Orcs are aliens from another world that waged war on the allied races before being cut off from their masters and forced to carve a place in the new world. The only thing they have going for them is the noble savage archetype in some of their races.
Alliance is your standard Tolkien good guy fare. They have even less going on then the horde. They like not being pillaged, raped, used in blood sacrifice or demon summoning rituals, starving to death, etc. They also like the company of other civilized people.
The horde and alliance mostly stick to themselves because of a massive ocean they live across. They fight because their natural inclinations are at odds and because of historical bad blood, but realistically it's because they let zombies into the horde that have a death agenda that they actively advance.
Honestly the lore for WoW is pointless, it's been retconned so many times that Horde and Alliance are completely meaningless

The Trolls are similar to the orc clans but are from Azeroth, but instead of uniting together like the orcs, one tribe was arbitrarily picked to join the hORdE for gameplay reasons
The Night Elves have a common ancestor with the Trolls, the Night Elves invited the demons into the world and the Night Elf Queen turned most of the Night Elves into Naga
The Tauren used to be allied with the Night Elves because of their druidic bond inside the Emerald Dream, this changed because Tauren needed to join the Horde and Night Elves on the Alliance
The Humans are the legacy of the Vrykul, split off into different corners of Azeroth
The Dwarves evolved from living stone
Gnomes don't really have any reason to exist, neither do Goblins, their lore was never really fleshed out in comparison to the others
The Worgen were Humans from Gilneas
The Forsaken were Humans from Lordaeran
The Draenei were from Draenor like the Orcs were, but were retconned multiple times to basically be sparefaring aliens

I got the Exploring Kalimdor book for christmas and genuinely, within the first 10 pages there's a really cool page showing a map of kalimdor and a semi-transparent page before it which plots the route the protagonists take in exploring the continent. Problem is, they've marked Ashenvale as Azshara. It basically killed my enthusiasm for the book because if they can't do the most basic level of research for *the fricking map*, it stands to reason that the rest of the stuff in the book is probably just bullshit they made up on the spot as well. Really fricking sad.
