I remember someone got really butthurt that the story was leaked (which wasn't good, the basic gist of it was that the characters turned out not to be human) while denying that was the story.
Nobody gave a shit about it being Mother 4 and Itoi even gave his blessing on it.
The real issue is they wanted the C&D clout and had no motivation to actually finish once they finally harassed nintendo (who has no say) and Itoi enough to tell them to frick off.

last i heard (years ago) they had lost interest, moved on, and only worked on it for a couple hours a week. they should just connect the loose ends and release what they have even if it feels incomplete

The only one I'm looking forward to is the Mother 1 remaster. The demo was cool.
Eh, the spritework and animations are good, and the remixes are cool, but it feels WAY too handholdy. The original isn't even all that difficult when you know what you're doing, but they toned it way too much in that demo. And there's a weird OC feel to some of the npcs and dialogue.

we got confirmation a couple years ago the devs couldn't make shit when internal builds of mother 4 released that
- the story had only an intro cutscene and nothing else
- battles barely worked, music combos were running on their own rhythm independently of the music playing
- builds were designed specifically around the reveal trailers, the train cutscene softlocks the game after completing
- used fricking minecraft .jar of all things as the file format for some of their data
i'm willing to bet nothing changed, they still know how to promote but can't make an actual game for the life of them
at least the devs behind mother encore released a demo that actually works. if nothing else thats a mother fangame that actually exists and isn't vaporware despite only being a demo
