/colors and having eye tracking (idk how that's gonna transfer to PC though since there's a software component to that)
Q3 has the benefit of having near perfect lenses (almost 0 glare and consistently sharp corner to corner) and wireless streaming + you'd have access to the standalone library if you care about that at all.
you'd probably need an aftermarket headstrap though to bring it up to PSVR comfort, but i only got to use the PSVR once meanwhile i own a Q3 so idk how straining the PSVR is long term

It's not about Apple, it's about what they do to the market. Development will happen rapidly now that companies want to compete with Apple. This benefits cost and specs. Buying now would be like buying a Nokia to replace your Blackberry when the iPhone came out. If you already got something it's totally fine to keep using a bit more until the really good stuff comes out.

AVP's impact on the VR market isn't even close to the iPhone's impact on the phone market, and 2020's Apple is a shadow of 2000's Apple.
iPhone was night and day better than all of its competition at the time, AVP arguably isn't much better at all than it's competition for 7x the price

You either did not experience the original iPhone at launch or you're misremembering. It did some important things well but even a lot of people then were saying it was shit, just like people are dunking on the AVP today.
A more valid difference is that Apple launched the pro model before the base and that the iPhone was for a product segment that people needed rather than saw as a potential expensive toy or peripheral.
Still, the effects are happening in a similar way. You think companies like Samsung and BOE would be ramping up production of 4k micro OLED panels if it weren't for Apple? Hell no. It's literally thanks to them and competitors trying to keep up with them that we're getting these types of components finally and pretty cheap (the panels which are the most expensive component in AVP are only $500 for the both of them). So we're going to get cheap headsets with much better specs now. I hate Apple, but you can't deny their power over the market. For a tiny market like VR, they have a huge impact.

                Anonymous

You need to keep in mind that Apple pushed back their planned cheaper Vision model (i.e. $1500-2500) from next year because the manufacturing still cost too much.

                Anonymous

There might be some issues with how they plan to do it with the complexity of their headset design. But in theory a headset that is around $1-2k of the same specs is not out of the realm of possibility now from other companies, now that we know the mass production cost of the panels. Imagine a 4k Beyond. That's what the Apple effect has already enabled, we just need to see those headsets release. We know Samsung already is planning to get one out this or next year.

Comparing VR/AR to smartphones also seems flawed to me because the latter was a highly disruptive innovation that changed more than just the mobile phone market. The way smartphones consolidated many features into a single device made it's popularity inevitable with or without the iPhone.
VR headsets have not proven themselves especially disruptive so far and the AVP seems particularly averse to demonstrate use-cases exclusive to VR.

Does this only happen with airllink? My Q2 has exhibiting awful artifacts in dark, high contrast areas ever since I bought a 4090. Turns out using virtual desktop or a 3rd party program to disable asynchronous spacewarp in airlink fixes it. Hard to tell from the video if it's the same issue.

People really underestimate the feeling of actually holding a gun in VR. I didn't play much but the little I did of Firewall, it was amazing that I could do things like this.
And I was holding a regular PS4 controller lmao.

            Anonymous

Firewall was amazing. Too bad they fricked the netcode and made it unplayable after one of the updates. Also XP gains were way too slow for a VR game that's exhausting to play and has cumbersome peripherals. Really awesome idea but the execution sucked long term. Also not making the gun controller a PC compatible peripheral and licensing it out to more devs was a huge mistake. That gun was one of my fav PSVR experiences. It was good in that other scifi shooter too.

Probably because people are prone to getting nauseated from fast movement in vr, especially if they are new to it. Thankfully I got over that within a couple days, but some people are more susceptible to it, and it's definitely one of the things holding VR back right now.

                Anonymous

Yeah, I hear you. Thing is it's incredibly fun to fly around super fast in VR. Modding blade and sorcery to have super jumping, and quick movement is some of the best fun I've had in ages, but it's something a lot of people aren't even going to try to get used to because it basically necessitates turning your stomach at least a couple times, and I can't really blame someone for not wanting to push through that.

              Anonymous

Most VR FPS games are slow because operating a gun is a lot more involved so the games tend to be a lot more tactical. It doesn't feel that slow in the headset though, you have to remember that recorded footage is effectively a super zoomed-out view which makes things look slower. There's nothing stopping games from being faster. I played Serious Sam in VR for example. But I think for most VR games it feels weird to walk around at 60 mph in environments that are actually to scale.

In a flat game best you can do is hit a cover fore button and either shoot wildly or auto aim or the camera is above so it's moronic no skill bs. I vr you gotta use the spatial audio the guess where the guy is and actually aim blindly (judging the angle) and actually hit your target. Virtual Reality like the NFT and Games as a Service were all pitches to boomers for making investments. The VR being the best scam for boomers. You need a powerful console or PC to do this and let's just say PS5 since Nintendo and Xbox don't care about VR. A $500 console needs a $500 VR headset and a $900 entry PC needs a $300 VR headset, no games so far btw. Now of the games available, how many are worth it in VR? 2? 5? That's a lot of money. VR is just not there for mass consumption and augmented reality mogs the living shit out of VR anyway. No one wants to see spergs play YuGiOh in VR but augmented reality and we're in business for the masses. VR buyer's remorse here, cry Playstation and Valve VR paypigs. VR is having a hell of a time getting off the ground.
Carmack was talking a few years ago that he believes it'll be a niche product until such a time that it is easier to start using than a modern smart phone and just as easy to use. With a smart phone you can unlock the screen on less than a second and begin using it, a VR head set requires you to put it on, adjust it correctly and then power it on, then (for oculus) draw a boundary if it can't recognize where you are which takes almost 30 seconds. In all, to start a VR headset, it can take as long as 5 minutes to get into something, as opposed to a smart phone that takes maybe 3 seconds if you're slow and have a long ass password. On top of that, a smart phone is extremely light and easy to use, while VR is heavy and clunky despite their best efforts and having to use controllers makes the experience subpar compared to a touch screen.
Carmack envisioned some sort of VR headset that was light as normal pair, as easy to put on with hand tracking and said even then it would be a blow out in the smart phone's favor since you do not have to put on a smart phone, the process of grabbing it is all you need, as opposed to the make believe sunglasses VR which has to additional step on placing on the face.
Just a difficult thing to get going, I have no idea how it will ever become mainstream beyond a novelty you use once.

      Anonymous

Clear glass AR is struggling to get a high resolution image without blocking too much light from passing through the glass. If they can solve it then sunglasses are the most realistic option for AR and very light VR uses. Most people already own a pair of sunglasses so it can market itself as a replacement in the same way that smartphones were enhanced mobile phones. The ideal 'smart AR glasses' for normalgays will replace their sunglasses, earpods and sometimes their camera while becoming their virtual smartphone screen, hand tracked controls and AR viewer. It would be complementary to a smartphone.

VR will never achieve that level of mainstream adoption. It's not a particularly disruptive tech, it has the potential to become extremely expensive materially as we chase ever greater immersion and it will never be as light and effortless as science fiction has led people to immaturely expect. Right now you wouldn't even use it to replace your TV unless you just never have guests over.
I like playing VR games but this is a new niche with a unique appeal, not a replacement for existing genres and platforms. Socializing in VR may also one day be more than just a degenerate clubhouse but there are a lot of hardware hurdles that will need to be overcome before casuals and normalgays will find it easy and comfortable enough for them to use regularly.

  37. 3 months ago
    Anonymous

VR is too narrow. It can only be for first person games. Playing other games on it is pointless. It has to be a good enough experience that you would get enough adopters to have people make good enough experiences for it
    > alyx is trash stop coping and trying to convice us granny with a gun is good
It could be nice but anything that doesnt manage to package it as more than just vr is going to be trapped in this conundrum of no games, no adoption, no adoption, no games.

      Anonymous

      > Playing other games on it is pointless
Have you actually tried other games with it? VR is not just about motion controls and games sill have a benefit from the visual aspects.

name one game that isnt first person for vr. Its kind of the whole point. Even the rythm game beat saber is first person.

There are plenty of mods for 3rd person games to show that being able to have the vr view is nice. For one officially supported game, I’ll go with Umihara Kawase. Even in a side scroller, being able to see depth gives a better sense of motion to make the feel of swinging more satisfying.

LMAO I just opened my phone, swiped to "news" and saw this headline, clicked the ellipses, chose "don't show content from IGN" and boom, the article disappeared.
I had not seen a more stupid headline in quite some time. After Sony just spoke of their work in supporting PSVR2 on PC, and the fact that I bought myself one for xmas and use it a lot, drives me to believe this "journalist" didn't even google "psvr2" before writing this article.
I own 25 games for the PSVR2. Most of them I have never heard of on Ganker, because they are original IP's so the threads die immediately. Games like RUNNER and The Last Clockwinder are awesome, but they are never mentioned on Ganker, because VR is such a niche market. I bought a PSVR2, because the price and visual/tracking quality are finally worth dipping in to. I was shocked at how great the software support is. I was taking a risk only owning GT7 and NMS, but I have bought more than 20 games since I got the headset.
VR is not being supported by large coprs, because it is too niche. PSVR2 is the first headset with legitimately good visual quality at a price that isn't $1000+. It sucks it's stuck on PS5, but the announcement from Sony might make modding easier.

My biggest beef with VR is if the game is too short it feels like a tech demo.
But the longer the game goes the less important the controls are, for example this game. At the start you are shielding, parrying and even evading irl, but after 10 hours you are just standing there doing throwing motions to trigger abilities and pointing at objectives.

VR is a complete meme. It's annoying to use and it's not comfortable.

because people expected some kind of Matrix/SAO, not some shitty screen tapped to your eyes, that + a lot of issues people won't buy them, so VR tech is still a meme a decade later, it wil need something really big to happen in tech industry to become good, if not it it will remain a meme even in 2034

VR will be a dead meme when the Half Life Alyx Vance spinoff gets a non gimmick port. Nervous, Valve Index beta testers?
