I've been working on compiling additional tracks to add to the soundtrack of dead or alive xtreme beach volleyball. I'm trying to decide if I should add any bigger hits from groups that are already on the album, or if that will destroy the charm of it being likely composed of whatever songs they could get the rights to at an affordable rate. For example, Big Mountain's cover of "I Love Your Way" would fit nicely, but wouldn't they have included that if they could have, meaning, was it only not there because the licensing would have been too expensive? Likewise, I feel like "All-Star" by Smashmouth would fit well (my other rule is that no song can be included that was released later than June 2002, on the assumption that they could not have reasonably gotten in new music tracks past that point, though for the record, the latest release on the soundtrack is "Move It Like This" by Baha Men, released in February 2002). I'm trying to make additions that don't overshadow existing tracks or make them feel ill-fitting, so having say, a who's who of the biggest pop hits of the day next to some relatively unknown songs would just feel strange. With that said, here's my current list of additions:

Ricky Martin - "Shake Your Bon-Bon"
Color Me Badd - "I Wanna Sex You Up"
Smashmouth - "All-Star"
Big Mountain - "I Love Your Way"
Pink - "Get the Party Started"

I might have to just to listen to some more deep cuts from 90s pop and r&b releases before I get more ideas. It's tough to come up with stuff that fits the criteria I've set out. Curious what you think, anon, about these selections, and about what else might fit into the soundtrack additions I am planning. Still on the fence about some of these selections, and willing to take feedback.

Would make more sense if you'd choose songs from the same frame like Lady

as much as I love modjo, I don't know if it fits the game well. The soundtrack leans heavily toward late 90s pop, ska, and reggae. Most of the songs appear to be from 1999 or close to it. Rare exceptions exist ("Loving You", "Brazilian Sugar", "Is This Love") but I'm trying to avoid expanding that set too much. For lack of better words, "Lady (Hear Me Tonight)" is a bit too "cool" for this game soundtrack, it's one that I'd sooner call "fun" and "happy".

For overall timeframe focus, I admit that Color Me Badd is perhaps a stretch; It just feels strongly to me like something that fits other tracks in the game. The song subject matter as well as the music stylings are ones that I feel are conducive to the goal of fitting the existing soundtrack and the general "feel" of the game.

Was Pure Shores by All Saints on there? I don't think it was, but that would fit like a glove. It's odd if they'd have Spice Girls but not All Saints.

oh yes, this is a very good fit. It has that definite sound which fits the game. Incidentally the soundtrack has not only spice girls but also b*witched. They worked double time to cover the girl group pop fads.

I'm considering now as well "Baby-Baby-Baby" by TLC. Not sure if that's the direction in which to go though. Need to keep reviewing more music. If I get to 10 tracks I feel strongly about then I can probably go with that.

Just pick whatever 90s-00s hits that feels suitable OP.
Anyways, I always liked this cover of Careless Whisper.

I even made a Spotify list with most DOAX1 and 2 songs because the stock music for DOX3 sucks.

Which Dead or Alive girl is the best girl? Not sure. A lot of good coom material. Itagaki must have been the ultimate coomer to come up with that many themes and types that Just Work.

My personal favorite is Hitomi, though I definitely preferred Kasumi out of the original 4 (Ayane, Kasumi, Lei Fang, Tina.) Fun fact: Ayane was 16 until the DOA5/DOAX3 time skip, if you were wondering why DOAX 1&2 didn't show up on Xbox Backwards Compatibility.

The Japanese chose the girls that made it to DOAX3 and the initial Venus Vacation roster. After the heavily promoted "Barely 18" and "Bigger breasts" girl they went with young Japanese girls.

Hitomi is my favorite as well. Im surprised she edged out Momiji or maybe im more surprised that Momiji is that low. I didnt think Hitomi was particularly popular among the DOAs

That was one of the unique features of the original Xbox with the ability to rip in custom soundtracks. Just like with the newer flashcarts for Genesis that can do CD music I hoped someone would inject and replace more fitting house music into Bare Knuckle 3, I appreciate the same commitment you have to the first XVB.

The songs of the first DOAXVB has a cheesy musical flair that was kind of cringey for the time so maybe Will Smith would fit with Summertime or Jiggy, but for me I think something more aggressive like the Jason Nevins remix of N.E.R.D.'s Rockstar would work real good for the game if it wasn't already used for Burnout. Fitting of the time, maybe some pop songs like Dir en Grey's Yokan, L'arc en Ciel's winter fall, one of Globe's ballads, Utada Hikaru's Automatic, TRF's Boy Meets Girl. For the timeframe, maybe something more party-like with Alien Ant Farm's Smooth Criminal ... I can choose so much even with a chill vibe more fitting to the voyeur aspects of the game ... so many songs even locked in the specified window of time not to mention some remixes of old songs.

They always figure out what I would like before I know it. This chart

should drop Kokoro, Nyotengu, Momiji, and Elena and swap them for Mila, Christie, NiCO, and Tamaki into the 9 green spots

OP this thread fricking rules and I want to see your progress kept somewhere in posterity. Start up a forum post, a github, a google doc whatever, I wanna hear from (You). Licensed music in vidya and curating your own in game soundtrack is where some of my most cherished vidya memories come from, some not retro, however.
My personal contribution to this soundtrack is Tangerine Speedo by Caviar. Very underrated band from the time period that got chewed up and spat out by their record label.
