This is a really long fricking story
Years ago, around 2011 a company called Ocean Marketing was creating something called the "Avengers Hand Controller" (or something like that). It was a modified xbox controller designed for people with low dexterity ie arthritis. The guy heading the operation had obviously had some problems getting it into production and getting the controllers made. There was many delays with the release date continually getting pushed back. Eventually an angry customer sent an agressive email to the main guy behind the product, instead of getting a corporate response back the lead guy blew up on the customer. The customer then CC'ed Tycho from Penny Arcade into the email chain. The fight then devolved into an argument between Tycho and head guy. Tycho then publishes all the emails on Penny Arcade calling him a bully. At this point the entire internet feels vindicated in destroying the guys life and the full force of the internet comes down and just crushes the guys life to shit. People dox him, they show up at his house and smash his windows, threaten his kids, harass his kids school, send him death threats all that stuff. His marriage breaks down and loses his mortgage. All the while Tycho is posting these gloaming messages about how he got what was coming to him (if you ever see a panel of Tycho looking like the Grinch, it comes from this drama)

It's incredible how even with how much shit people are willing to eat these days, the always online console was the deal breaker to the point PS4 took over the entire gen. It was never even anything PlayStation did particularly right, it's just Xbox shit the bed so catastrophically hard they paid for it for 8 years.
The crazy thing is that Microsoft wanted to kill used games with that move. And then managed to start doing that with Game Pass and the Series S instead and people are applauding them for it now. Years ago, around 2011 a company called Ocean Marketing was creating something called the "Avengers Hand Controller" (or something like that). It was a modified xbox controller designed for people with low dexterity ie arthritis. The guy heading the operation had obviously had some problems getting it into production and getting the controllers made. There was many delays with the release date continually getting pushed back. Eventually an angry customer sent an agressive email to the main guy behind the product, instead of getting a corporate response back the lead guy blew up on the customer. The customer then CC'ed Tycho from Penny Arcade into the email chain. The fight then devolved into an argument between Tycho and head guy. Tycho then publishes all the emails on Penny Arcade calling him a bully. At this point the entire internet feels vindicated in destroying the guys life and the full force of the internet comes down and just crushes the guys life to shit. People dox him, they show up at his house and smash his windows, threaten his kids, harass his kids school, send him death threats all that stuff. His marriage breaks down and loses his mortgage. All the while Tycho is posting these gloaming messages about how he got what was coming to him (if you ever see a panel of Tycho looking like the Grinch, it comes from this drama)
