I've heard that Obsidian employees have to take vitamin D supplements because of all the time they spend living in Bethesda's shadow.

I've heard that Obsidian employees have to take vitamin D supplements because of all the time they spend living in Bethesda's shadow.

Instead of making their own game they're now trying to make Bethesda RPGs and judging by the outer worlds they're failing miserably at it.

Will this be the hill they die on?

Didn't they said Avowed takes place in one of their other IP, Pillars of Eternity?
It's essentially another title for the franchise.

But it's a completely different type of game. Pillars of Eternity was a top down turn based game.

They're recycling the IP so they don't have to pay licenses and have more creative control but it's gonna be nothing like Pillars of Eternity and is a reboot of the property

Why won't they use Bethesda's Creation Engine/Gamebryo and the base they created for Skyrim, Fallout and now Starfield in the future games?

inb4 it's shit, Sawyer praised Gamebryo a lot, claimed that New Vegas would be impossible without it.

They started this project long before Microsoft acquired them and Bethesda.
But for future projects it might be a good idea to use Gamebryo for open world games.

I wonder if Obsidian could swallow their pride and ask Bethesda for their engine. The creation engine has a very bad reputation among idiots who make up a majority of their fanbase.

The other question would be if Bethesda agrees because I don't think Microsoft would force them. Obviously, Bethesda knows the value of their engine. Nobody can make a Bethesda style game in the unreal engine and they know it. As long as they keep the engine to themselves they've got a monopoly on that type of game.

why is this? i'm genuinely curious; what's so special about gamebyro/creation engine or whatever the hell the toddmobile is called?

NTA but the creation engine was designed with the idea of micro detail and sandbox freedom in mind: you can walk into a house and pick up everything off the table, move it around since it's all affected by the physics engine, sell the shit you take, make a pyramid with the heads of your enemies, everyone has a schedule that can be as simplistic or complex as you want, you can pick flowers, talk to everyone, etc.
It doesn't always do the best job at reacting the most realistically to what you do but it lets you do it.
So the engine has to keep track of a lot of things and most developers won't invest the time in making all that shit happen in their engine.

The other big thing Their toolset is extremely easy to learn and it's very good at making stuff quickly. At 14 I learned how to use Morrowind's Construction Set by myself without every using any tutorials. I didn't know shit about scripting but in a few days I could create new cells, link them to other cells, put enemies in them, items etc. And that's knowledge that is still perfectly usable when fire up Skyrim's Creation Kit 20 years later.
It's easy for Bethesda to hire new people and teach them how to use it.
And it's also easy for them to rapidly iterate over what they have when you don't have to worry about teaching a lot of people how to use completely new tech for them.

Their whole development environment is built around ease of learning and relatively fast progression from concept to proof of concept to something with meat on its bones. It's why they can make such huge games,.

Gamebryo is a toolset proved by two decades of development, you can try to recreate it but it will not work well for at least 2 iteration. EA did this mistake when decided to move ME development to frostbite, so they got even less flexible engine than ue3 with worse tools.

      >New Vegas would be impossible
Of course, when you have a ridiculously small budget you can build RPG only with the engine that was made for such genre and includes all tools what you might need

Do people actually think it's shit? It has its flaws but for a open world rpg it can't get better

Xray is a fricking nightmare that took the community years of fiddling with the leaked engine source code to make it usable.

Manyears wasted fiddling around broken jank code until this happened https://github.com/OpenXRay/xray-16

Doesn't matter. New Vegas is Obsidian's Morrowind. Neither Bethesda nor Obsidian will ever surpass their previous works. They are both living inside their own shadows now.

It sucks, I would actually like another Pillars game but Avowed looks like ass. How many actually good devs are left anyway, Sawyer is there for now, is Fenstermaker still on? Only a matter of time until it's just the new hires and Feargus, that'll befun.

They should just do expansion packs for games made by other companies. Well, back then when they had competent writers. New Vegas was good because they only had to add content to an existing game.

They already said that with the acquisition of Bethesda the project was re-scoped to a smaller, tighter experience more skin to Dragon Age than Skyrim.
Now that MS owns Bethesda, they're pivoting Obsidian from knockoff Bethesda to knockoff Bioware.
