Fear and Hunger really interests me but I saw a little bit of a let's play and now I have zero interest in playing it. It really does look like trial and error slop, despite how interesting of a concept it is.
I kick myself for not just jumping into it blind but that probably would've been an extremely frustrating experience.
heres what the first couple hours of your blind run will look like >start game, choose character backstory options that could either massively help or gimp you, you have no idea so ??? >run into an enemy >you've probably heard you need to cut off limbs so you go to cut off the enemies limb >you don't RNG kill it in one shot because you damage rolled low and the enemy attacks you and cuts your arm off and you are bleeding >die, restart >get attacked by an enemy and this time youre just bleeding instead of limb loss >do not find a bleed-heal item randomly in the crates so you just die >saving is severely limited so you have to restart the ENTIRE game every time you die early before you get a chance to save >eventually you will get frustrated enough to look at a guide
Anon it’s worse than trial and error, because that would mean that you would try, fail, but then learn for the next run so you don’t do the same mistake.
But the main mechanic is literally a coin flip. You can play perfectly and just lose a leg because the game said so. I’m sure this game is for some people out there, but no one can convince me that random shit like this where my skill and knowledge are null and void is good game design.

It's pretty implicit that the enemy is about to do something especially fricky whenever the flavor text for coin attacks come up. Even more so, the flavor text for something an enemy is doing is obviously indicating you should prepare for it. If you're confusing flavor text for starving or going mad for something explicitly mentioning an enemy doing some preparatory action, you're a fricking moron.

have you at all considered you should be actively avoiding combat encounters until you have a full party or better gear. you gain virtually nothing by killing enemies other than some loot which may or may not be useful, and theres no exp system so its not like you can level up

The first game is unbelievably shit. Not even remotely worth a play.
The second game is does everything Resident Evil does but infinitely better with more distinctive and interesting mechanics of its own. Only thing it doesn't match it in is direct active combat, but that's not really something to be compared anyway and ironically the classic games and their shit combat is praised more than the remakes here.
The second game is ABSOLUTELY worth playing. Unironically one of the best games I've played.
