I've heard a lot of good things about this duology but haven't tried either of them yet.

I've heard a lot of good things about this duology but haven't tried either of them yet. I've played SMT3-5 + Apocalypse and every Persona (except for Eternal Punishment). SMTIV is my favorite out of the lot, I just dig its cyberpunk atmosphere and story. How do these games compare to mainline SMT?

DDS plays more like a traditional RPG with a fixed party. There's no demon recruiting. That's about the biggest difference. It still nails the SMT feel. Also, the story gets really batshit crazy in the second game. Recommended.

Was that ever traditional? I think it went mainstream during the PS2 era.

          >DDS plays more like a traditional RPG with a fixed party

with no "leader death = game over" crap

The reason for that is generally because of how other games handle party members. In DDS, Serph isn't actually the most powerful or most versatile member of his team, so there's no reason to balance him out by making his survival mandatory.

In SMT, the protagonist is generally the lynchpin of the team, while in the Nusona games, the protagonist is the most powerful and most versatile. So for the purposes of gameplay balance, you make them absolutely necessary. If everyone were equal, then there would be no purpose to that.

            >Serph isn't actually the most powerful

Oh yes he is, especially after they become Seraph

              Anonymous

That's only at the very end of the second game. While Serph has the advantage in that the player can decide his stats, he has no other significant advantage over the other characters. Everyone has different skill trees, everyone is customizable to an extent. So making the game end when he dies just because he's the main character is mechanically pointless.

In SMT3 and SMT5 specifically, the protagonist is generally your strongest and more versatile character. Same with P3, P4 and P5. So to balance out the protagonist's sheer superiority in every single respect, you add the caveat that when he dies, it's game over. The more powerful and versatile the protagonist is, the greater the penalty should be if he dies. It's basic gameplay balance. On the other hand, if the player character does not have a dramatic advantage over others, then there shouldn't be a penalty for his death.

DDS is broken one you have enough skills and stats,
that and defeat Hitoshura is a must.
Why Gale can't have more Luck

With the challenge against Heat, Serph is better and that's not say anything for a small perspective

              Anonymous

You don't get most of Serph's perks until halfway through DDS2. It'd be completely fricking moronic to penalize the player over something that happens so late in the second volume.

That's wrong. 3 member party but your party members will leave at some points depending on the story. This is notorious in DDS2.

DDS got a narrative that's infused with Hindu symbolism and themes, a stellar BGM, and a cast of characters that are complex and have a real depth to them. It's too bad it's not as popular as Hashino's other game Nocturne. This spin-off deserves more love quite honestly. The atmosphere, creature designs, dungeons, and amazing battle system make it one of the best PS2 RPGs Would love for Hashino to make another game like it.

DDS is really similar to Nocturne
    >inb4 hurr durr cos both are SMT, moron
in a way that both have same press turn combat, and you learn skills from Mantra (similar to Magatana, but you don't need to lv up your characters, just get enough AP).
And thank the frick Christ, you can (un)equip skills at any time, you don't have to delete them...like in Nocturne.

Games are pretty, good OST, really interesting story, but random encounter rate can be too frequent. Play them.
But emulate PS2 versions. I heard that PS3 ports are really bad.

I like other megaten games but dds not so much, it really highlights how important demon fusion and demon negotiations are to franchise identity.
It still has a great soundtrack though.

Demon design doesn't really mesh that well though. Like it's never really explained why only important characters and bosses have unified demon form designs while every generic enemy is different.

Would anyone mind summarizing and/or selling me on DDS? Maybe in comparison to the other SMT games? I have this downloaded and ready to be emulated but I need a shove to commit to it. I've played the first hour or so a couple years ago and liked the intro quite a bit. I just had some shit to do for a couple weeks and forgot what was going on in the game when I came back to it.

It has a mystery feel to it in DDS1. The duology is plot-focused. Just be patient, talk to everyone and try to do as many things as you can. Pay attention to the sun phases to sell stuff at good prices. The encounter rate is pretty high so save often.

Nah. P2 was trash from a gameplay perspective. Complete fricking trash. Utterly irredeemable and worthless. There is literally NOTHING good about P2's combat system. Not a one.
