It's boring as frick to grind from 1-80 for new players
Most of the armors don't even look cool until around lvl 60
Any armor besides human armor is lazy and gay looking

      What this anon said
All gear looks the same while leveling (and most of it looks bad), so it doesnt give you the drive to keep playing to make your character look cooler.
I played it to max level and my character looked almost no different than a level 30 or something.

        Anonymous

Max level is not max level, going to 80 is the tutorial, plus you can get cosmetics in the store any time

          Anonymous

It's still a significant time investment that the game has to keep you interested in so that you will keep playing to the real end-game (whatever it is, I got bored and quit when I finished the base game story).
          >you can get cosmetics in the store any time

Store cosmetics should be supplementary fun, not mandatory to avoid looking like shit. GW2 is the latter.

              Having them is one thing.

            >what makes you think any player is gonna want to sit through that in order to start playing the actual game?

Why does this game need a 10 hour tutorial when it is so incredibly easy and simplistic? There's not even a decent endgame to train you for just a handful of raids and fractals. Besides it's fricking shit as a tutorial since it doesn't even train you for that because everything pre 80 is so fricking easy you could do it naked with no trouble.

The reason why GW2 has 80 levels to slog through is because at the time WoW also had 80 levels and it wanted to be the wow killer more than it wanted to be a sequel to guildwars. That's it, and explains why progression fell off a fricking cliff after 30 levels with nothing about your character changing beyond bigger numbers, because it was an arbitrary last minute change from what was supposed to be a low level cap and a lot of horizontal progression. You know, like guild wars 1 had. At least until they redid the spec system (twice) in a move that fricked over newer players a whole lot.

In an alternate timeline they hid hundreds of skills across the map for you to hunt down and increase the options of your 1-5 on each weapon so you could start making actual builds

I don't own the newest expansion, and frankly, I don't care to defend anything. You either play the game for its gameplay, or you ignore it. The story in GW2 was outright terrible from day 1.
But then again, why care? Read a book if you want story. In video games, they are terrible and lacklustre; nobody should listen to what an NPC has to say.

Sure but MMOs all have mediocre gameplay outclassed by single player games just like you're suggesting for story. You accept worse gameplay because its multiplayer and you can get invested in your character, you can't do that when player agency is taken away and they censor character customization options.

                >you can get invested in your character
Just thought about it for a minute. You probably get invested in the character primarily from the wealth you accumulated, and nothing else. Quite interesting, and it completely disables the anon who is a storygay.

                >Yes, but you are playing MMOs primarily for the multiplayer interactions and so on.
So why not play a CO-OP action game like Vermintide or Monster Hunter? Almost certainly for character building, immersion and investment, which they ruin by forcing RL politics on you and censoring all the armor sets

Not even remotely true, it's about the rewards you obtain (gear/titles/cosmetics) to build and show off your character, wealth might be an indirect part of that but most MMO's make it irrelevant now

They also just had a whole story arc revolving around a pointedly agendered elder dragon, a meta event and chapter in the recent expac with a new agendered NPC, and the final chapter and finale to the decade long dragon storyline started at launch was a lesbian wedding. The main cast has 3 gays, 1 aspie and a cripple. The elder dragon thing is the only really obnoxius part though since it makes no sense why everybody in the world knows or gives a shit about it's preferred pronouns.

nothing about this game is good, story is fan-fic tier, gameplay is garbage, gamemodes such as dungeons and fractals are dead, pvp and wvw is seen as a joke by the devs, mounts killed the fun of pve, hard maps like HoT nerfed because gw2 players can't endure difficulty
gw2 is bad frick off already, anyone who thinks this game is in a good state is delusional

It's an MMORPG, they were never about the gameplay anon, you know that, I know that, everyone knows it because all MMO's have subpar gameplay compared with single player games. It's about becoming attached to your character, building them in various ways and having fun socially. Other MMO's aren't having your game is having so perhaps your game should consider putting more effort on producing fun content and improving the character building than appealing to people who don't even play and won't play your game.

Crysta is not an in-game currency anon, it's basically virtual money like having $30 Steam credit. You also ignored the other two examples but I think you knew you had no argument which is why you switched from "premium currency" to "any kind of service". I'm glad your game is sinking, you deserve it for not holding them accountable.

                >He thinks being a sub game is a bad thing
If you're a F2P game then you're forced to run as a "games as a service" model which leads to shitty design decisions that drag down the entire game because you have to prioritize retention over everything else. FFXIV doesn't have this problem precisely because it's a sub game which is why the developers can literally tell you to unsub and stop playing between content patches or when you're bored and come back when there's content to enjoy. Give me a true Guild Wars 1 successor and I'll happily pay a subscription for it.

This board is full of WoW and FF14 trannies. Gw2 might be a pozzed game but it's still alot better than those 2. The reason why it isn't successful is because it has the "horizontal progression" meme. All the rewards you get are usually just skins u wont even use. People see no point in playing and just quit.
Compare this to Lost Ark. A genuinely awful game where 90% of your play time is spent on chores. It's so bad that some quests wants you to stay on the same position for 9 minutes (im not making this up). Yet it does a good job of getting you addicted due to gear progression. No matter how garbage the content is in the end it feels rewarding.

Guild Wars 1 felt rewarding even with horizontal progression because the skins actually felt good instead of the bland ass shit you get in GW2.

Not an argument, even if you do manage to find a flaw with XIV (no one claimed it was perfect) it's still significantly better than the competition as far as censorship/being pozzed goes. WoW is literally ripping paintings off walls that feature women and painting half its npcs black retroactivity. Guild Wars 2 has literally censored practically all of its armor sets and has NPCs transitioning. Meanwhile in XIV we get shit like this for free, coming with this years summer event

The raiding in FFXIV is the best I've ever played, while the combat is simple the rotations (on some classes anyway) are satisfying and fun to play. The encounters are typically really satisfying and feel good to learn and beat, then if you're still hungry you can compete like an autist for ranking in PVE which can be fun. Obviously I'm talking about Savage and Ultimate here, dungeons and normal mode raid content is soul destroyingly easy. Although I think they're going to bring in more kinds of difficult content with a new style of dungeon that can have a "Mythic+" difficulty

                >or ingame trannies
What kind of cope is that? There's not a single day you dont meet one in-game? Every day there is people advertising night clubs in the casino.

You can't control where trannies will flock to anon, they're everywhere and will infest good things, especially things with sexual content because half of them have that sexual disorder where they get off to imagining themselves as women while pretending to be trannies, don't let those weirdos take good games from you. But you can however not have that kind of thing baked into your game by default by having a majority of your developers be that way inclined or by putting it into the game in the form of NPCs and "content". I also don't encounter them because I just stay at my personal house and queue for content away from public spam, there's no reason to do otherwise

Not that guy, and I haven't played through ff14 raids only watched them, but from what I can tell all the fights seem to be positional based and remind me of things like the Thunder King fight in pandaland where positional requirements are ratcheted up to 11 with no room for error.

In WoW one of my favorite fights was Alysrazor in firelands, a few of the ranged dps would pick up feathers on the ground to give themselves a flight buff while chasing the boss around the sky dodging clouds and hitting power rings starfox 64 style
The boss would then crash into the middle for a 2nd phase and you would have to keep sprinting through power rings to maintain/build your buff while dodging fire tornados and then enter a 3rd burn phase where if you played flawlessly and stacked your buff to maximum you would have 100% crit, 200+% haste (casting speed + GCD reduction) and go to town.
If your flying players weren't good you wouldn't have enough dps and wipe.

Most memorable fight in the game for me and hella fun
Imo the most fun mmo fights have more than just positional requirements involved

You're completely right anon, I appreciate you pointing that out. It sounds like a lot of fun for the feather players. WoW raiding definitely had its moments but between the highs a vast majority just felt very underwhelming, maybe you're right that XIV perfected positional fights but lacks variety some others do. The music in XIV is insane at times too, really pumps you up for the fights and 8 players dancing to the mechanics in synergy, at times doing completely different mechanics just feels so satisfying to pull off.

Honestly when I see videos of ff14 fights it just reminds me of destiny raids where all 6 players have a specific job they need to do, which when I played it was really frustrating because sometimes you just want to grug brain and fight things

I dont think ff14 has any choice but to force positional fights because the entire combat in the game encourages you to stand still with stiff movement, locked animations and that really really long gcd
WoW's core movement gives you way more freedom to move and still be effective so you'll occasionally have fights where players have to jump to different platforms or chase a running speed boss while still dps'ing, or start kiting the boss through portals etc

          >GW2 has gameplay
Either you're full of shit or never played it. All levels of play in GW2 are pretty brainless mostly due to how the weapon system works. Very limited action bars and rotations with the only bit that could be called complicated being buff stacking. Enemies and PvE boss encounters themselves are hillariouslly simple and just use one shot mechanics to give an illusion of depth.

Yeah, all mmos are brainless while leveling, but at least you get to play the game and minmax your efficiency. In FFXIV you run run from one movie to the next movie. Endwalker MSQ was like 35 hours long with about 3 hours of gameplay.

I basically just stopped caring after a certain point and gave up.

I was also a bit pissed off to find out that all the post-game story quests are locked behind a surprise paywall so I didn't even get the full game despite buying the full game and latest expansions. Can someone tell me what the appeal of MMOs is? I've played WoW up to 50 only but I imagine raids are just longer dungeons essentially. Is there more to it or do I just not "get it"

      Anonymous

The appeal of mmo's was talking and playing with people online before social media, youtube guides, online wikis and steam existed.
Now everything is solved for you so the only challenges remaining are autistically grinding (or buying boosts) for gear to do the hardest raid or otherwise PvP which blessed be is actually fun in WoW if your gear is decent.

Tl;Dr mmo's are obsolete and the sweet spot was early to mid 2000's

Why would you switch? Blizzards internal voicecom came years after everyone was using vent/teamspeak. And using blizz voice means getting into the cuck cage of blizz supervision.

Raiding was meant to be done with a group of your close friends or a group of people you met in game and mesh well with to become friends
Remove all that and you get the same experience as looking for raid

          Anonymous

At this point raiding appeals to a specific kind of player who wants to wipe on really hard overtuned content over and over for the rush of finally beating it with his friends

If you join a raiding guild but you dont really become friends with anyone half the fun of working together just poofed into thin air

That said every so often blizzard makes a really really fricking good raid, probably the last one I remember fondly was nighthold in legion a few years back but I was properly sweaty back then and just playing casually now which is enjoyable enough if you pretend the main story with sylvanas/jailer doesn't exist

People get their social interaction fix from it.
Its the only reason to go multiplayer over singleplayer. mmos are basically replacement for couch potatoes to what team sports are for regular people who dont fear exercise.

Actual answer: variety. Good MMOs offer a variety of (optional) content you can tackle and you can aggregate the rewards from that content on a single character that exists within a persistent world.
You have people that miss the point and only pursue power gain after power gain resulting in abominations like World of Raidcraft that abandon all the soul of the genre by focusing exclusively on one aspect instead of diversifying. MMO enjoyers partake in every activity: PvE, PvP, crafting, fishing, and other side content, getting the most out of a fully fleshed out persistent universe.

        >Good MMOs offer a variety of (optional) content
Agreed. It's a shame modern mmos like FFXIV have nothing but banal dogshit for side-content. It's like a bad collection of arcade games.

game has plenty of raids and challenge modes now.
I haven't played since the latest expansion came out but the game is still going strong and if it was "doomed to fail" I can't see why it would still have plenty of players 10 years later.

Went back to play GW2 on a strong high level thief I used to play. Enemies of my character's level were just insanely tough and doing more damage than I could handle. It would take so long to beat them.

This isn't what it used to be like. What changed? Why are the enemies so much stronger than before? What should I do?

Are you core thief? I feel like the game assumes you're playing one of the elite specs at this point.

Most of the core specs are really underpowered at this point. That said I remember playing a condi thief and doing okay. Try looking up core builds on youtube if you are dead set on not buying the expansions.

Really trod all over the "horizantal progression" angle of GW2. They made the new specialiations notable more powerful than baseline to encourage they be used. So now it has an ongoing power creep with map trains so people can unlock them whe returning. But it still stops build variety in its tracks.

GW2 is an average game that only got worse.

thief got his self-heal passive heavily nerfed with a patch somewhere in the recent xpac.

    Because it's shit.
Not entirely shit (great artstyle, cool environments, interesting content) but if you play this game for a while you start seeing the cracks.
    >extremely repetitive gameplay and a lot of grinding
    >no world PvP
    >no competing for resources
    >mostly shitty instanced PvP
    >all the best skins are store only
    >PvP balance is beyond broken with all the new specs and classes
    >introduced mounts for WoWbabies
    >store skins are often eye cancer that visually clashes with the aesthetic of the game
I pre-ordered this game and played it for several years, but after a while you just log on and do the same thing every day. Becomes very tedious.
Still probably better than current WoW and FF but that's not saying much.

I actually returned from having not played for three years, leveled an engineer and had a lot of fun with the gameplay. I think GW2 is the only other MMO that rivals WoW in terms of how responsive the gameplay feels, despite it being very animation locked most of the time.

Once I finished Heart of Thorns and was working on the Living World for Path of Fire, the story was REALLY fricking tanking in quality. I couldn't stand the format of the quests, nor the dialogue or characters; I don't care for anyone in Dragon's Watch at all, honestly. At the same time, I didn't wanna just skip it all because then I'd be forcing myself through a story I had no context about and wasn't enjoying. So I just quit.

GW2 could be great if it wasn't trying to be a Guild Wars fanfic.

      Anonymous

I remember playing at launch, the animation lock even being on rolls and realizing there were no new skills to get or ways to affect my 1-5 abilities made me quit the game around lvl 30

I figured they'd never fix the animation locks making everything feel stiff and never looked back.

Also frick the jump physics and their lack of momentum in a game that had kino platforming segments

imo gw2 struggles because it can't find its stride as a game. It has a lot of ideas but never really commits to anything, to hear them talk about gw2 at release one would have thought it was going to have revolutionary gameplay and actually, if anything, it regressed from gw1 and became more like a generic mmo. The biggest problem with it is that all the classes feel very samey and while they aren't weak, they sometimes feel ineffectual because you don't have the same kinds of builds and synergies that gw1 had. gw1 managed to be compelling despite being a fairly simple game, gw2 has all this unfocused, wide but shallow bloat and it doesn't seem to serve any real purpose. Its novelty wears off pretty quick

Gw2 shot itself in the sideways pussy by shitting on pve and the trinity. It is permanently off a lot of peoples radar because of this. The combat takes a long time for it to "click" or understand.

The absolute best part about gw2 is they figured out how to create a game for almost every type of mmo player. You can obtain basically max gear from every type of content. There are so many things to grind for after you get geared that will either net you a ton of gold or look really cool or a utility quality of life item or account wide ability or shop currency. The mounts are unique(until Dragonflight where they copy gw2s mount system so blatantly that i want to punch someone in the face) and when you earn them it feels great.

The most hard to imagine part is that ilvl never increases with a patch or expansion. You can FINISH GEARING. You can take your time. You don't have to poopsock to stay current. New game came out? Go play it! Your progress will not suffer. It is the only mmo i dont feel chained too when i get into it.

Tl:dr im having palpitations from too much caffeine so i didn't sleep well so its all jumbled thoughts. Its figured out how to truly give you freedom to play how fast/slow or hard/casual you want while giving you a path to power.

      >until Dragonflight where they copy gw2s mount system so blatantly that i want to punch someone in the face

      Good
Copying other people's homework and just outright doing it better is what made blizzard so successful in the first place
I just hope they still have enough people there that remember how to do it since they kept trying to do their own thing and failing miserably the past decade or so.

I agree, i hope they copy everything from gw2. They already figured it out. I doubt it greatly that WoWs engine will allow for not jank movement from a vehicle. They have never ever ever made a new movement method feel even close to gw2s mounts.

They were right about one thing, I hate MMOs and really liked GW2. But the thing is I still hate MMOs, so once I hit 80, did like 6 out of the 8 available dungeons, and finished the story (this was before any of the expansions) I was done. Before launch: Horizontal progression only, your hard earned gear will never be outdated!
First patch: Hey guys we made vertical progression.

Before launch: Biggest battlegrounds you've ever seen, there will be so many people in the fights you won't believe it!
Post launch: hey please don't bring so many people into pvp our game can't handle it. small gang pvp only in our big battlegrounds plz. Also pvp dominated by invisible siege weapons that ignore all terrain, with ballista bolts eating your kneecaps from underground.

I honestly don't know what happened afterwards. It might be the best game ever by now, and I don't care. The dev's blatant lies ensured they won't get a dime from me, not now nor ever.

im convinced people that say gw2 is better than any mmo on the market right now literally only got it like last year, gw2 used to be such a good game but arena net is GENUINELY fricking moronic and nerf things that are fun (dungeon farming) never update or give us more of things that are fun (fractals) and the game is just unironically pay2win.

  88. 2 years ago

I liked the game a lot but I have zero reason to play it. Once you're 80 + the hero point shit there's literally nothing to do other than grind for gay ass legendaries that barely do more damage than the weapons you can get from fractals. I do think the feel of the game is really good though, and the jumping puzzles are pretty fun, but once you're done you're done. There's really no endgame other than fashion which seems to be a common trend with mmos
