I really can't believe people dealt with the synthesized ost

they are even people on this planet that prefer synthesized instead of orchestral, god have mercy on them

        >literally wanting soulless orchestral music instead of actual video game music

          Anonymous

likely bait, but I only hate synth music that's trying too hard to sound orchestrated but falls flat

        Anonymous

You know most games use some form of synth for the music right
Sugiyama being autistic about the rights to the compositions is one thing but I've never understood the b***hing about DQ in particular

          Anonymous

specifically the DQXI synth OST sounds atrocious, all of his other non recorded orchestral stuff is fantastic

            Anonymous

            >specifically the DQXI synth OST sounds atrocious
            Atrocious is an exaggeration imo
There was similar talk when the 3DS version of 8 came out too so it's not just 11, I don't get it. The only issue with 11's soundtrack is they didn't have enough unique area themes for such a long game and synth or orchestral doesn't change that.

              Anonymous

I'm not saying the compositions are bad, I really like them actually, the synth instrument choices and lack of modulation is what sounds bad.

I've not heard much of 8's 3DS ost though, only played it on PS2

                Anonymous

On 3DS it's the same music as the JP version of 8 on the PS2
Orchestral music and voice acting were only in the international release

                Anonymous

I knew about the voice acting but not about the different OST's, interesting!

                Anonymous

Yeah the orchestral suite wasn't released until later, by the time they were localizing it they decided it was worth slapping it in instead of the default music.
Same thing happened with the 7 remake on 3DS but some of the songs like the town theme don't really loop properly cause they were part of a medley on the album.

come up with cool rhythms for melodies
play some chords and some notes to those rhythms, and then figure out how to combine them

Mimic the music you like that you feel is cool
      Alter it a bit
      Alter it some more
      Alter it even more
Alter it so much it barely resembles the original inspiration

came in to this thread specifically to find the moron who would post this and say that this song is unironically amazing

Shut the frick up, This song is legit good
You listen to the first 3 seconds and are overwhelmed, it's standard time diatonic shit and theres simple motifs and ostinatos
It functions perfectly fine as a song and conveys the texture of a bustling warm city.
Give the song a proper listen and you'll internalise its structure

        Anonymous

        yes

        Anonymous

I don't know much about music theory but I agree with this statement. After the first 17 seconds of cacophony the melody and structure becomes much more coherent to me. The only thing that's really weird is some of the instrumentation choices, sounds like when I play an old PC game with the wrong MIDI driver and some of the instruments are swapped around but still at the right pitch.

          Anonymous

The thing is while its cacophonous and it feels like a mess of shit, the more you listen, you hear each instrument doing its own phrases so when you repeat listen you can start to pick out exactly what each instrument is doing during the start.
I think the walky jazzy bassline is what trips most people up with the percussive string flams
moron 3-second listeners can't deal with stuff that requires some actual exploration of the arrangement. They just want a song to hit hard on the downbeat and sometimes more ambient music with less strong downbeats are the point to de-accentuate the rhythm as something driving and more floaty

Probably would've been better with a few less BPM so things are feeling quite so rushed.

          Its a steady 116bpm
Its slow as frick if you click to the pulse
You're just losing your shit over the military flams
Listen to it a few times and really soak it in

is this popular in the west now?

        Anonymous

Nah it's still obscure in the west
It only shows up in bad vidya music threads Occassionally

It was obscure in Japan too until the last few years when Japanese zoomers rediscovered it and turned it into a meme just for how laughably bad the game is in all aspects.

      Anonymous

It does sound awful but I can see where the composer was trying. It feels like the soundfont was changed at some point and the rhythms are very slightly off at times like it's not being processed accurately. If those problems were fixed I think the songs would be servicable, if generic. Kind of like farts in the basement.
