I've never played SC2 but I've followed it since development, and watched countless tourneys. I would say it's suffering from the same problems their other games are. I feel like it was the last decent thing Blizzard did, but now they are struggling to maintain it.
Like, the same way they cannot balance between Alliance and Horde and just ignore the massive imbalances, Zerg is pretty much obviously the strongest in SC2 (judging by tournament results over the last several years), and their latest patch was clearly very zerg favored, and everyone is doing mental gymnastics to say it wasn't.

I was going to add in a caveat. Yes, you should aim to balance your game across all skill levels, that would make for a great game. You should not ignore if a unit really upsets the balance at a certain skill level.
But at the same time, your most competitive levels are the clearest demonstration of balance, since so many other factors come into play at any level, this at least restricts many other factors. To ignore the fact one of your races is winning like 80%+ of tournaments, and another one is basically at 0.... Sure, I can see why protoss is much easier at lower levels, and why they may be more popular because cannon rushes are fun, etc.
None of that changes the fact that protoss almost never wins at a tournament level (and perhaps that Zest win WAS rigged right before he goes into the military...)
