>i'm like 90% sure the only people who believe this think so because of the anime
The SM games are incredibly blatantly inspired by Yokai Watch, and Rotomdex is a ridiculously transparent Whisper clone. It's only dumb westerners that don't realize just HOW big Yokai Watch was in Japan at the time that believe otherwise. It was almost Pokemania-tier, and the first time a franchise had seriously challenged Pokemon.
Go play Yo-kai Watch, they literally lifted everything from the visual style to the controls to the cutscene pacing to gimmicks like the photo mode directly from it.
Granted, it's not like Yo-kai Watch wasn't inspired by Pokemon in the first place, but compare SM first to XY and then to YW, it's uncanny how similar it is. It's like they were still having trouble with 3D environments in XY so just copied YW.
Digimon was never meant to be a competitor to Pokemon, it was marketed as "Tamagotchi for boys". The entire "Pokemon VS Digimon" shit was invented by the west because they both end in mon.
The poor reception of BW at the time condemned the series to never try something so risky and always stay in a comfort zone.
Also I'm not going to defend those idiots, not bringing old pokemon and trusting that old players would immediately love their Kanto 2.0 was quite naive (They fixed it in BW2 but it was too late the damage had already been done) and also creating a foreign region without taking the time to learn its idiosyncrasy, its iconography, its culture, its roots, its customs to capture it in the game, it was a stupid idea, that is why it seems more like your typical Japanese rpg world instead of having a truly American essence (It's incredible that Mother, a Nes game, knew better how to capture this)
>The poor reception of BW at the time condemned the series to never try something so risky and always stay in a comfort zone.
That's moronic, BW used the same exact formula as every other Pokemon game up to that point and there were critical reviews calling the games stale. They actually did finally do some innovating in Sun and Moon.
>do some innovating in Sun and Moon.
Trials were even more mind numbing than gym puzzles.
Just because the totem bosses at the end were good doesn't mean everything else wasn't fricking shit and a downgrade from what was present before.
>I didn't like the result
Doesn't matter. The series was receiving criticisms for being too repetitive back during Gen 5. Absolute nobody was claiming that it changed too much and that the series needed to be more safe, that's some insane revisionism.
>I didn't like the result
Yep, and I'm part of the majority for that sentiment. Nobody when praising Gen 7 is bringing up the actual process of earning the right to face the boss totems.
risky? Bw didnt add any kind of gameplay feature or scheme change apart from the very final and even then its a blue 3.0.
Gen 6, 7, 8 and 9 were the ones that did things different. But your downie system wouldnt understand. *literally anything regardless from the nonsense it can make or the context (bw did it and u didnt and now scared to dit:)*down syndrome golem noises spawned from hell*"
Black person and paletroony the so ameriyan fretdom brave and non scared to catch a quintuple strain of AIDS+:(. so sad that japanese didnt like us amerishart trannies and our trashbags of toxic waste infected tampons
>poor reception
Selling a half million less than the next highest game still translates to a gorillion dollars, this narrative that Gen 5 flopped is just shartcord piss. Pokemon is literally incapable of failure because it commands a legion of mindless brand Black person slaves.
>condemned the series to never try something so risky and always stay in a comfort zone
BW was not risky in the slightest, fricking SM, Lets Go, PLA and SV are more risky
I'm tired of morons claiming BW was somehow some big attempt to make something different. All Masuda knew how to make were RBG clones, and BW is just another RBG clone but with more dialog.
Gamefreak themselves are mindbroken from being forced to work on pokemon at all, but it would be financially moronic not to. They've publicly said they want to work on other things but all their other games recently have been flops (and also not very good).
oh no those poor billionaires having to make one of the most fun serieses to make without even having to build advanced assets or do the technical work themselves. poor guys
But i find it hilarious that Ken sugimori's artist block period still generated masterpieces like megaevolutions and xerneas and yvetal lol
They don't even try, not only because they simply don't care to, but because it will sell well regardless since Pokemon and Nintendo shit in general sells on brand loyalty alone
The concept I think is good. RPG towns are small and often feel like they have a single gimmick to make them different from the rest. Making an RPG in a big town with lots of different unique districts, like real towns have could work. It could make this single setting feel very fleshed out and realistic in a good way. Game Freak are not the people to make that game.
I don't think they're trying to get away from Pokémon. Everyone who works at GameFreak knows the company is going to be tied to the series forever and it's all they're ever going to be known for. Their side projects exist purely to alleviate burnout. They don't expect any of them to be received well. They don't expect any of them to sell well. Nothing they ever do will ever come anywhere close to Pokémon. They're just tossing what effectively amounts to a few cents to fund those doomed-to-failure games so they can cycle employees instead of having everyone constantly working on a Pokémon game.
>They don't expect any of them to be received well. >They don't expect any of them to sell well.
They brought in the most experienced and capable team for that mediocre game, while leaving the development of the Pokemon game of that generation to the newbies, obviously they had their hopes in that game. In fact, it is suspected that the low quality of the new Pokemon games was due to this.
seriously. we are cursed with forever having a fricking random rotom in our pokedex because game freak is so insecure about this stupid franchise. it's honestly really cringy
The fat sweaty pig boss in the Yokai Watch games mind broke me. Frick Grumpig is close because of his hypno powers, sure. But that YokaiWatch pig boss is god tier sexy
Searching anime clips turned out way harder than I thought
His name is “sproink” and there’s a clip “out of context” when someone yelled banana, I believe his reaction will ruin you for life that’s why I said watch it at your own risk

>GF gets accused of being lazy >They make an RPG where the gimmick is there's only one fricking town
I still want to know who greenlit that shit.
At first I thought the town was going to be filled with details like unique npc having proper life schedule but you travel town though a sort of chessboard
Can't blame the West when being "excessively foreign" has never really worked for mass appeal. It would be like making a series all about burgers and guns and school shootings and wondering why the Japanese don't care for it.
>Can't blame the West when being "excessively foreign" has never really worked for mass appeal.
Westerns are more popular in Europe than they are in America despite the entire concept being the romanticizing of America's past.
It was Americanized hard from hell to back which mean it got rid of its appeal. But I don't think kids care about something not being American. I think the biggest problem that no one talks about is that YKW was aired on Disney XD. A cable channel that not everyone owns, not Fox or CN which everyone had access to and aired Pokemon, Digimon, and Yugioh and a bunch of other cartoons that people still talk about like Teen Titans and shit. YKW sold slowly in Japan but the anime gave it exposure and is what launched the game into its own mania. You can't get that if your parents didn't pay for XD. This is before we even mention L5's milking campaign
Short answer: Level 5 was full of morons.
Quick rundown for why: >they took forfrickingever to localize each game possible. Example YW3 was released in Japan around 2016, take a guess when it was localized here? Fricking 2019 >they try way too hard to overstretch the games releases: 3 games for YW2 in the same year, 3 games for YW3 in the same year, 2 games for Blasters, 2 games for Blasters 2 and so on >the ONLY smart move that L5 western ever done that they ever did was to say NO to all YW3 versions and only worked on one version >they were moronic in the toys department too, remember those little watches? they were neat. Unfortunately, L5 for some went greedy mode and made each new watch completely incompatible with the old one. Needless to say parents were extremely pissed >they stated they are working on localizing YW4 ........... SUPRISE MOTHERFRICKER GET COOOFED, they ceased to function in the west afterwards "Until further notice" >even if you looked into their other IPs, fans have lost faith >Professor Layton: the mastermind has died in 2016 and they shot themselves in the dick by releasing that shitty sequel >Fantasy Life: pretty comfy game, then they made a major frick up in if you bought the DLC you cannot play with those who did not until you delete it >they wanted to extend even more to anime and manga
No wonder their asses got ripped flat, they stretched themselves way too thin
They announced their return early this year with 3 new games and there is nothing new about YW yet, but given what I listed above they need more years to recover
>Fantasy Life
Don't forget the two sins they did >announce a sequel >Sequel details it later to reveal it as a mobile game >Release it on Japan only for 3 years before shutting it down >Have the gall to finally release the game overseas right when the game shuts down in Japan >Kill the overseas servers 6 months later
It's mostly incompetence. Yo-kai watch showed it off, but fantasy life confirmed it.
The fact that they still make so much money after all the shit they released. Now it's just them testing with how much they can get away with.
The franchise was sustainable with purely TCG sales after Gen 4, mainline sells less than TCG starting with Gen 5.
Did they freak out about digimon too?
Why would they? Digimon happened at the peak of Pokemania.
i'm like 90% sure the only people who believe this think so because of the anime
no
i would wager that not even one person who works at game freak has ever even heard of this
>i'm like 90% sure the only people who believe this think so because of the anime

z-move dances are ripped right out of yokai watch

I don't get it
smartphones were Masuda's excuse for not having the Battle Frontier in ORAS
I'd say demos but they didn't learn their lesson after ORAS lmao

And weren’t there people who worked on Mother who also worked on Pokémon?
>The poor reception of BW
Is purely a western thing, if even that. BW was a huge success in Japan.
Rpg's in japan is their equivalent of Black folk and wageslaves buying a new iphone every year (or fifa idk)
>The poor reception of BW at the time condemned the series to never try something so risky and always stay in a comfort zone.

Say it, what things did gen 6 differently than gen 1-5?
Gen 7 was the gen that broke away from the classic formula completely. Gen 6 had megas and 3d that's it oh and fairy
what did bw do that's so different? make you use only ugly pokemon? unlock a third ability slot? lol
The thing with B&W was it was an attempt to create rotating rosters of disposable Pokemon.
>poor reception

Remember when they tried to get out of Pokemon's shadow and failed pathetically?
This proves that they are insecure as frick, if only Level5 weren’t ran by bunch of morons
>posted only one example
They made 10 games minimum in the past decades and they all failed without exception

Thanks boo
Yokai watch had some seriously top tier waifu designs and I'll never forgive the west for letting it die
This. And more cuties are still being released to this day, trapped in gacha hell because there's no active console game getting updates now.
Gacha-hell is definitely a fate worse than death for these games
tummy blowjob

It does for me, but I just like lewding cute monsters girls and ghost girls in general.
no shit
Yokai Watch is irrelevant now
but it wasn’t during Gen 7
DQ
Does DQ have cute monster girls?
Dats cute.
Also how the frick is this thread still around?

>2014: ORAS threads and Fug

People didn’t realize the YW question until much later
Okay but what about when they finally did
