its honestly just a hold over from an older era of fan requests. Geno is a cool character and from a good game. I remember people wanting him for melee. He just sort of stuck around but he was more relevant back then, he sort of faded away and banjo remained memorable and ridley and k.rool were in newer games
I think it is a similar situation as Banjo where he was a "Nintendo Character" that someone wanted in Smash 64 since SMRPG was a pretty late SNES game (1996 to Smash 64s 1999) and then ages of Galvanization and renewed hope as road blocks (Read: Square Enix frickery, there is a reason why the Geno cameo got removed in the Superstar Saga remake (RIP Alphadream)) got "Resolved".
