Tell me why Microshaft should port DX12 to 7. Why should they continue to maintain 7 when they have 11 now. Seems like a waste of resources for an OS with such a small user base. Microshaft is in the business of making money

No it doesn't, if Ford went to parliment and demanded their old cars be banned they would be laughed out of the room. Legislators have power that corporations do not and should not.

                Anonymous

Why would ford do that though? Ford wants to build a better and faster car because the road quality is getting better and their customers demand it. There are some customers that can't afford to update and some that are stuck in their ways, but the vast majority (more than 90%) want newer cars and don't care about the old ones. Maybe they'd like to see one in a museum, but they'd laugh about how bad cars used to be

If they could do it, and not have their name associated with it, they almost certainly would, forcing people to switch cars more often than they do will always drive up profits. Microsoft can, so they do. They also clearly aren't capable of consistently improving their products.

You can read the linked documentation and see that it's native DX12, though it is missing some features. It isn't converted to DX11 or any other API, that's moronic and you're moronic for imagining it.
Since you can't think and your world revolves around m-m-muh Elden Ring, I'll also let you know that DX12 was not the primary issue keeping that from working on 7; it tried to use other APIs that weren't in 7 and required hacking the game to replace, while its lack of DX12 Windows 7 support was simply worked around by using VKD3D.

The point is that slightly gimping your D3D12 renderer for Windows 7 is drastically less work than making a completely new one with another API. It was barely relevant as there was very little overlap between 7 being supported and D3D12 reaching mainstream use, but it was useful in theory.

          >it's just normal frickin obsolescence
Except it's not. Normal obsolescence is something naturally becoming obsolete. W7 is only becoming obsolete because microshit pays people to force w10+.
Most games that require W10+ are playable on W7. Sometimes with something as simple as deleting one file noone will ever even use. dbghelp.dll is an infamous one. Deleting that one file makes Victoria 3, a game that came out in late 2022 that requires W10+, perfectly playable on W7. Not that it's worth playing though. But if you look through other games that require W10+ and see dbghelp.dll, odds are very high that if you delete that single irrelevant file it's suddenly playable on W7. Some other games only require adding older DX versions to the folder and the game will recognize and use them making it playable on W7.
Devs are actively preventing the games from working on W7 when it doesn't even require more effort for them to allow it to run. Many other software is like that too.

Microshit is actively trying to kill off W7 because they want people to be on the versions where they've taken away user control and added a frick ton of telemetry to gather and sell your data. They benefit immensely from you "upgrading" to W10+ so they are trying to force it as hard as they can.

That's far from the truth, Linux only lost user share since W11 and it always hovered below 2%.
Linux also has updates by the way, and the popular distros like Ubuntu have a shorter LTS lifespan than Windows releases, your kind is not catered to no matter the ecosystem because developers absolutely hate dealing with third worlders that don't understand how outdated the shit they use is.

There's no reason that windows 7 can't still be used passed not wanting to use an old OS. It's 64 bit, it has every modern software standard that are needed for everything today. Not supporting windows 7 is a deliberate choice, it isn't because of "limitations if Windows 7"

Windows 7 is almost retro. People are going to start building period correct Windows 7 machines to play 15 year old games on authentic late 2000s early 2010s hardware soon. Experiencing brown and bloom the way it was meant to be played on 21 inch high latency 720p LCDs with shitty Razer headphones and green LED keyboards and mice.

A subset of people will make Vista machines and pretend Vista is good because it runs well on the best possible hardware that it could run on with all the updates it didn't have at the start.

The only regret I have about W10 is that the best edition made by some ruski is outdated because he left the repack scene due to lack of appreciation of his work or something, he did the best W10 repacks with an ability to setup most of the things on your own, you can even enable all the telemetry back if you're moronic, not even W7 was as good as a result, my PC works flawlessly with no slowdowns or anything like that for years to this day and the only game I couldn't run on it was Spider-Man.

Switching to Linux years ago made me realize how trash of a company Microsoft is

    >used wine back in the days to run my gold games - just to see if it works
    >now over 10 years later openSUSE is still a thing just like before - i can still play all the old games - now even easier than before due to wine being better and things like Lutris or Steam/Proton existing
    >Windows meanwhile is absolute dogshit when it comes to legacy media
    >constantly needed to switch locals through addons and system settings in order to play japanese games - only Linux that bullshit just doesn't exist
    >old games barely work on Windows 10 or above and you constantly have to check the pcgamingwiki to see which registry needs to get edited or which old drivers have to get installed while Lutris on Linux just does this thing for you
    >sometimes not even that works and you are forced to run old Windows software in a VM - Which again: Is not required on Linux at all

MS just wants you to buy and play the latest and newest stuff. As long as you are limiting yourself to that its perfectly fine. Otherwise you have to hope that GOG picks your game up and patches it i guess. Some games like Gothic on Steam run better through proton than they do on Windows.

Yes, as long as the browsers support your OS and the store accepts it. There's also a small can of worms in regards to web encryption standards that unmaintained OS simply won't get.

cater to the 0.9% Linux install base
Valve has a business interest in supporting Linux to avoid getting fricked over by Microsoft via Windows Store gatekeeping. Windows 7 can't help Valve with that.

I assume that Valve basically doesn't care about what Microsoft wants, except if what Microsoft wants would affect them. So Microsoft's push for newer versions, they don't care about in itself because that doesn't inherently affect them. But Microsoft angling for control over desktop apps was/is a big concern for Valve, so they propped up an alternative to avoid getting raped.

              You make zero sense.
First of all, web browsers still work on 7.
              But let's pretend they don't.
*I* could still buy at work, or via tablet or whatever and download old game at home.
But they don't want that. They are anti-customer, as always.

That's also what I would like for Nintendo's eShop, or Snoy's store or Microsoft's store.
They could do exactly that, but they also don't.
Microsoft even removes games all the time.
Nintendo just changes it to download only, which makes even less sense, because now it's really download only. They don't sell a single game, despite that being possible.

Speaking of W7 do the newer 12-14 core processors work on it? I only need 4 cores to work on W7 so I can dual boot to play older games at 144fps.
I remember seeing videos of people showing that even the 8 core's still worked on XP.

      Anonymous

yes 7 will work with up to 64 cores, it doesn't know the difference between p and e cores, but puts them to use regardless. however, new isn't always better. the input output hub in the CPU has been moved off the high quality silicon post 11th gen. so those CPUs are actually feel slower.

They also don't "support" anything. The installers they ship are "modified" InnoSetup. They're at the whims of some other company! IS does not list support for anything prior to Vista.

Try the IBM LinuxONE Community Cloud, a no-charge, 24 x 7, enterprise-grade, open access, shared public cloud environment on IBM's LinuxONE platform.

                >nooo, you are free from corporations!!!
                >for sure

                https://www.ibm.com/opensource/story/
IBM’s long history and strong commitment to open source is the best kept secret in open source. While open source communities have long appreciated IBM’s role in the movement, until our recent acquisition of Red Hat, not many people outside of those communities would have associated IBM with open source.

                hahahaha

Our first notable interaction with open source software was when a number of IBM engineers began contributing to Linux (yes, the Linux on which Red Hat Enterprise Linux is built). In the late 1990s, IBM supported Linux with patent pledges, a $1 billion investment of technical and other resources, and helped to establish the Linux Foundation in 2000.

In 1999, we helped to create the Apache Software Foundation (ASF), contributing thousands of line of code and dedicated resources to support the Apache Web Server projects

                hahahaha

      >FREE
You pay for it by selling your data, privacy, and control over your operating system.
The cost is significantly higher than any other paid OS. Just because you're too moronic to see it since it doesn't come out of your bank account doesn't mean it's not there.

    >People complain about owning anything
    >They didn't make their own graphics cards, cpus, motherboards, etc.
    >They didn't make their own OS
    >They didn't make their own coding language
    >They didn't make their own games to play

This is the end argument of "owning" something.

You should be using linux anyway, so it's good to either be cucked by 10 or 11, or be forced into using it.
