This is actually a good thing considering attributing games to studios is no longer reliable as the entire staff just gets replaced between games

      Anonymous

It's a tendency among people to associate creative output with a brand instead of the actual creatives who made it. You see it not just with video games, but also TV shows, anime, etc. As long as the studio / company name is the same, they assume the end result will be the same.

Consoles were still outputting video at 600x400 sub 30 fps while the PCs at the time were already going for 1280x720 above 60. Consoles have always been historically underperformant in comparison with PCs.

          >PCs at the time were already going for 1280x720

I remember almost every monitor and tv being a CRT (or projection) in 2003. And when LCD and plasma became popular a lot of people still had CRTs because flatscreens were so expensive.
In fact the ps3, 360, and Wii all shipped with composite cables.

            Anonymous

            >>PCs at the time were already going for 1280x720
            >Were they?
Not quite. In the early 2000s PCs ran the desktop at 1024x768 or 1200x1024. The games were ran depending on your videocard, at either 640x480, 800x600 or 1024x768 for the high end.
720p as a standard for PC came later with the adoption of widescreen LCDs after 2005, and even those were mostly 1366x768.

            Anonymous

PC screens didn't come with composite connections. They came with VGA, and later DVI, which started to be used as the first flatscreens rolled out.

              Anonymous

              I know.
The point about composite cables is that they're not hd. Which was the main selling point of flatscreen tvs. Which raised in popularity at the same time as flatscreen computer monitors. Which were the main monitors available in 16;9. Which is what 1280x720's aspect ratio is.

Not having any good combat-related facilities sucked considering what Emerald had, but in terms of collecting shit, ORAS had a lot going for its post-game. The way the National Dex was integrated made revisiting old routes more enjoyable, and the Mirage Islands gave you a ton of new Pokemon to find. And although the Delta Episode is trash in retrospect, it was still a fairly novel addition. ORAS definitely had a much better postgame than XY, or even the Gen VII games after it and the Switch titles only rivaled it with their DLC. All it needed was a battle tower that wasn't as barebones as the Maison.

      >Hoenn is still imbalanced type-wise, heavily favoring water. It’s especially noticeable in Alpha Sapphire, in which Team Aqua (the villains of the piece) use a lot of water types. It feels like there are water Pokémon in nearly every battle, and I have an overleveled Pikachu to show for it.
      >You also have to navigate many bodies of water, since much of the late-game involves the HMs Surf and Dive to get from place to place. Diving was really neat back in 2002 when it was new, but I found it incredibly tedious in Alpha and Omega.

No one ever read the full review apparently. Both "there are way too many water-type Pokemon, my electric-type Pokemon can solo most trainers" and "massive bodies of water are tedious to navigate" are valid complaints.

That's the most common, widely accepted criticism of Gen 3. The issue is that they worded it in the dumbest way possible when doing the review score. It's like if they criticised the framerate in Dragon's Dogma 2, something everyone is doing, but then in the summary just put "Not Enough Images" as if that's a good way of summing it up, or summed up the mtx in the game as "Too Many Items".

          Anonymous

It was a tongue-in-cheek comment meant to be read after the full review. It was supposed to be funny, it was worded "in the dumbest way possible" on purpose. But people skipped to the end, got angry at the low score, and then singled out that one statement without even understanding what it meant.
If they gave the game a 9/10, no one would've cared. But they DARED to give their favourite game a "bad" score, so the reviewer must be dumb. Look at what he wrote here, "too much water", LOL is he stupid?!

They were like a parallel of what happened to Cracked. Both started going down the tubes at pretty much exactly the same time in the early 2010s. That said, I've realized since that even when Cracked was "good" it was still kinda shitty. I mean I learnt so much misinformation from those lists: I first heard the whole "Lion King is a rip-off of Kimba the White Lion" myth on Cracked (which has been thoroughly debunked at this point,) it's where I first heard the "Star Wars was saved by the editor's/George's ex-wife, Marcia" myth (you might've heard this one - it's COMPLETE BULLSHIT lol.) There's probably a ton of other 'facts' that I learned from Cracked that are complete bullshit that I still believe

I don't like YMS much either but goddamn his Kimba video is genuinely great.

Cracked is pretty much dead. Literally nobody comments on their articles anymore. I remember when each article had hundreds of comments. The last time I visited the site was around the time that All That cast member from the newer seasons joined their writing staff.

They pretty much died completely around 2017/2018. I know people still complain about 'woke' today but that whole buisness model of blogs getting weirdly progressive (but in a stupid way that seemed to be designed to make readers angry which in turn meant they would engage with the content because a hate-click is still a click) just up and died at some point early on in 2017. Japanese anime from the 60s also about lions. There was an internet myth for decades that The Lion King was a complete rip-off of it but it turns out the people peddling that had either not seen Kimba and were making shit up OR were being intentionally disingenuous to create a fake narrative. Then some youtuber actually sat down and watched the entirety of Kimba and found out it was complete horseshit:

I dont know why you've been obsessively reiterating the fact that cracked posted false info for the past 3 hours straight. It was a comedy website. If you took information from there on a factual basis that's on you. The only point of bringing up the comparison was that cracked is one of the most blatant and easily referenced websites when it comes to demonstrating a forced narrative shift among internet/comedy culture. It didn't gradually shift over time, one month it was comedy the next it was far left identity politics and then pretended it was always this way. Thats all.

I don’t remember it being so fast. I can pinpoint to the moment it changed though, it was when they introduced 2 elements: 1) a latino woman writter, the first female writter, dont remember her name 2) an article about mental health, it was a dude (that kater became a writter for cracked) that wrote about growing up poor or something like that. That article was one of the biggest pieces in that page so they started focusing more on social issues that people related to.

The characters don’t look a thing like Lion King, they both share minor features and a vague shape because that’s what it means to properly cartoon a lion, and every important detail such as the face is completely different.

Jesus Christ, you people. YMS is a dogfricking homosexual, but he did his due diligence and showed the Kimba ripoff myth for what it was in a way that couldn't possibly be misunderstood or debunked. Anyone who actually watches Kimba will come to the same conclusion that he did- the two properties are wildly different in both content and tone and any similarities are entirely superficial, with the biggest pieces of "evidence" that Disney ripped off Kimba came from a Kimba movie that released AFTER The Lion King.

All you homosexuals can do is lie about what he said in his video in the hopes that the people you're talking to are as moronic as you are and will just take what you say at face value.

Social justice causes tend to be "flanderized" into their most basic black and white aspects. It's how we went from "don't bully fat people because it does nothing to help and can instead aggravate the problem" to "actually being fat is good and powerful and brave and the doctors are wrong", basically the message that stuck was "being fat good, saying anything negative bad". Likewise the whole sexualization of women thing got reduced to "straight men libido bad".

which a day or so later dropped the part about men sucking, presumably because an editor realized that it was very off putting and aggressive without reason.

They were like a parallel of what happened to Cracked. Both started going down the tubes at pretty much exactly the same time in the early 2010s. At first it wasn't that in your face, much like cracked, but then 2013-2014 light switch and suddenly it was like listening to some homosexualy Berkeley student whine about insane shit on every article.

I remember when Mafia 2 released.
2k had bought out ads that plastered the entire site top to bottom and at the top of their page was a review trashing it.
I'm sure one of their writers was one of the 5 guys and it sent them in to damage control. I stopped reading games journalism pretty much all together around that time anyway so I don't know if they recovered.

The founder left to write comic books and left the single most homosexualy SJW on the staff in charge.

Yeah I recall how good RPS was, it's possibly the foremost example of a once-good gaming journalism site turned to shit by SJW dipshit. It was created by alumni from PC Gamer UK, which had always been incomparably better than its US counterpart, both in vidya taste and in writing and fun. As they left and as the site grew, vacancies were inevitably filled up by the same scum which shit up vidya journalism elsewhere. Altho one of the PC Gamer alumni himself, John Walker, is arguably the biggest culprit with regards to the socjus mafia.

pathologic 2 is the ultimate filter in gaming. i don't think any game even comes close.

I've never played Pathologic 2, tell me everything that is wrong with this review. Why is it wrong to expect free beds to be usable and for occupied homes to have some food in them? What is one supposed to do to improve at finding food in the game?

        Anonymous

There's no food in homes because there's a plague ravaging the town and the supply train hasn't shown up for weeks. Everyone is starving.
You can't sleep in any random bed because that's weird, you don't just let strangers sleep in your bed. You can only sleep in the beds of people who know you and trust you, and you can't sleep in the beds of abandoned houses because those are crawling with bandits who will kill you.
The game has an entire trading system which is mostly how you'll find food. Gathering one type of item to get food from an npc type who'll trade you for it. You also have shops and money to buy food, but that is very much secondary because of how the ingame economy works and how inflated prices become once the plague hits.

What the other anon said is true, but also a big part of the story is that you're supposed to be sick, hungry and tired. It's actively pushing the player to make stressful and resourceful decisions, and at times have to let someone die because otherwise would mean letting someone die yourself. An experienced player better at handling fights and looting can sustain themself much better so there is a skill for it, but for a first time player it's one of the best combinations of story and gameplay working in tandem.

In addition to what the other 2 guys said, the "Dark Souls" comparison is the stupidest thing ever. Not just because "it's difficult therefore DARK SOULS" but because the first Pathologic was also brutally difficult and it came out in 2005. 4 years before Demon's Souls even came out

i understood you, and my point still stands. He's used to brown games so he thought a game from the 90s would be brown as well. Again, Imagine being used to colored movies then watching an old movie and being surprised it's black and white and not colored. This is even more baffling since he said he used to play games back then so he should know that games from that era weren't brown.

It could also be the fact that the game is a fricking pain in the ass to control and I honestly doubt any reviewers got past the third level without god mode. I can’t even finish the goddamn game on easy, it is insanely difficult and requires precision the controller just doesn’t afford. That being said i never complained about the control scheme itself even when it came out.

      Anonymous

I haven't played it personally but controls were probably ass, despite the modern control scheme. First-person shooters on console auto-aim for you, that's how they "fixed" the issue: from the crosshair slowing down when you're hovering an enemy, to the weapon magically rotating towards targets when you press the "aim button", to actual aim hacks.
I doubt that game did any of this. Aiming with a stick without any sort of assist is indeed terrible.

    >Honestly, I'm reminded of Valerie Solanas - the radical feminist writer best known for unapologetically shooting Andy Warhol in 1968 - who defined the slimy struggle against patriarchy in her 1967 SCUM manifesto, an instruction manual on eliminating men for the sake of world peace. I'm thinking about this because Showtime! is a world without men -- there are male Theets with plasticky mustaches, sure, but no "men" in the Warhol or Mario sense.

    >Solanas writes that the first type of man-obsessed woman "[sees] the female as worm," but true SCUM "consider themselves fit to rule the universe." With more grace and pacifism (thank God), Princess Peach: Showtime! lets Peach move closer to this more boisterous, commander-of-the-galaxy kind of woman. She's spinning into being a girl with some agency. And she doesn't even need a gun.

Things like to always check sources to see if they actually say what a journalist is claiming they say. That every headline that ends in a question mark is a clickbait scam. And to never trust Daily Mail on anything.

That is exactly what women who actually play video games want though. They LOVE games that let you play house like Stardew Valley, The Sims and Animal Crossing. Even a lot of narrative hidden object games and girl's adventure games like Nancy Drew series often make a big deal about protagonist's outfits and outfit changes because real biological women genuinely fricking love that stuff.
Women will never be the core audience for serious and mature action-adventure triple A sagas no matter how much feminists who don't play games and their soiboy allies wish it would be so.

slightly too fast. Hottest guys are reskinned cities - so player "conquers" them while shooing away other females, then cares about their good mood in exchange for gold and other resources from that post.

At this point you’re just pointing out male oriented video games are about destroying and humiliating other men, en masse.

a game that casts you as a noble woman in a society with limited legal rights for women who must intrigue, gossip, marry or even straight up frick her way to power would be interesting. no reason why they couldn't use poison or assassins either. for all I know the princess maker games are already like this

I remember it was talked about that DOA Extreme Beach Volleyball had a surprisingly sizeable female fanbase because the actual volleyball + other mini-games were actually fun and with decent online multiplayer for it all too (at least by the standards of the time). Then there was a huge amount of unlockable set of unique cosmetics for each character. I also heard the online community was shockingly chill and respectful for the type of game it was.
DOA Extreme 2 ruined it because the cosmetic options and amount of minigames were scaled back greatly, the gameplay was buggy, and the breast physics where they would jiggle randomly in asynchronous directions had the coomers divided if that was hot or weird as frick.

Reading the reviews for this is such a weird experience. I mean, on one hand you have feminists saying its a massive step forward and on the other hand you have male feminists saying it ain't.

too lazy to look up the picture
but one where the journo complained there wasn't an ending
then the dev commented and said the easiest tutorial difficulty doesn't have an ending he had to play on at least normal
then the journo went back, deleted and banned the dev, and lowered the score and changed the review complaining

      1280x1024.

      >complains about hunting monsters
I mean I get the point when talking about e.g. Factorio, but come on, this one is being a wuss on purpose.
That said, some kind of photo/studying animals game could potentially be pretty kino; studying their patterns and behavior, documenting their mating habits and so on.

To be fair, that was the reasoning behind the original monster hunter games. The current quests you're given are basically "Today I tripped on the forest and fell face first into a pile of rathalos shit. Go kill the rathalos and it's accompanying rathian for the humiliation i've endured.".

        Anonymous

It's still dumb to whine about it in a videogame, but the series hasn't given a shit about keeping up that facade for quite a while. Now it's shit like "I think this monster looked at me funny, kill its entire family".

This was one of the dumbest things. I don't get what makes people react that way. Who gives a flying frick what one reviewer thinks? How the hell can you actually feel outrage and anger over something like that? And it wasn't even like he gave it a 3/10 or something like that.
That kind of loyalty or fanaticism or whatever you'd call it is just weird.

I remember back in 2005 or so when the Wii was announced, I was on both the Nintendo and Xbox general boards asking about the consoles to legitimately see which might be better, and both sides thought I was trying to secretly flame them because both saw my positive post on the other board and did not understand I could be anything but a one console fanboy.
