it's a good entrypoint for people who aren't into MMOs as it's story focused and most of the story can now be done solo with some npcs. Gameplay has been streamlined but stil remains very fun there are 14 jobs to pick and you can switch to any of them.
If you have money to spare yes why not, otherwise play the trial first and see if you like it. Better than wasting fifty dollars on a slow start game

Junior, you are about to learn how shit Final Fantasy 14 is. Aside from the massive download, you have to try to sign up with an ever changing Square Enix account. Their spotty servers will have you trying repeatedly...from scratch.
NGL, anon, there are so many different ways to buy the game, that it is difficult to confidently tell you one way or another. If you buy it and just get a code, the sub might not activate until you use the code to download it. If you buy it directly from the SE store, you will probably need to log in with an account to complete the purchase, which may start the sub month, but I do not know that with absolute certainty. I'd need to know a little more about how you are trying to buy it before I'm feel comfortable telling you with any confidence.
I was playing the free trial on steam, and i want to buy it on steam. The thing is, i cant play it this month, but im aware that the purchase of the game comes with a 1 month subscription. I don't want to lose that month. So thats basically my question, do i lose the month if i purchase it but dont play the game?

My guess would be that the one month sub is going to be a code that you get, and redeem. As long as you haven't used it, I don't believe you would lose it. When you want to come back, then use the code, and you should still have it.

Just play the free trial up to heavensward, what the "it gets better" gays don't tell you is that while the story gets better the general gameplay loop stays exactly the same so if you're not a single player story gamer you're really not going to enjoy it much

Once you hit Heavensward try the Dark Knight and Machinist out, then if you want to proceed into the rest of the game then buy it and do the story over a month or two of if playing for many hours a day, or 3-4 months if you are busy. Nearly every dungeon has optional AI party members now so you don't have to worry about wanting to play a dps so your rotation is more than 123
FFXIV does not play like an MMO at all so you'll be fine. The gameplay sucks though.

Heavensward was good.
I felt the beginning was its strongest part. Or rather even the questline and introduction in ARR about the dragons and Ishgardians was good.
Then being chased and having nowhere to go and being given asylum practically felt really well executed.
The only issue with Heavensward is past Thordan, it was like whatever after that.
Btw doing Thordan extreme properly with my guild was one of the most fun experience I had in any mmo.

I found it stronger because you are dealing with the fallout of the chickens of the leadership choice that Thordan did everything he did to maintain coming home to roost, the adverse reaction to someone trying to right the wrongs that leadership caused, and helping bring a final end to a thousands year conflict, while also fighting BBEG, and save a cherished ally.
Like, I breakdown every part of each expansion into the core campaign, and the followup patch campaigns. HW is the exception. I consider 3.0 and all of its MSQ patches to be the most tightly knit portion of the XIV MSQ.

Arguably, at the point where the modded character makes you question if it's still a XIV character or otherwise if the proportions have gone clearly gone askew due to horrible fetishes and other shit. I would argue a couple in that collage either don't apply or at worst teeter on the line. Like, black Hilda is stupid but not really a modbeast. XIV has 3 shitty parts to it. You have the rabbit shit in Endwalkers story, ranjit in SHB, and the entire beginning half of Stormblood.
Levelings great, you just start on a bonus exp server and you can 1-80 in a day.
If you do what most gays tell you and story skip ARR you will get burned hard. ARR has alot of dungeons and trials that break the monotony of fetch quests and story building. Stormblood will hit you in the wiener and make you quit if you dont have side stuff you like doing by then.
Literally everyone sped through the beginning of Stormblood. There is no point reading half of the garbage that happens. Just pay attention when Garleans are on screen, have fun with the Xaela tribes, and ignore everything thing else because it's a Lyse self insert storyline. One you get to post Stormblood everything is worth watching.

I started a few weeks back and have fallen in love with it, OP. The beginning is slow-going but the story and characters grow on you quick. Just be sure to socialize when you can, otherwise the world can feel a bit lonely.

Nah, you don't need anything. All story dungeons can be done with duty support (npcs), and there's an automatic duty finder for story trials (bosses) and other normal content like mandatory 24-players raids.
Its pretty easy to make friends in game, theres some content you will want friends to do with but the story content is all doable alone.

It's highs are very high, although there are long stretches where pacing is an issue. If you're not in a rush and will pay attention to the quests and the story, there's a lot to love. Gameplay wise I love it but I'm not a MMO sweat and some people say it's garbage. Watch a video about how each job plays and decide based on that, although you can play all jobs on one toon so doesn't matter too much.

FF14 can be pretty different in execution to FF16, even if the structure is very similar. You have a player created character that is mostly "mute", the cutscenes are much cheaper than what you get in FF16, there's way more reading in the game than FF16, and the combat is tab-target not action. I'm not saying don't play it, but you should try it out first.
The free trial covers the base game, A Realm Reborn, and the first expansion, Heavensward. It's a lot of content, over 100 hours, and you should give that a shot first before putting down money.

I bought it at launch. Got fricked, returned my first gaming pc I bought for it, and bought a new one and picked it up when a coworker convinced me to come back for legacy status. That period, when it was playable, (still bad) and everyone was simply working together to complete the story that would never be there again was the greatest gaming experience of my life. That being said, I played on and off after 2.0 but quit forever after EW when it was clear the quality was lowering and never going back up. I personally think the time is over to start getting into it. But, that's just me.
Here's my group beating the 1.0 last boss. Really interesting thing to be a part of. I'll miss it. But I can't in good conscience recommend anyone START playing FFXIV now

I don't know how they'll top EW and I kind of expect they won't, but I'm still having fun on this ride and I'll be riding it until it stops being fun.

I also got really lucky in my FC. It was a random request I received and accepted but their culture was really nice and I stayed. They had weekly meetings where they would raffle off rare items, even mogstation items and steam codes sometimes. One kid bought like 5 persona 4 golden codes he gave out when that released. It's gonna be ages before any of people go back to XIV. They're working on making 16 PC ready and probably making an updated version to address people's valid complaints about the shitty parts of 16.
If we consider how they already explained the dev flow, I think it's safe to assume that priority have already returned to 14, they are probably doing the engine upgrades now with a bulkier team, while the engine guys finish polishing the PC version.
The thing is: will 16 have xpacs? because if they do, we can expect it to be massive like 14, so bye bye full team.
But then, for all the 16 taking resources argument, stormblood was made when 16 was already in production and it was the bulkiest xpac in terms of content.
I can only imagine that the engine upgrade is what is siphoning resources out of EW

You can ignore all side stuff, it's a relic from the original WoW copied design and the fact that XP used to be complete shit.
You should be doing quests that have that blue icon though (that aren't FATEs), since those lead to unlocks usually. Things like getting access to PotD, the hair stylist, glamours, etc.

nah, levequests are just optional grind for random rewards. they're the equivalent of dailyquests.
It kinda sucks that EO was made for the raiders of FF instead of being in the mold of HoH and PotD, but I totally understand why they made it that way.

eo I could forgive how streile and predictable it is compared to hoh and palace if the fricking mob hp at least scaled and started out low. i fricking HATE the first 30 floors in that place more than anything with the 1 min respawns
leves are completely irrelevant, they used to be a way to grind lvls back in ARR and a holdover ssytem from 1.0, and got eventually phased out for combat jobs.
you can do those for some titles attatched, but they are not mandatory and not required for shit, I personally just unlock them and ignore until I have 100 leves to burn for easy money with the crafting ones. ah they can be a cheap way to lvl crafters and gatherers too if you ever care for it.
The yellows aren't necessary, blues unlock new stuff. Do them or keep them for leveling alt jobs. I mostly did them to keep my map clean, but getting nods to them here and there is nice, post ARR ones sometimes are even good.
I feel like it's nice extra lore, if you really really care about the world, and there are some yellow ones that give unique rewards besides the blue quests
the only sidequest ever required will be shown when you reach a certain point in the story, and msq will direct you to it.
other than this specific one, no, msq is self contained.
BUT
you should hit the blue quest markers as they unlock content, dungeons, trials, raids, more raids, emotes, hair, side content in general.
the yellow quests are your regular mmo side quest that give some lore on the region you're on, and sometimes have a small reward.
I'd honestly recommend you do blue quests as you go, because when you reach max lvl you will want to unlock the side content anyway, doing both together wont make you feel so overwhelmed

Never ever join FC statics. Skill level will be all over the place and it'll create a lot of tension. I'd only do it if nobody cares about weekly loot which I doubt.

FC raids always will have that person who is absolute shit but will never be replaced because they're friends with FC/raid leader
so you are now forced to basically raid with a 1% healer who doesn't understand mit planning because she is dating the raid leader, and everyone is now forced to use pots because their dps is so shit that is goes below 1k most of the times.
