I dislike eternal just because I don't like all the weapons, but feel forced(or at least HEAVILY encouraged) to use all of them all the time. The purpose of variety is just to have something appealing to everyone, not have everyone using everything. The game feels more like playing an MMO cycling cooldowns and performing an ability rotation during a fight, just in a first person perspective. That's not what I look for in shooters, ergo I don't like it. I'm just looking to blowing shit up in ways I find fun with the weapons I like, even better if it's co-op. Fortunately, there's plenty of other shooters out there just like that, so I've got no reason to try and force myself to like eternal.

This is just irrelevant. In 2016 you never run out unless you are just shooting into a wall. Gas cans and ammo crates galore. In Eternal the chainsaw only gives 50% of your max ammor which for the shotgun is 24 shells. The ssg takes 2 shells per shot. This means that in your scenario the player would have to fire the ssg a maximum of 6 times between chainsaw recharges in order to not run out completely. This is obviously unbelievably contrived and moronic.

DE Combat Shotgun is much stronger than 2016’s crappy shotgun, and SSG is also stronger until you get Double Trouble in 2016 (it deals like 1000 damage per blast in 2016 and 1700 in Eternal).

Yeah they completely ruined secrets in eternal. In 2016 the secrets were well places and felt like a natural part of the map. You could even get certain weapons early if you know where to find them. In eternal they just feel tacked on, like they decided a secret is supposed to be there then carved out a part of the map.

I disliked the third person cutscenes for the same reason, in 2016 you maintained a constant first person view and control was rarely ever taken away totally, making the player really immersed and part of the story as a power fantasy should. Weird to say, but I really liked being locked in a room, like Hayden's office, for about a minute looking at the artefacts or pretending to sit on a chair, it was fun downtime between engagements without being mind numbingly boring and when a cutscene was required it didn't strictly break the FPV and were incredibly brief, like the close up of the first imp or triggering Vega's core meltdown. It really feels like you're someone in this real world rather than just playing a video game, which Eternal fails in by making you a spectator of a gameshow.
Imo they divulged too much and went too far making it an epic fantasy when Doom is supposed to be a dark sci-fi with fantasy elements; reading the Codex and watching the cutscenes really makes me feel like there's just nothing left when 2016 set promised so much. It also doesn't help that most of the homosexuals fawning over the game literally cannot read the lore, so baseless misconceptions proliferate rampantly.

My only complaint with the game is the platforming mechanics, because I just hate platformers. I also think they made the ammo "economy" work the way it does was to force you to use your whole arsenal. This isn't an optimal game design choice, IMO. Would have rather seen them implement more synergy between weapon types that made switching more effective. This would have encouraged players to switch weapons a lot but allowed them to play the way they want either way.

The weapon balance is better, generally. I miss the Gauss Siege, and the ballista doesn't feel as good, but overall the weapon balance is much better. The problems with the gameplay are mostly down to the constant fricking cooldowns on everything. So I wouldn't say it's worse, just more of a sidegrade: guns work better, other mechanics don't work as well.
It's all of the style and tone that are irreparably fricked in Eternal.

It has monsters from Doom 2 and it has monster numbers closer to originals. It has entirely different mechanics but so does 2016. 2016 introduced leveling up, perks, runes, weapon points etc.

Do they need those, though? I don't think that vanilla original games are THAT good by themselves, but user content is unrivaled in quality. You can find WADs designed for classic controls, but you can also find WADs designed for modern ports which support vertical aim and jumping (and even require it).
Still, the art style didn't "age". Old Dooms were colorful games. They had some darkness, horror elements, some bloody corpses strewn around, but they weren't all brown and gritty like, say, Quake.

You don't have infinite ammo in OG Doom and SSG isn't as powerful - it's like RL, but with less range, DPS and splash.

The thing with Eternal is that it is not a hard game, but you gotta learn the rules. You can't just go in and say "I don't need any of your mechanics, I will grab this gun and go nuts". You gotta learn the ropes first, and then you can get away with a lot of bullshit.

SSG is literally THE weapon i would argue its stronger than even doom 2016 version, maybe if you are playing some autistic WADs ammo is a problem but we are talking about base games and there was never a big issue for me similar to doom 2016.

The platforming and lack of ammo are shit but the whole gameplay loop of having to chainsaw for ammo is terrible and cucks your movement in a genre that has mostly been about aiming and strafeing previously

i've been replaying the entire series, but never played eternal. is it hard? what's fun and what's crummy about it? if you love it, feel free to shill hard because i am excited to try it. but if you think it sucks, i'd like to hear that too.
