Is it really that unpopular? I personally prefer NEO more but I’ve seen love for both.
I’ve seen some people claim that the story of the original and development for the cast is tighter and while I can definitely see the former, I can’t agree with the latter. The Wicked Twisters to me felt more engaging compared to Neku and his crew, even though I still liked the former.
The OG TWEWY gang were alright to me at best. Neku and Beat were great and easily have the best relationship development. Shiki’s arc feels rushed as hell and she gets put away to the sidelines until the end of the game. Joshua’s overhyped as hell and his relationship with Neku isn’t explored as much as I would like. Rhyme’s a literal who in terms of in-depth characterization though she’s cute. The Wicked Twisters to me have more endearing banter and surprisingly in-depth characterization and writing.
Joshua’s legitimately overrated as a character but I still like Shiki well enough. Definitely agree on Rhyme, though.
OG TWEWY has the tighter story with more memorable npcs and a more expansive post-game. NEO has the stronger character relationships and character writing with more in-depth gameplay and customization. That’s just the way I see it.
It's not unpopular, I've seen it a lot. I don't understand it though, especially the people who say Neo's gameplay is a masterpiece
The first game was much more focused. Nagi and Fret get little time in the spotlight whereas all three of the partners in the first game get plenty of scenes.
>whereas all three of the partners in the first game get plenty of scenes.
And yet Joshua and Shiki’s relationships with Neku still feel rushed as hell.
I think it’s because, with the OG, the character dynamics are either all explicitly told to you to the point where you can barely get anything more out of it (Neku and all his partners, Uzuki and Kariya) there’s just no foundation to build off at all. The only exceptions to this I feel is the whole thing with Joshua, Kitaniji, Hanekoma, and Sho. When you replay the OG, you just kind of get what you get and while that’s all fine and good, there’s not much to explore in that area. NEO’s character relationships felt more fascinating to explore in my opinion.
That’s pretty disingenuous, anon. Fret and Nagi get plenty of good scenes with the other characters and each other as well as segments highlighting their core characters.
I think a weakness in the partner structure of the original is that while it led to quicker pacing and showed off the stakes of the plot quite nicely, certain character arcs/relationships felt rushed to me. Shiki is pretty much sidelined after her arc and is only relevant as Neku’s motivation and Entry Fee, and her relationship with Neku feels rushed as hell, which is kind of a problem considering how he started off trying to kill her, and Joshua’s supposed friendship with Neku isn’t really as fleshed out as I would like. The majority of their week together just has Joshua purposely pissing off Neku just to see if he actually changed and Neku rebuking him because of Shiki’s and Mr. H’s influence on him. Then Joshua “sacrifices” himself for Neku’s sake and the game plays on Neku’s survivor’s guilt to have you feel something for Josh, but it didn’t really work for me, especially with how many red flags Joshua was showing.
If I had the ability to rewrite week 2, I would add subtle moments interspersed throughout it to show a side of Joshua that the audience could pick up on that shows that he values people growing into better selves then I'd add more scenes showing Neku and Joshua being more like-minded to provide a subtle but palpable sense of closeness forming between the two of them. A bit more back and forth between the two would have definitely made their dynamic feel more balanced and on a whole, sell the fact that their relationship was growing into something one could see as a meaningful partnership, like when they started playing Tin Pin at the beginning of one day to settle on what they should do for the day and Joshua actually gets annoyed, which was genuinely great to see.
I like the first game better because I do think the story is better and the characters stronger and more impactful. But Neo's gameplay IS a masterpiece, it has arguably one of the best action rpg systems ever made
>the characters stronger and more impactful.
Post why because the original cast was just alright to me.
The original is overhyped garbage and I actually enjoyed this one so I’m inclined to agree.
I have never played either. What would you compare them to
>What would you compare them to
Kingdom Hearts but as a deck builder, maybe? It's such a unique system that finding a good comparison is pretty hard.
Think Jet Set Radio but as highly stylized ARPGS with unique combat systems. The first game in particular takes every possible advantage of the DS hardware while the sequel uses more standardized controls but with more free-form customization.
Do you have to play the first to get the second?
Probably not but you’ll be rewarded much more for doing so.
Some aspects of the plot won't land as hard if you don't play the first, but you can get away with just playing NEO if the gameplay is more important. If you can play OG TWEWY on actual DS hardware, though, it's worth playing. The Switch port fricking sucks and its only redeeming factor is killing MPP. Don't let anyone in this thread gaslight you into thinking otherwise.
What is MPP bro
Mingle Pin Points. The original game had a pseudo-streetpass function where certain pins could only evolve if they had earned enough Mingle PP compared to other PP (Battle/Sleep) types. The only way to earn it without a second DS is to wait for the RNG UFO encounters added as a failsafe to ensure everyone could earn MPP no matter what.
I view them as equal. There are aspects I like more in the other and vice-versa.
The closest comparison would be Jet Set Radio but with its own twists on that. Honestly, there’s not a lot of games like these two.
>Highly-stylized with aesthetics that can be directly compared to Jet Set Radio
>mechanically unique ARPGs with fun takes on mob design such as making the mobs stronger through chaining together rounds for more drop rate
>surprisingly well-done character writing and development for the casts
>great music that covers a large variety of genres
>highly modular difficulty settings that rewards you even more for getting gud at the mechanics
>tfw Beat is the best boy in both
How can one party member be so based?
I like how he’s present throughout all weeks in both games.
Cooldown abilities spam
You’d get killed doing that, though.
yeah sorry, you have to move sometimes
Hope you enjoy getting mogged by wolves.
In terms of story I'd say it's a matter of preference but I can't fathom thinking OG's gameplay is better than NEO's. NEO blows it out of the fricking water. Blows every KH game out of the water, too.

Its not an unpopular opinion really. NEO is one of the rare instances the sequel is on par if not better than the original
I still prefer the original but NEO is a damn good sequel.
the og game plays like shit so that's a very low bar
>Well, well, well, if it isn’t my favorite sheeple, the Wicked Black folk? I sure hope you can spice up the game for us.
>that time Shiba started reciting Mein Kampf to demoralize the player teams
What did Raimi mean by this?
Reminder that Fret has the same birthday as Hitler. I’m not even joking, he actually does.
It was a different time
>Yes well done, Slytherin, well done, Slytherin
>HOWEVER
>As reward for gaining the most house points, I would like Slytherin house into my Chamber of Secrets and...
This isn't really an unpopular opinion. A lot of people thought the same thing during release when there were a bunch of threads.
Me too but thats because i suck ass at the original so thats not really a fair unbias opinion
I love every Capcom IP except for Monster Hunter. I don't know why but World and Rise felt like a chore playing through with most fans agreeing there aren't any bad entries.

The biggest sin of NEO TWENTY was trying to pander the Kingdom Hearts fanbase instead of their own.
The released platforms were also a mistake. Switch was smart, since the OG was a DS exclusive for some years, but they should have make it exclusive, even for a limited time there and then release on PC via Steam and then on PS4+Xbox, but Square-Enix loves to suck the Sony's dick.
Believe it or not, Nintendo's marketing is able to save a game's fate. But it seems they learned their lesson with Harvestella.
>The biggest sin of NEO TWENTY was trying to pander the Kingdom Hearts fanbase instead of their own.
What the frick did he mean by this?
>Ganker in a nutshell
OLD BAD NEW GOOD
What the hell are you on about? If anything, Ganker‘s the opposite.
Other way around bud.
Same, I don't think it's an unpopular opinion at all
The original had better antagonists, mystery, and the stakes felt higher. Better pay off too.
>better antagonists
I’d say the antagonists are equal. Sho, Uzuki, Kariya, and Kitaniji were great but Higashizawa and Konishi were lacking. Shiba, Motoi, and Susukichi legitimately have a lot of depth to them and Kubo is just fun.
Ehh, Shiba felt like an overconfident week boss from rather than a game conductor. There was no mystery or intrigue about him compared to Megumi.
Kitaniji to me felt weak as hell due to just how little we get to him throughout the game. His twist is cool but I was hardly invested in his character. Shiba felt more charismatic and I liked how his relationships fleshed out his character more.
>The reveal of her true nature in the final week turned her into one of ogs strong points
Except we see her constantly thinking to herself after Kitaniji walks off, which is a big hint that she’s definitely plotting something. Not much of a twist there.
I like Shiba better simply because his boss fights don’t suck ass like Megumi’s does.
Konishi was great. The reveal of her true nature in the final week turned her into one of ogs strong points
I also prefer how in the original, your reputation with the shopkeepers is more obvious as you rank them up. In Neo some of them still act rudely towards you if you don't buy anything at max level.
>mystery
Joshua’s identity is so hilariously telegraphed that it’s not even funny.
>those tedious time travel segments every moment
lol no, Nagi was fine tho.
>he says when “the countless wrongs of our days” exists
Bros, Nagi's birthday is coming up! What are you going to do for best girl?
I'll eat her smelly pussy.
you wont like my answer
BBBRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAP
I’m scared now
How the frick do i get into TWEWY, what is up the fricking controls. Do they expect me to focus on 2 screen at once
Pass the puck, bro
I liked the first one better cause I was 17 when I played it and I was 30 years old when this one came out. Plus I was kind of an emo kid back then too.
Simple as is.
Shame with what they did to Minamimoto.
He’s literally the same except more cooperative with others.
NTA. But that's the problem.
Literally how? He still wants to be the Composer, he’s still pretty selfish at his core but he’s learned to open up a little just a tiny, tiny bit.
Same. I played through the original TWEWY in preparation for NEO and while it’s a good game, I wasn’t exactly blown away by it. Its various mechanics felt unbalanced as hell and for a story so focused on character relationships, they feel pretty rushed with the exception of Beat and Neku because they’re the mainstays throughout the game. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed NEO overall for its increased focus on character dynamics and subtle detailing.
Daily reminder that Shoka is best girl
Was legitimately surprised by the depth of her character. They knocked it out of the park with her.
She’s one of the best Squeenix heroines to have come out in a long time.
>makes the goth catgirl the heroine just because he can
Nomura, I kneel
Kobayashi really outdid himself with Nagi's design on new year. I loved this look for her, she's so gorgeous
wasn't really a fan of what they did with Neku in NEO, having him disappear for 3 years with the A New Day stuff felt contrived
like he probably only spent a few weeks with his friends, feels kind of wrong for the message the game was trying to send
Everyone seems to feel the need to shit on the original when talking about the sequel so you're not alone.
I don’t think the original is bad, I just think it’s too overhyped for its own good.
I am ready to drain his mammaries down to the last drop of milk
TWEWY > NEO > Any TWEWY re-release
>I liked NEO TWEWY better than the original.
I genuinelly did too, which was completelly unexpected.
I love every singe character of the original TWEWY, but Neo actually builds relationships across all party members as opposed to just between the MC and whoever your partner is that week.
I definitelly understand liking the first one's story especially as it's more focussed; each week feels very distinct as you get a new partner and game organizer. But Neo instead builds up the characters' development throughout the game, making for some more satisfying arcs towards the end; plus I just love the Wicked Twisters as a group so goddamn much
Also, Neo's combat is just so much better than the original. the first game takes the cake on being very experimental, but it's also straight up broken. Neo's combat just feels more satisfying to play as you have have a genuinelly good synergy between your pins and properly combo enemies
