Not a story issue per se, but four also has a really anticlimactic final boss fight. Reika in 3 and the Kusabi in 2 were both really intimidating and made for great climax battles to the story, but whassername in 4 you can just run in and dunk her with an easy fatal frame. I honestly think I had her beat and had started playing the piano within about fifteen seconds of starting the fight.

while there's the very obvious midgame horror section there's the short chase at the end of the first area and the end of the second area with the ginat in the background approaching are pretty spooky too. I'd say that the overall setting is definitely dark in a way that is similar to horror, but again as an action game it doesn't make the regular gameplay feel spooky. Castlvania (at least the later games) have a much campier feel in comparison

This shit's been a thing for at least 20 years now. Hell, Haunting Ground has a costume literally called "Illegal in Some States". Why is this a point of contention now?
In some ways it's refined Mask. The combat's definitely faster and the exploration's a mix of open forest and smaller mansions. Its story is also depressing as frick, though it has a twist in the back end that absolutely fricks the lore. That all said, it's probably the easiest entry, it has pacing issues with a lot of pointless backtracking, and being made in DoA5's engine it's generally considered to be sexualized to the detriment of the horror. It's probably best to start with one of the first 2 if you've never played a Fatal Frame before, but between Mask and Maiden, I'd say Maiden does a better job of capturing the normal tone of the series but Maiden's a better overall game.
1 if you can handle a lack of polish, 2 if you can't. Play 3 after both, and after that you can do whatever. As far as the easily accessible games go, play Mask if you want better horror and Maiden if you want better gameplay, but really you could just emulate the first 2.

It does wear its age on its sleeve with the low-res textures and some dodgy transitions, namely with the item grabbing mechanic, but aside from some occasionally messed up text (I noticed at least 2 fricked up hozuki doll hints) the game works fine.

while there's the very obvious midgame horror section there's the short chase at the end of the first area and the end of the second area with the ginat in the background approaching are pretty spooky too. I'd say that the overall setting is definitely dark in a way that is similar to horror, but again as an action game it doesn't make the regular gameplay feel spooky. Castlvania (at least the later games) have a much campier feel in comparison

In some ways it's refined Mask. The combat's definitely faster and the exploration's a mix of open forest and smaller mansions. Its story is also depressing as frick, though it has a twist in the back end that absolutely fricks the lore. That all said, it's probably the easiest entry, it has pacing issues with a lot of pointless backtracking, and being made in DoA5's engine it's generally considered to be sexualized to the detriment of the horror. It's probably best to start with one of the first 2 if you've never played a Fatal Frame before, but between Mask and Maiden, I'd say Maiden does a better job of capturing the normal tone of the series but Maiden's a better overall game.

I played Fatal Frame 1. Gotta be honest, some ghosts were just complete bullshit, and I played the game on Normal, Hard and beat the challenges, some of them just acted in completely arbitrary ways or decide to attack half a second after teleporting behind you. Blind b***h just does whatever, not a single time I ran during her many battles and she just decides to lunge at me.
