I have had all kinds of controllers with all kinds of issues since most of them are over twenty years old and never had buttons wear out. What the hell do you guys do with your controllers?
I like it, but it occasionally and randomly lags. And I mean a whole second or two of lag. I guess there must be some interference, but I haven't had other controllers do that.
>i was never able to notice any lag >my brain is literally so slow that i don't understand that admitting this outs me as a brainlet with the reaction time of a stoned tortoise.
A lot of people don't notice lag. Some because they have nothing else to compare it to. Some because they don't understand there are different types of "lag". Some because their brain is literally that slow. Some because they're in a copium induced haze. There are probably many other causes as well.
Hold on, so a SNES mini controller has the same connector as a Wii CC and can be interchangable with it? Does it mean that USB adapters for SNES mini will work for Classic Controller as well?
Saturn pad is alright but there's no diamond layout, you have to move your thumb if you want to press more than two buttons, this doesn't happen on the PS1 or SNES controller. You won't be playing THPS with this pad.
If I had to settle on ONE controller, I'd pick the DualSense too. It's a jack of all trade but only a master of some, but it does it all more than good.
Slightly bigger, more comfortable to hold. First time I held it while still having a PS4 myself it felt literally like sex for my hands. Buttons and sticks are similar, slightly "clicker" on the DualSense, but battery life is a lot better and vibration even in emulators feels much nicer.
It's still polling at 1000Hz like the DS4 too, so even wireless it's lower latency than most other controllers wired.
Plus one extra button you can map for example to a emulator menu, etc.
Any of the Xbox controllers honestly. I'll get hate for it but The Duke is a personal favorite. The sheer size fit well for my hands and it's one of the only controllers you can also use to beat someone to death with and go right back to playing a game.
>it's one of the only controllers you can also use to beat someone to death with and go right back to playing a game.
The Dukes break if you look at them wrong though. 10/10 controller 2/10 reliability.
I once dropped a duke and was saddened to see the grip it landed on completely shattered and there was about an inch wide hole in it. They're very hollow inside and prone to breaking. Controller S however is much more tightly put together and won't break as easily. I do find the Duke to be comfortable.
Odd, I've full slammed The Duke against the ground numerous times in my gamer rage days. Never broke a single one of them, the cable covering on half of them though tore apart and exposed the wires.
I love the MD controller, Saturn the same? (with the trigger buttons obviously)
Just in case there's any other dukegays, don't bother with the bullshit hyperkin release. Works great for awhile but starts failing (Left stick was stuck slightly left, face buttons sticking etc.), not just my isolated incident either, quite a few people have had similar issues.
Such ashame as it worked great for a few weeks.
It wasn't, I grew up with this thing and I love it. Not the most consistent input method and definitely not the most versatile, but where it fits it's super fun.

Sorry, no info on the site where I found the pic.
as someone who is left-hand dominant, the wiimote/nunchuck is the worst thing to use bar none. I mainly used my Wii for virtual console and some indie games in the end.
it was an interesting combination of an analog left stick and a pointer input, theoretically you could have the best of both worlds with analog movement and mouse like aiming. In practice pointer turning was such a pain that the advantages it had over controllers were diminished. All we really got out of it were a lot of mediocre first person shooters, I've always to see some sort of 3d run n gun use the scheme, might have been perfect for a 3d contra.
>in practice pointer turning was such a pain that the advantages it had over controllers were diminished.
The game that used it the best was RE4 and that was a port of a Gamecube game. Even then they had to give you a cursor at all times, even when you weren't holding a gun and shouldn't have had one to account for the inaccuracy of what you were pointing at. It also made recoil impossible. I would have liked a game built from the ground up with similar controls to RE4.
oh absolutely not...I think i started preferring a keyboard for anything that doesn't really "need" an analog stick for nearly 20 years now.
it's the workload shift from thumbs to all fingers. easier to do multiple fast inputs as well.
I know just doing a dash jump while holding a charged shot in MMX feels way better on a keyboard to me and i can single-wall wall-hike in super metroid faster and easier.
>upgrade in 1998.
inward-facing grips for maximum wrist discomfort, less buttons than most 5th gen consoles, slippery nylon ball under d-pad, shorter cable.
The 3D pad isn't much better than the Dreamcast pad. The triggers make holding it a pain even if it has an incredible D-pad. The worst thing about the Dreamcast controller is the wire sticking out of the bottom instead of the top.
Needed better sticks to. After too much COD I had two controllers get fricked from all the clicking of the sticks. They were worn down with drift problem. If those two things were improved that would be the best controller to use.
it's never going to have a great dpad when it's in that position, it's a zerosum game between the left stick and the pad, 360 favored stick ergonomics, ds favored pad ergonomics.
The positioning doesn't bother me as much as the dpad itself. It's not horrible like the xbox Duke dpad or painful like the Dreamcast dpad, it's just a meh dpad. The original xbox one dpad is better.
As someone who actually used image related. I never really had any issues with this gamepad, and liked it. Though the L and R shoulder buttons could've been a little better.
Been using them for emulation for almost 20 years now. They're insanely good. Only thing that comes remotely close to that dpad are controllers made by Hori.
I've always needed dpads to have separate buttons for the best precision possible. So I've stuck with Sony controllers all my life, somehow they're the only ones that ever did that.
There's a reason fighting game pros use the DS4 exclusively when it comes to using a pad instead of a stick

Mate, you don’t know what you’re talking about, DS4 doesn’t use separate buttons, do you think the switch has a good “dpad”
Retrobit's are pretty good, in my opinion. I have the 2.4GHz version and it works great, i can tell from experience the latency is better than the Xbox One controller, if you use one of those. It has some changes compared to the original controller, namely the clicky shoulder buttons, but it's still as ergonomic as the original. I'd recommend it, it even has an adapter to use on the Saturn itself.
I've got two grey Saturn controllers, fantastic for 2D games. I think the only thing that rivals it is the Neo Geo controller for the PS2, at least in my opinion.
It was the best for a while. But the M30 D-Pad surpasses the Saturn one with ease. IF you are lucky. And you didn't get the mushy one.
The HORI Fighting commander is better than m30. It is twice as heavy for a start. The m30 is too thin.
The M30's buttons don't wear out nearly as fast as the HFC's.
I have had all kinds of controllers with all kinds of issues since most of them are over twenty years old and never had buttons wear out. What the hell do you guys do with your controllers?
Never tried it, but i've heard good things about it. The dpad on the Saturn controller is one of the best things about it, so i'm curious.
I think the m30 benefits from the little extra weight but I still prefer the Saturn controller
I like it, but it occasionally and randomly lags. And I mean a whole second or two of lag. I guess there must be some interference, but I haven't had other controllers do that.
I have the wireless one and I’ve never had any lag
>i was never able to notice any lag
>my brain is literally so slow that i don't understand that admitting this outs me as a brainlet with the reaction time of a stoned tortoise.
I think anyone would've noticed this amount of lag. It's very sporadic though. I guess it's just something in my environment that interferes with it.

>8bit Doo Doo
NO, just get either Wii classic Controller (Model 1 with USB adapter) or even a Wii U.
What's the advantage of a model 1 over the model 2?
Analog shoulder buttons
Only downside is that might not work in some emulators.
Hold on, so a SNES mini controller has the same connector as a Wii CC and can be interchangable with it? Does it mean that USB adapters for SNES mini will work for Classic Controller as well?
Precisely, they use the same tech.
There were Snes controllers for the Wii before the Snes mini, and NES too.
Enjoy your CRRREEEAAAAAAK on every input.
For me it's the Retro-bit 2.4GHz wireless Mega Drive pads
Sounds like you got an unofficial controller if it’s creaking
Are there even unofficial 8bitdo stuff?
Dunno, but I’ve never had any creaking
Saturn pad is alright but there's no diamond layout, you have to move your thumb if you want to press more than two buttons, this doesn't happen on the PS1 or SNES controller. You won't be playing THPS with this pad.
There really isn't anything similiar and with a pair of analogs, right?
And You may like the Gemini..
favorite fricking controllers
its great
i use the oem or retrobit wireless (2.4)
it was FAR better than i expected
i hope you homosexuals dont believe me so there are more cheap sidewinders for myself
Both of these are SEX.
May just be nostalgia but nothing makes me happier than the Dualshock.
Have you used pic related?
It’s definitely the best feeling DualShock
Yeah but it's been 15+ years, don't have one anymore sadly.
These are superb with top binned ALPS parts. If you don't have one, PS2 dualshock 2's are just as good.
Nah, ds2 feels like trash compared to these, they’re all mushy and these are nice and clicky
>PS2 dualshock 2's are just as good.
No they're not, shove your pressure sensitive face buttons up your ass.
Stop pulluting this thread with your cheap rubbish controllers.
If I had to settle on ONE controller, I'd pick the DualSense too. It's a jack of all trade but only a master of some, but it does it all more than good.
Not a retro question, I know, but how is it compared to the Dualshock 4?
Slightly bigger, more comfortable to hold. First time I held it while still having a PS4 myself it felt literally like sex for my hands. Buttons and sticks are similar, slightly "clicker" on the DualSense, but battery life is a lot better and vibration even in emulators feels much nicer.

tl;dr would never go back to DS4
Same, it's really nice. I use it for everything other than Sega games which I have a Saturn USB pad for.
The Dreamcast controller feels so good in the hands, uhh~
Any of the Xbox controllers honestly. I'll get hate for it but The Duke is a personal favorite. The sheer size fit well for my hands and it's one of the only controllers you can also use to beat someone to death with and go right back to playing a game.

Only reliability issue I had with them was the cable covering tearing apart. Controller itself was rock solid.

maybe it can defend against rage but not indifferent clumsiness.

My number 1...
...and a close runner-up.
this was always awkward to use
It wasn't, I grew up with this thing and I love it. Not the most consistent input method and definitely not the most versatile, but where it fits it's super fun.

Joke post I know, but what keyboard is that?
Am I the only one who unnironically likes playing retro games on my keyboard? I find it comfortable for some reason...
oh absolutely not...I think i started preferring a keyboard for anything that doesn't really "need" an analog stick for nearly 20 years now.
it's the workload shift from thumbs to all fingers. easier to do multiple fast inputs as well.

Correct take. Saturn is pure kino. I fricking love my Saturn so much
how do you go from this...
...to THIS piece of shit?
I still wish VMU type shit made a comeback. It was great when used properly.
This was an upgrade in 1998.
...and every Xbox controller ever made.
>upgrade in 1998.
inward-facing grips for maximum wrist discomfort, less buttons than most 5th gen consoles, slippery nylon ball under d-pad, shorter cable.
yeah, I'm thinking you're full of shit.

3D pad is ridiculous confortable, only better is the GC pad in terms of ergonomics.
Only thing that was better seems to be DC stick for movement. Don't know for sure though never had a 3D Saturn pad.
Noooo! It needs two analog sticks, more triggers and motion tilt censors.
lifetime sony guy, got a 360 controller to use with emulators/PC games and my god it fricking MELTS into your hands.
If only it had a better dpad.
Needed better sticks to. After too much COD I had two controllers get fricked from all the clicking of the sticks. They were worn down with drift problem. If those two things were improved that would be the best controller to use.
The bumbers also get shaved down after heavy usage. It's an easy fix thankfully.
it's never going to have a great dpad when it's in that position, it's a zerosum game between the left stick and the pad, 360 favored stick ergonomics, ds favored pad ergonomics.

It works great on my PC and on my mister. Its like a SNES controller for gorilla hands.
came here to post this it's basically my ideal SNES style controller.
Only complaint I have about it is the face button icons are painted on, I've used mine enough for them to wear off.
>face button icons are painted on
I agree the labels on mine are almost completely worn off. It still works great so I don't really mind.
I've always needed dpads to have separate buttons for the best precision possible. So I've stuck with Sony controllers all my life, somehow they're the only ones that ever did that.
There's a reason fighting game pros use the DS4 exclusively when it comes to using a pad instead of a stick
Or, you know, because tournaments use PS4.
Lol
Mate, you don’t know what you’re talking about, DS4 doesn’t use separate buttons, do you think the switch has a good “dpad”
How are the Saturn pads for the PC? Been interested in buying one to play some retro games with it.
How is Pokken? I was checking it out a bit earlier. It looks okayish. Not too great however.

The actual best controller
