Sonic 2 sucks. Yeah sure they cut the Acts from 3 to 2 but the games still every bit as long and draining as Sonic 1 because there's so many fricking filler levels. Frick Hilltop. Frick Mystic Cave. Hell, frick Emerald Hills derivative vanilla ass self.
The thing is, it's not even a bad platformer but nobody cared because we were all so assblasted by the removal of the sim mode. Took a unique game and turned it generic. Still don't know what the frick they were thinking
I'm playing Origins right now and my basic takeaway is that 1 really isn't that good, 2 is overall a massive improvement but the quality completely nosedives once you reach Oil Ocean and never recovers (and the special stages are still shit even with proper 3D and infinite continues I don't know why everyone likes the halfpipes so much) and 3's just a great game all around. and CD's still my favorite despite being more of a half-step between 1 and 2 in a lot of ways, I dunno something about it just hits right for me.
I bought SEGA AGES Sonic 1 a few years ago and found it a lot more enjoyable than Sonic 2. Level design catered to my platforming sensibilities than the latter.
