Also, the game sold fairly in line with what I imagine expectations would be. Franchise titles tend to do less than their immediate predecessors with exceptions made for exceptional times (see major revivals like RE7 and RE2, DMCV).
Bayonetta 3's sales were fairly in line with the overall trends of the series.

No, Bayo 1 original release did 1M in PS3/360, the re-release did other 1M. Bayo3 hit over 1M in less than a year and in just one console.

The point is that every Bayo game always did near the same amount (1M) on original release, so 1M is more than OK for keep the series going. Bayo budget was never ultra-expensive since its on switch is still less expensive than do it for PS5 or XboX

In multiverse stories, parallel versions of a character are literally just different people with a shared name. The protagonist of Bayo 3 is a new woman whom we've never controlled before. Not the Bayonetta who was playable in both 1 and 2.
