I've been wondering for a while now. What happens to gacha games when they get shut down? I've heard stories of people spending tens of thousands of dollars on gacha, but never about what happens to their purchases after a game closes down. Do they get refunded? Do they get any compensation at all?

Because otherwise it'd be the same thing as throwing your money into a bottomless pit.

not really, I would equate it more to going to a cinema or renting movies
You pay money to get some enjoyment but you don't actually own anything

You pay like, what, I dunno, 30 bucks to watch a movie? Add snacks or whatever. And then you leave being like "sick, I watched a nice movie" or "that movie fricking sucked"
If you really liked that movie, you'll buy a physical copy so that you can watch it anytime you want. For a one-time payment. Or you just torrent it. And then you can watch it all you want for as long as you want, for free.
Gacha games meanwhile suck out hundreds or even thousands of dollars from your vallet, and you get nothing. Then they shut down and you can't even play them anymore. No refunds.

You're also forgetting most people only watch a movie once anyways.

I rewatched Shrek 2 more times than I can count

Should have stopped 2 rewatches again so you could still count it.

That's a bit of an anamoly but even then, your 20$ DVD from back then still works. Even if it didn't, you could stream it for free in like 2 clicks. A movie or TV show isn't very comporable. No studio could ever delete a movie the way they could delete a gacha. Once the torrents are out there, they're out there.

idk for me gacha games are more like, I'm having fun reading the story / enjoying the gameplay and just give em like 20 bucks so they keep afloat
I get the same "that was cool" or "that was shit" as with movies

If you look at what you're signing when you start the game you'll see that "all your data related to this game belongs to the company that made it" and that the company may make any change to the game or any of it's components with no prior notice". So I'll let you imagine what happens when they decide to shut off the servers, and no it definitely does not involve a refund, obviously.

nope, it's gone and done, see games that had an early end of service like Princess Connect, it was an 1 month warning saying they were turning off the servers and a frick you to anyone caring

Gacha is the digital form of disposable single-use garbage. They can't and won't be preserved. It all just disappears into the digital abyss.
Spend your time and money on real games instead.

How fricking STUPID do you have to be to even remotely consider that a company would give out mass refunds over this?
You really think a) their business model plans for uptime lasting generations and b) they'd just go "Welp, we've gotta pay the customers back- all employees must hand in any wages we paid you, you worked for free now".

Just how absolutely motherfricking BRAINDEAD must you be to even entertain for a MOMENT that this is an option?

They didn't take anything back. They closed down. It's more like

If McDonalds shut down would you expect them to refund every purchase anyone ever made?

I fantasize about the government declaring doordash a predatory business and forcing it to refund everyone everything they've ever spent on it
