Mato, the guy who translated Mother 3, is an official translator. Even back then, he was doing subtitle stuff for official anime DVD releases. There is literally no need for another localization. It's because people have the memory of a gold fish when it comes to scandals and fall for peer pressure. Their friends all buy the game and they buy it to try and fit in, and somehow despite over a decade of bullshit in some cases they still trust those companies to make a decent product. It's safer to assume that a work of passion done by a fan is gonna be more high effort than something done by a paid employee.
Tomato, the guy who did the fan translation, literally has his own site where he documents and details the translations (or lack thereof) of games, including full comparisons between multiple translations of games, official and fanmade. He's the most diligent translation expert in relation to games, and is extremely transparent in his work. He had a dev journal he regularly updated for many years about the progress on the Mother 3 translation patch he made.

Removing jump momentum was the biggest one, and that doesn't take into account the bullshit that the game pulled with players who weren't necessarily skilled but just weren't frick-ups (Tripping, giving the weakest player a final smash on their next stock). And he wrapped this up in a nice gritty package to deter from the fact that Brawl was actually more childish than the first two games, which is saying something. Removing jump momentum was the biggest one, and that doesn't take into account the bullshit that the game pulled with players who weren't necessarily skilled but just weren't frick-ups (Tripping, giving the weakest player a final smash on their next stock). And he wrapped this up in a nice gritty package to deter from the fact that Brawl was actually more childish than the first two games, which is saying something. Any other series would have been killed off if they tried to casualize themselves to the extent that Brawl did.
Honorable mention to Ooblets, DmC and MML3.
never played competitive Smash in my life, never did a wavedash back in the day, but touching Brawl and feeling those physics was just painful. A few of my family and friends felt similarly.
