I dunno. The reason Capcom might have greenling DD2 is probably just in order to convince him to stay for as long as possible. They're bleeding talent and they're just trying desperately to make sure Itsuno doesn't leave.
He basically said DMC5 will be his last, touting direction of the series being more of a young man's job. When he threatened to quit Capcom caved and let him make the games he wanted to make. He first chose DMC5 and now is working on DD2. Its possible he returns to DMC6 but I feel giving the fans a proper DMC title after so long and finalizing his dream game in DD2 will be enough for him to retire on.

It's probably why Capcom hasn't announced DMC6 yet; they're probably afraid to make it. DMC fans know what they want, and it's a very specific set of gameplay mechanics balanced in a certain way. They can't just slap anything together and expect us to be satisfied

Platforming and puzzles was always the weakest aspect of the series by far. Combat being the best part of course. Good on them for strengthening their strengths and trimming the fat.
