I hate the artificial scarcity aspect but I like the idea of large print to demand physical releases.

If I ran the company the popular shit would get additional print runs annually.

Shantae's have decent print runs or open preorders, it's just Shantae in itself has become collector bait due to the OG Gameboy one being the most valuable mass printed game on the system combined with the coomer factor and brown bellies. It's kind of like how Pokemon games were printed in huge margins and some of the highest selling titles in history but command some of the highest collector prices.

                Anonymous

Not him, but if you pay attention you can easily tell that Wayforward and Limited Run have some kind of under the table contract. They don't DIRECTLY benefit from second hand sales, but Limited Run DOES profit from scalpers buying up overpriced special editions to flip, and WF probably gets some kind of kickback out of it, publicity or otherwise, in order to keep them from going somewhere else.

Remember that WF had multiple, non-LR publishers publish SatPC on the the 3DS physically, and then XSEED for HGH, but ever since LR got their hands on them they quit going to other publishers, save for Arc System Works for the Asian physical copies of Seven Sirens and MSF Collection. Most likely due to Limited Run not having much presence in that market so they (LR) don't really care as their consumer base probably doesn't know what Playasia is.

                >their consumer base probably doesn't know what Playasia is.
It’s worse than that, look up the #SwitchCorps collectorgays and they’ll outright say Asian English releases are official bootlegs because it undermines their LRG physical copies. It’s the dumbest shit. Besides usually the Asian releases are more up to date on cart.

I never intend to sell my personal collection, so I don't care about its "value", but it's impossible to pick up old games without breaking the bank these days. I miss the days when yard sale pricing was the norm. Now everyone and their grandma sells everything for 150% of MSRP minimum, even if it's shovelware trash. Forget about the actual quality games. Hopefully the "market" tanks.

    >Games you'll never hope to own physically.
Let me think, all of them? I legitimately cannot name a single game I would want to own physically. I guess if arcade cabinets count as games I might want a few of those, a 1 man tate candy cab and maybe a couple of light gun titles wouldn't be too bad. For everything else? There's emulation.

      Anonymous

I can understand, and somewhat agree with your mindset.
emulation makes all game easily available, but I grew up when game were physical and you actually owned the games you bought.
Am I silly for thinking this? Maybe, but physical games have a charm digital games will never have.

        Anonymous

I'll never understand the "charm" of having to hunt through a drawer or shelf for a case only to find the game isn't in it because you put it back somewhere else last time. Meanwhile I can boot up a digital version in the time it takes to type the first 3 characters of the name.

The only part of physical games I like is the manuals. But that's not enough to bother having a collection of them.

          >having to hunt through a drawer or shelf for a case only to find the game isn't in it because you put it back somewhere else last time
That sounds like a you problem. I keep everything nice and organized on my bookshelf, and when I'm not playing the game, it goes back in it's case.

            Anonymous

You've never taken a game out to play it, opened the console, and found another game inside that you forgot to put away? Sometimes you don't want to go looking for the case for it, sometimes you just put it in the case of the game you're about to play instead.

Even if you don't ever misplace a game, you still have to look for them. You still have to put the case back in the same place after you're done so you can find it next time. It's just added hassle, not to mention how shit CD based media is.

                Anonymous

The CD itself might be fine, the disc drive? That's another matter. Last time I played my PS1 the disc skipped and the music just stopped playing in Time Crisis. Never used it since, and I never will again. Just a dogshit fricking medium, I'm glad it's dead.

Even if I keep all my lasers in tip top condition, the actual state of CD media is bad. Slow loading times, loud drives. It made sense back when flash media wasn't capable of storing X amount of data. It's worthless in the modern day, which is why all my consoles have ODEs and I run all my games off SD cards.

No loser, all of my games are on a shelf organized alphabetically by series name. It takes .2 seconds to find the right case and put the game in it. If it isn't in the console it's in the case on the self. Do the tiny bit of work now to save large amounts of work later.

That's great but you don't need a physical copy. If you really have an attachment complex and need something to call your own you can buy it from gog for $20 and put the exe on a flashdrive. You'll be okay without a big box on your shelf you'll never touch, I promise.

Yeah yeah, I could emulate it if I really wanted to play it but it still makes me mad that I can't just walk into a local game shop and get a copy of a 20 year old game for $15-20 anymore.

We didn't know how good we had it. Just a few years ago it was like this, you could walk into a gamestop / eb games / local retro store and get old games for <$20 a piece.

Even fricking GBA games are now selling for like $50 minimum for most of the popular titles, and really popular games like Metroid fusion for example are $70+.

Yeah, this is all too solved by getting an EZ flash and just loading up every game ever made onto it, but still.... it just sucks that there's so much fricking collector buttholes these days buying up everything.

You know what puzzles me, I know I have a few games that go over 100 bucks but I would never understand why people would ever buy them at that price unless its for reselling them later on. A lot of them are pretty shitty or fricking short, it just sucks that there is this mentality of owning shit and the scalpers taking advantage of the companies sitting on a lot of these games that could be released easily at least on PSN/eShop/Steam/Xbox Live (I know pirating is an option but many don't seem to go for it)

The only people buying games are buying them just for the sake of sitting them on a shelf and pretending like they've played them.
You see so many of these types of people, for example the morons that have to own every single physical switch game along with stupid ass limited run editions and shit. All to just sit on a shelf so they can brag about their collection, while never actually playing any of the games because no one alive has the free time to play 1000 fricking switch games to completion, even if they were a turbo-NEET like I am, there's no one with the free time to play all of these games they collect, and yet they do it just to have a bunch of bullshit on a shelf. God it pisses me off.

To me, a games collection should only exist of games you actually like / have played. It's something that grows over time, and yeah maybe sometimes you go back and buy some older games you didn't play in order to play them on the original hardware, that's what I do from time to time and it pisses me off how expensive the used game market has become because people like me are getting priced out of some classic games.

Isn't the entire fricking point of taking pride in a video game collection is that it boils down to how it reflects your personal taste i.e. quality over quantity? Is this what a midlife crisis does to a motherfricker? There's a monumental line in the sand no, an all-consuming cavernous void, between collecting your typical things like cards, figurines, coins, comics, and the like but what fulfillment comes with owning a fricking storage unit of shovelware such as that Barbie game shown in the first minute?

It reminds me of the craze of gamerscore during the Xbox 360 era. You had guys that were literally buying barbie horse games just to get 1000 gamerscore.
I mean at least those guys were actually playing the games in their collection, as bad as those games were, they were getting played lol

A highly personalized collection will always be better than some idiot buying everything for the sake of buying everything.

I didn't even consider myself a collector until very recently, I just bought physical copies of games because I lived close to a place that sold them cheaply and at the time flashcarts were moronic expensive (over $250 minimum)
I guess after a while I realized "Well if I have nearly 300 games, obsess to keep them in good condition with things like box protectors, have multiple collectors guides, and buy collectors editions somewhat frequently I'm probably a collector"
I really don't like collector buttholes that just buy for the sake of putting it on the shelf or worse buy it for the sake of price speculation.

what I find funny about pokemon is how a lot of the early gens are surprisingly cheap. Like RBY and GS aren't bad, and RS are still kind of reasonable, but then you look at like platinum and it's fricking 300$

I’m guessing gens 1 & 2 are still relatively cheap is because you can’t forward transfer to Gen 3 and up from the original carts. But if that guy that’s making the GB to GBA link cable converter thing that makes trades possible between gens 2 and 3 mass produces them then prices may go up more.

Pirates Curse is a real kick in the nuts because that was the only Shantae title on switch they released under their old system of preordering where they made 5,000 copies and if you wanted it you had to spam cart refresh and hope you got a copy in the ten second frenzy.
Every other Shantae game they put out was under the much more reasonable open-preorder system they have currently. And if that isn't enough those frickers REALLY like to have Shantae, they're constantly releasing something Shantae related just to remind you of that one games existence.

I found a vinyl record while thrifting recently that is worth almost $500 because of its rarity. It got me thinking about the whole retro coomlector bubble. at least with this record I can sort of understand why someone would pay that since it cant be replicated, but these "rare" retro games people pay out the ass for can easily be pirated, even if you want to play on original hardware and they will run exactly the same way. I agree that it's bizarre to be a literal shelf collector who fetishizes collecting physical manifestations of video games to the detriment of actually playing and enjoying them. Some people really are like that, though. On the other hand, having a nice, curated collection that is an eclectic mix of essential classics and personal picks of games you've actually played is just proof that you're serious about your hobby and have good taste. It's not that long ago when physical copies were more or less mandatory even if you pirated with burnt disks, and the legacy of that matters to a lot of boomers including myself. I don't by any means need a physical copy to actually play and enjoy a game but I love buying them anyway as long as they're not obscenely expensive.

So the fact that the XC3's LE sold out instantly and that people are scalping it and dumbasses are buying scalped copies really opens my eyes on the absolute moronation of nintendo fanboys.

It is absolutely fricking tiring how many "nerdy" collectibles have shot up in value due to youtubers, scalpers, and the like. These fricks will see one post selling for 500 dollars and then the next day there's 20 pages of said item selling for 500. Nevermind the fact that that original 500 dollar item has been sitting there untouched for months— no! If one post says it's worth 500, ALL are worth 500! No one who actually wants to buy can afford it, and the only people who will actually pay that price are morons who have more money than what they know what do do with, or speculators. Actual fricking clown shit.

I fricking hate capitalism so much.
Everything is an investment, the only value anything has is for the sake of obtaining more value while the ignorant masses gobble up whatever corporations shit on their plate.
Want a house to live in? FRICK NO that shit is for buying up to resell for profit later!
Want a nice car to drive? FRICK YOU why are you buying something that loses its value as soon as it leaves the lot?!
Want to make a digital currency for the common person to utilize without going through israeli banks? FRICK YOU that bitcoin is just a fricking investment to create more value out of thin air!
Literally everything is just an investment to gamble with under this moronic system.

I work in a charity shop in Bongland, every now and then a mother will come in and dump her son's collection of old vidya games without much of a second thought. Probably didn't even let the poor guy know.
Usually it's generic PS3 games only worth a few bucks or sports games from 2011 that not a soul will ever buy, but now and then we get some real gems. I feel bad for the guys who had it given away.

    >get a collection of weeb/Japanese games for the PS3/4
    >haven't even heard of most of them
    >going for £50-100 on ebay each
    >some cool and rare shit is in there too, not just weeb stuff. Like a perfect condition, limited edition version of Shadow of the Colossus for PS2
    >sometimes a box full of old games will only be worth like ~£20 to us, in this case we made like £500
I'm the only one there who knows anything about games, I think before me they would just put everything out for the usual £2-£5 each.

Also this is your friendly reminder to check your local charity shop, if they're run by little old ladies and not teenage volunteers, sometimes you can find some massively under-priced games.
90% of our customers are also old ladies and women, so these games can sit there for weeks.

    >My Gamecube controller broke
    >Only had the one
    >Go out on Amazon, Ebay and local retro sites to find a replacement
    >All of them sell Gamecube controllers for atleast 60 bucks per unit, more if they are not in bad shape
    >Try to find the Re-released ones that Nintendo made for Smash 4 and Ultimate
    >They somehow cost upwards of 85 bucks
    >Look up chink alternatives
    >20-25 bucks, not bad
    >Every single one of them have nothing but 2 star or worse ratings as people verbally shit on them in the comments for their worse than shit quality
    >Decide to buy one anyway since it's better than nothing I guess
    >It arrives non functional

Holy fricking shit, I just want to play my Gamecube for another year before I give it a permanent home in my storage unit, I can sort of understand that these controllers are expensive since they are in such limited supply but how not a single one of those bugfrickers in chinkland have been able to make even ONE decent replica of the GC controllers are fricking astonishing. Wavebirds are even more expensive, the cheapest ones I can find from even just passibly reputable sources that won't take 6 fricking months to get to me costs atleast 105 bucks

      Anonymous

Good third party controllers are just hard to come by in general. When you're a kid and too shit at games to understand the difference, you don't care. But as an adult you can feel when it's fricking wrong. Case in point I tried to cheap out with a no-name chink made Gamecube controller some years ago and I immediately regretted it. Thankfully that was when the first wave of smash branded Gamecube controllers were recent, so I went down to Gamestop and got one. Funny story, it was actually a basically unused one that got returned because the last owner couldn't make it work. The clerk tried to warn me that those controllers were unusable on Wiis, but it was perfectly good in the end. So I got mine at a discount because it was open box. Still have it to this day, and the moment anything breaks on it I'm just going to do self repair.

        Anonymous

        >do self repair.
I'd have to replace the cable and cap since my mothers dog chewed the plug and a bit of the cable to pieces when she was visiting. Finding just replacment parts is fricking impossible where I live unless I chance it and buy atleast 20 cables and plugs from some random chink on Aliexpress since they refuse to make them unless I order them in bulk

          Anonymous

Ouch, that is a bit more complicated. Assuming you can soldier, have you tried ebay? A cursory search for replacement cables has shown listings for about 7 bucks a pop.

            Anonymous

I did, but none of the ones I found shipped to where I live (I live in a small town in the middle of nowhere in Europe) and many of them refuse to send to a PO box for some fricking reason.

All is good now though, I managed to find a retro store in my country that sold GC "extension" cables for 4 bucks a piece that should work just fine as a cable replacement even though I lose almost half of the original lenght of the cable. Now I just hope that my soldering skills aren't so shit that I break the logic board on the controller itself as I solder the new cable onto it

              Anonymous

Well that kind of stinks but I also understand it because international shipping prices in burgerland are ridiculous. Old-ish example from the mid 2010s but still
              >could get a package shipped from Japan to the US in three fricking days for less than $30
              >untracked snail mail for the exact same package back to Japan was close to $70
Considering our postal service is allegedly hemorrhaging money I don't know how Japan does it but god bless them for it.

There are homebrew solutions for the GBA player that work better, though you'll still be stuck paying a premium if you don't already have the action replay required to make it all work.

        >Don't worry, you'll only have to pay out of the ass twice instead of once!
I don't understand, how can people lose the fricking GBA disc when it came with the hardware and it refused to work without it from day one?
It would be like if you bought a PC that could only connect to monitors using a proprietary cable and then losing the fricking cable

          Anonymous

The average video game consumer is irresponsible as hell with their games and won't even keep their discs in their cases half the time. For the average joe the GBA player was a novelty that they used for a little bit and then never touched again, at which point they forget about the disc and lose it somewhere along the way.

          Yes, it's bullshit.

    >find my Gamecube with the disc still in it. No sign of the box.
    >"Yeah sorry, I'll look for it later Im just so busy"

1 year later and he still hasn't looked at all. Had I known at the time that the price of gamecube games had gone nuts I would of never lent it to him. I also realized my Harvest Moon: Magical Melody is not in its case, so Im praying its in the missing Skies of Arcadia case.

I sell a lot on eBay and I can tell you that these are all overpriced by at least $100. Always look at the sold listings instead. On buy it now listings, watchers are just people who decided not to buy your item. You could have 100 watchers on it and it still ain't selling until you lower the price.

Extremely fricking tempted to get it, since I don't think it would be too difficult to install a larger memory hard-drive or whatever.

      Anonymous

      >since I don't think it would be too difficult to install a larger memory hard-drive or whatever.

It's literally just a hatch on the side of the console that you pop open with a screw driver and you can dump in a new 2.5'' drive. The only annoying part of replacing a PS3's hard drive is the fact that the backup system is absolutely godawful, but if it's a new PS3 with nothing installed that you want to keep that doesn't matter.

The one thing that sucks about PS3's though is the system is too slow to take advantage of SSDs if I remember right. You cut out the spin up time but things wont load as fast as they could.

      Anonymous

Frick yeah, go for it, you get actual PS2 compatibility, permanent custom firmware and more i/o. Make sure you clean it out and apply fresh thermal paste, it's pretty hot. You might have to replace the capacitors near the CPU and GPU at some point, although mine works fine since 2008.

      Anonymous

If it's cheap then go for it and see. But there's a real risk of not actually enjoying playing any games on it, because it might sound like a vacuum cleaner/jet engine while running. Also the upscaling is not good for emulated PS/2 games, and will either look like blurry pixels, or completely smoothed over. They're much better emulated on PC.

I'd get one of the newer models with the better chips that generate less heat, and although it is possible to emulate older PS titles on those as well with some trouble, again I don't really recommend it.
