Consoles only existed because Microsoft sabotaged Windows for gaming ease of use so they could sell the Xbox, which was just a PC running a Windows-derived OS optimized for a 10 foot interface. You couldn't get that experience with Windows, only because Microsoft wouldn't let it happen.
Sony's Playstation, and even Nintendo's systems were similarly computers optimized for a 10 foot interface, but they build theirs on BSD, a UNIX-like OS because they obviously couldn't have Windows, and UNIX-like OSes also proved easier for the purpose.
The rise of GNU/Linux gaming devices with console-style experiences plus PC library compatibility heralds the end of the PC/Console market division as we have known it.
The future will be companies that benefit from restricting gaming like Microsoft moving on to Games as a Service business model where end users are prevented from owning anything.

Both Microsoft and Sony followed the same strategy of pursuing higher end hardware by taking a bath on the initial investment in the hopes of obtaining a very large install base and that future production costs would lower over time. It worked with the PS4 thanks to Xbox's massive fumble, but this generation things aren't looking too bright, especially with that massive chip shortage 4 years ago.
Nintendo, on the other hand, opted to avoid this issue a long time ago and diverged from the trending pursuit of performance and fidelity in favor of their IP power and market position.
What happens now, then? Aren't they learning exactly the wrong lessons from what's happening currently?

The first was not developing their OS alongside FreeBSD and keeping their engineers and system up to date with the advancements.

The console market has stalled in growth over the world for the past 5 years now. It's clear that consoles have reached the maximum it can grow to about 300 million consoles every generation of 7-8 years. It's unlikely that the PS5 can sell over 150 million consoles over it's lifetime. However PC gaming is still growing as a market as there are more PC gamers everyday, so the only smart move you can do is to have your games on PC.

I'm not surprised it ended up like this. Taking over 5 years and hundreds of millions dollars to make one video game couldn't be sustainable in the long run. All it would take is one bad launch to really frick over a company and is it even worth it at that point? Is it worth taking a big gamble every 5 years on a video game just because it HAS to look nice? Is it worth your console genuinely having zero fricking games on it because it takes forever to make? Nintendo doesn't take big gambles with their games like this. They just make a wide variety of games that they'll keep releasing as long as it sells a minimum amount. It's why nintendo keeps making fire emblem and pikmin games despite the fact that they never sell as well as mario or zelda. Cause it's much safer that way. You have your big releases and smaller ones to supplement it. Not to mention having a wide variety of games is much better in the long run since most people are gonna buy more than 1 game on your console
