I tried this out based on glowing Ganker reviews but now I realize all of that was just shilling without merit. Can anyone tell me what all the fuss is about and how is it better than JA2?

It was like that since release. Other things were improved with patches, but that balance decision stayed. There were mods to change this basically from the first couple days the game was out.

The representation of weapon ranges is much better than in JA2. Still piddly but you need a fricking sniper rifle to shoot beyond 50 metres in JA2

Jagged Alliance is neither well known or respected.
It had mediocre sales, so bad in fact the company went under. But like all mediocre games from the 90s it somehow developed a moldy fan base that spend more time talking about a the game than anyone has ever spent playing it.

The voice acting and dialogue is worse as a whole with mercs I loved like Igor being turned into morons, the guns do sound worse, the static portraits are a massive downgrade to talking heads, and the IMP is so shitty I didn't even bother taking one. There's maybe half as many mercs as JA2 and you say there's more content. You are a gay and your shit's all moronic.
Each tile in JA2 is supposed to represent 10 feet, so 12 tiles away is a shot that's 120 feet away. Long distance engagements are 2-4 screens away since the game was capped to 640x480 and only mods later let you change the resolution.

Is it really though? I just finished JA2 recently and I really liked it, looking at some of the videos and info about 3 makes me feel kinda worried. Like soldier spells and such.
some mercs have unique traits that make the mercs more unique, like fidel being able to throw 2 grenades at once or Wolf making every world map action 33% faster to complete, but its really nothing game changing

Although I agree with "some" of your complaints and despite the crappy interface (clicking on something 5 times before it grabs it etc.) and ctd issues (about once every few hours for me) and finally the shitty loot drops, I actually FRICKING LOVE this game. Not really sure why, I just do. I never played 1 or 2 tho so there's that.

I'm enjoying it. I can see it getting better too.
This game could definitely use a lot of fixes and love but I'm having a blast with it. One thing that has really been pissing me off is the civilians (and other NPC's) sometimes stand/cower in the only doorway in or out of somewhere and I have to shoot them to get them out of the fricking way. Thus "killing a civilian". It's bullshit and you should be able to push thru.
