              Doom is literally built entirely on rote memorisation, you absolute moron. With Blood you can just slice the cake going into every room and you're prepared. With doom you get raped by triggering 20 enemies spawning all around you then reload with knowledge that there's an encounter there. My first playthrough of Blood was on well done and I only ever used one save at the start of a level. Doom is a quicksave simulator.

                How bad do you need to be to get filtered by doom? Enemies rarely spawn while you're in a room, they mostly use monster closets unless you're playing on nightmare. How have you managed to be wrong about everything all throughout the thread?

                blood absolutely opens monster closets on you, the difference is that in blood the monster closet instantly kills you. I've played through blood episode 1 and plutonia experiment with the one save per level rule and blood was incredibly lame to play in comparison to Doom. You rarely get those moments where you just whip out rockets or plasma gun and start blasting everything, it's a tactical shooter masquerading as a boomer shooter from start to finish.

                Any "monster closets" in Blood are behind clearly visible doors, meaning when you walk into a level you know something will come out of that exact spot and so you can already start mapping in your head nearest cover and movements available to you. Getting "instakilled" by one is down to your stupidity and unpreparedness entirely. Rarely if ever does the game pull the same kind of "spawning enemies all around you in a completely random location" shit that doom pulls.

    Honestly, I want to care about stories in games but I never can. Too many of them have lore tied to external media or lines and lines of in game text and dialogue that any sane person would skip because they’re busy playing the game. Also a lot of fiction is just nonsensical rubbish that doesn’t make sense that it becomes hard to give a shit about the plot since I’m left with more questions than answers. To date the only stories I’ve been able to give a shit about were halo, gears of war, and resident evil, and that’s because I’ve played all their main games multiple times from when I was young, and watched multiple YouTube videos about their plots. But these days I’m left wishing game stories were more moron proof.

      I largely agree. I've played so many games, I have over 120 on my Deck right now. The amount of vidya stories I've actually felt impressed and engrossed by can be counted on half of one hand. I used to attribute it to me growing up reading more than playing games, but I think storytelling just doesn't really fit the medium. Obviously most gamers are fine with these shit stories and I'm not judging them for it, clearly we're the outliers, but I just don't give a frick 99% of the time and I really really want to.

    Should I give Eternal another try? I love 2016, but dropped Eternal because it felt worse in almost every way. But people continue to say that it's the best shooter ever or something which makes me hesitant.

    It was in the way and made it's sequel unplayable. I play id games for the graphics and I was disappointed. Massive downgrades from what was shown at quakecon/e3 as usual. Al; the difference between being impressive or not. Controls on console are better than most but still unplayable. Lack of ADS has no place. Next time use a low res and make everywhere look different. Each level may as well be a couple of rooms. Seeing the same thing over and over in an attempt to get you lost sucks.

      marauder is the only enemy in the base game that forces you at gunpoint to learn how to fight them, which is arguably bad design. Maybe on lower difficulties Marauder's swing should've been slowed down and his weakened state been made longer
      for all of the complaints that eternal has "simon says enemies" every normal enemy in the game can be trivialized by turning down the difficulty and hitting them with a lot of whatever- except the marauder who will repeatedly wreck you until you can find a way to consistently get past the shield. he's the only enemy (other than bosses) who won't accept you turning your brain off and emptying all of your weapons

          I don't care about the Marauder and I like enemies having counters, but if lowering the difficulty makes every enemy brainless except for this one particular enemy, that could be an issue. If they're already saying that they don't care to learn the game and they just want to run through it there's little reason that you couldn't crank down the things that makes the Marauder uniquely punishing on a difficulty that isn't supposed to be punishing.

          ULTRAKILL changes enemy behaviors and makes their attacks far, far slower, for instance.

      His animations are moronic and don't convey what he's doing, you end up just keeping distance and waiting for the "ching" sound.
      And the duration on the stun is so short it severely restricts which weapons you can use, so you end up just doing stun -> quickswap to BFG and click asap.

      It's fine because Eternal gives you a FRICKTON of tools to generate infinite resources and to dodge everything, but I'd rather play 99% of the game's content that does NOT have a Marauder in it.

    DOOM 2016 and Eternal were gifts from God himself to save the FPS genre.
    HALO effectively killed the entire FPS shooter genre for almost 20 years.
    It took DOOM 2016 and DOOM Eternal to remind people that FPS shooters are supposed to be fast as frick and filled with action.

        It's funny how New Order, which isn't all that different from a modern military styled shooter in the grand scheme of things, it just lets you run and gun and hipfire freely was still viewed as a complete revolution because shooters were so fricking bad at the time. And then Doom 2016 was so much more resonant with slow shooter fatigue with its pure combat focus and "get out of the way and let me kill demons" narrative that everyone forgot new order existed.

      I like story based games but I failed to find any reason to give a shit about what's going on in 2016 & Eternal, especially the latter. It expects me to read all their fricking shit to connect the dots, and I don't feel emotionally involved with anyone, they're either immortal or close to it.
