On hiatus from my soul silver shiny badge quest but I'll bump your thread with some old teams
>HG/SS or GSC?
Heart Gold > Crystal > Soul Silver > Gold > Silver
>favorite Johto mon(s)?
Crobat, Kingdra, Sentret, Totodile, Togepi
>favorite thing about generation 2?
Gold was the first pokemon game I owned, but I'd played my friend's and my cousin's Yellow when I was younger. I enjoyed trying to fill out the pokedex and battling my overleveled Feraligatr+Ho-oh vs his overleveled Meganium+Lugia.
>soul silver shiny badge quest
How many layers of autism do you need to be on to start this, let alone finish it?
I appriciate your balltism, Anon.
I'd use heal balls for some of the pink mons, full color balls are better in my opinion.
That's absolutely mental anon, I can't imagine doing a vanilla shiny quest, big congrats on those teams.
Ultra based, I've been considering doing a mono-bug run in gen 2 for a while now because there's so many fun pokemon like Scizor and Shuckle. Plus my recent playthrough had made me appreciate Ledian's utility so much.
Please elaborate. I've always wanted to use Ledian, but never felt like it's stats/moves would be useful in gen 2. Where there specific fights you recall it putting in a lot of work?
Ledian is only useful in gen 2 because you get the elemental punch TMs early on which gives you great coverage, and its dual screens really helps its low defense and makes it a special wall. Mine was able to survive a Rock Slide and tank Selfdestructs with its Reflect.
It completely walls Chuck, can do work against Pryce if you set up Light Screen, can help against Clair, and can almost always switch into a Grass type with its x4 resistance.
I've been doing a limited dex challenge run tho so I had to make use of it, Ledian still isn't a great pokemon but in gen 2 it can pull its weight.
Sounds fun. I like using shitmons in game because the strategy for battles goes a little further beyond "click Super Effective move 6 times". During my last playthrough of Crystal, I used Arbok that won me several fights using Wrap and Paraflinching with Bite/Headbutt+Glare
Nice, I had an Arbok in my team too, its moveset was Earthquake / Sludge Bomb / Bite / Glare and it helped a ton throughout the game ever since I trained it to beat Morty. It died during the Lance fight, but it did its job very well.
started a polishedcrystal nuzlocke last night
Yaassss b***h you better motherfricking stan Venomoth, fellow bugsister!
cringe
Oh wow, wasn't expecting to see another Johto thread so soon, especially with my team there! Well it's going good so far, just been grinding in Mt. Silver. I was considering getting the team to lv. 77 to match Red's starters but I'm just gonna shoot for lv. 75.
>what are ya playin'
Playing Gold alongside gf playing Crystal
>what Johto things are you enjoying
Rolling through the game with my bros
Planning an early capture of Entei right after Ecruteak (Gonna friend ball a Zubat and grind Crobat till it can outspeed at lv 30 or so)
>HG/SS or GSC?
GSC all the way
>favorite Johto mon?
Heracross
>favorite thing about generation 2?
Really good selection of mons for maingame, the punch tms, early roaming legendaries, semi open progression after ekruteak
Currently have a regular playthrough in Crystal and a mono-normal in Gold. Not sure how the latter will go as a few of them greatly outclass the majority of them (especially when my team is just Noctowl, Raticate, and Togetic).
Currently fricking around in my 400 hour savefile in Crystal, training a number of Pokémon couples for particular uses of the Celebi glitch, but for different Pokémon.
Finally finished grinding, that anon's advice in the previous thread about grinding in the S.S. Aqua helped out. I'm surprised I didn't find a shiny while grinding in Mt. Silver
So this is the final team before Red, only 3 of my League team survived, I'm pretty excited to see how it goes. I feel relatively confident about it, the only scary pokemon in his team is either the Snorlax which I will use Gligar against and Blastoise since I don't have a perfect switch in to. Most likely someone will die to get a safe switch into Pikachu.
Glad my Pikachu survived all the way here so I can have the most epic Pikachu on Pikachu battle.
And Red is defeated, still a pretty tense fight but not as much as Lance's fight, probably because I had decent coverage against Red's team compared to only having a weak Ice type and a bug with Ice coverage against Lance's dragons.
Anyways here's what happened:
>I lead with Pikachu and take care of his with a few Returns. I decided to lead with it and not Gligar so I can bait in his Espeon and not Blastoise, which he does just that.
>I switch to Murkrow, it perfectly counters it since it can only be hit with Swift, and two Faint Attacks take it out. But now the inevitable happens, Red brings in Blastoise.
>I have no safe switch into it at all, and after looking at my team, I decided to sacrifice the good bird to bring in Pikachu, but not after hitting a crit Icy Wind for good measure. Pikachu easily takes it out.
>Next was his Snorlax, so I brought in my Snorlax killer, Gligar. After setting up a couple Curses and fully lowering its defense with Screech, I one-shotted it with Return, perfect.
>His last two were Charizard and Venusaur, so Magcargo can easily come in, tank some Flamethrowers, and take them both out easily.
nothing right now
honestly hgss == gs. they both provide solid experiences imo which is more than I can say about RBY and its remakes
steelix
the region, and its soul but in all honestly soul is just a proxy for nostalgia
>Ledian
Why would you torture yourself like that?
Because I was doing a limited dex challenge, and it ended up being very useful throughout the game. Plus, Ledian is a pretty cool bug.
He's basically Pulseman but in pokemon form
What are the restrictions for a limited dex challenege?
Here's the list I made, however I'm gonna edit it to include pokemon such as the Spearow and Caterpie lines and Stantler.
why is ledian bad?
typing?
stats?
movepool?
abilities?
location?
All of that but also evolving too late.
>why is it bad
stats, having only good Sp.Def and Speed
movepool
location, it's a version exclusive day-only on a single route
aaaaand it evolves level 18 for some obscure reason
Redpill me on Evilfish.
it's literally a good Pokémon, but filters this board and the entire world for some reason
>Chikorita -> Bayleef -> Meganium
Cut, Flash, Synthesis, Razor Leaf
>Geodude -> Graveler
Earthquake, Rock Throw, Rollout, Defense Curl
>Spearow -> Fearow
Return, Drill Peck, Fly, Steel Wing
>Abra -> Kadabra
Psychic, Fire Punch, Ice Punch, ThunderPunch
>Coloured Gaygoradarodos
Surf, Strength, Whirlpool, Waterfall
What's a good sixth mon to fill out this framework of a party?
Probably a good bulky pokemon like Umbreon with Dark/Ghost coverage or Miltank as a strong and fast attacker. You could also use another Water pokemon with extra Ice coverage, maybe Slowbro, Poliwrath, Azumarill, or Octillery if you're playing GS?
> Running two NFE tradie mons
Why
No access to trades, you mongtard.
Then why run them in the first place if you don't have a gamer gf to trade with you incel
because Kadabra and Graveler are good anyways, lmao
both are probably the best Pokémon you can get in the game, along with Gyarados
You can get better mons who fill the same niche if you can't trade though. Your team is gay, and so are you.
I've been resetting on-and-off trying to get a shiny Ho-oh in HG. Still no luck so far. It'll turn up one of these days.
>HG/SS or GSC
I prefer Crystal for the better availability in the earlygame. They're all fine though. I still hate the gen 4 engine but HGSS manages to be tolerable somehow.
I like the legendaries
How would you guys rate Octillery performance-wise? Not competitively tho.
I'd say its defining feature is its access to good coverage, even learning Ice Beam through level up. Its got good offenseive stats and decent bulk, but it is very slow, fitting for a literal tank octopus.
I don't have any experience using it in Gen 2 but I used it in bdsp and it was pretty good until the end game. Basing off that it should be solid
Which one of these three has the greatest potential to be the MVP in a GSC run and why?
>one has all three elemental punches, outstanding special attack, and great speed
>another has almost the same special attack and speed, is immune to Normal and Fighting, and can be found before the first gym
>a third can steamroll the early game by itself through typing, offensively and defensively, yet stays situationally useful all the way to Red
>the fourth is an in-game trade and gains experience so much faster
Definitely Abra, having all 3 elemental punches + STAB Psychic on top of Alakazam's monstrous Sp Attack stat makes it a force to be reckon with.
Surely you mean Kadabra.
alakazam is always amazing, and has access to fire/ice/and electric moves
geodude singlehandedly deals with falkner (flying), bugsy (bugs), whitney (resists normal and rollout), you should have magnitude by morty, which deals with his half poison types, jasmine (steel). only things that might give you trouble are chuck, pryce, and claire. and then it comes back to shit on koga and lance.
See
I'm not changing my answer just because you can't trade with anyone.
>implyBlack person trading for trade evolutions is the standard in any given playthrough
It literally is, anon, it's how the game is designed.
Imagine being so wrong.
He's right lol
>samegay
My OG bro in Gold was Machamp back in the early 00s. Fricking demolished everything. Kinda miss him now.
One of the coolest gen 2 related things I've found was this randomizer called "crystal randofuser". It essentially takes a pokemon and fuses their stats, typing, moves etc. with another pokemon to create a whole new thing. I've done several playthroughs with this randomizer and it really is fun seeing what different fusions you end up with and how they can be used compared to their normal counterparts. pic related, it's my starter in my most recent playthrough
remember playing this a while ago. was fun but kind of too easy because the fusions were so much more powerful than regular mons
Do you get the color pallete of one the fused mons?
Hey, y'all. Didn't actually own a gameboy until Ruby came out, so I missed out on actual Gen 2 craze. Is it worth playing through Crystal even if I've played through HG/SS like half a dozen times?
Yes, Crystal has its own charm, not to mention the Gen 2 aesthetics in general.
Cool, is the base game the best way to do it, or are there any romhacks you recommend?
Gen 2 looks nicer than gen 4
Play GS 97 Reforged if you haven't bros. It's an incredibly comfy hack based on the Spaceworld demo. They did a great job at making it an alternate version of GSC.
Here are some screenshots of it.
Where can I view the full Pokédex for this hack? Is there any docs?
>Is there any docs?
Yes, there is one linked on their Discord: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1z_KuM9IO6iZzevSJh0D1zODuFNuIRNAhMBGppW_D-4Q/edit?usp=sharing
All the info is on PokeCommunity if you are interested.
Oh man I keep forgetting to try this out, the demo leak and subsequent source code leaks were so hype. My favorite beta pokemon is the jiangshi panda.
Oh I started playing it and forgot to continue
thanks for remembering me I guess ehe
I don’t get why they didn’t keep these. Gen 2 needs more ghosts
Norowara got reworked into Misdreavus. I'm serious, in Spaceworld 99 Demo Misdreavus's name is still Norowara (despite its already finalized design). The documentation in the gigaleak suggests it was a late change (and probably made because of some legal/copyright reasons, rather than design choice).
But I agree, the two should have coexisted.
Wow, that's interesting, it also shows that the common belief that Gen 2 Pokémon were just "gen 1's left overs" is a load of shit. If idea wasn't considered "good enough" for Gen 1, then it wouldn't have made it into Gen 2 without extreme revisions. Fake fans love to act Gen 2 was just some phoned in crap from Gen 1's cutting floor even though Gen 2 had to follow Gen 1 standard while going out to to way to avoid Gen 1 mistakes, If any gen 2 Pokemon has a controversy like Jynx, it would have been erased forever rather than just recolored.
(none of this is to imply that Gen 1 Pokemon are bad, or even that Gen 2 mons are better than Gen 1's, just that Gen1 is not the untouchable standard some morons think it is) .
These people are simply a modern twist of genwunners. The fanbase always finds a way to suck Kanto's imaginary wiener.
My only issue with this hack is that it does """rebalancing""" on top of coloration to the original 97 space world hack and has shit documentation. Whereas the original uncolored rom even has a stylized player guide.
Any advice on patching the 97 Reforged rom? I've downloaded a fresh rom of Gold and am using LunarIPS but every time I test it, it doesn't run on the emulator, just a white screen.
Try a room from a different course/make sure you're using the correct edition
The base rom for patching is Crystal, not Gold or Silver.

I'm an idiot thank you so much anon
Started playing Gold 97 Reforged and got my bro, I love this little guy.
I'll never not be mad about this being a scrapped design.
At level 20, with a perfect HP DV, 10 HP Ups, and the stat XP from defeating enough Unowns to go from 5 to 20, a Snorlax has 109 HP.
With Leftovers, this is enough to Rest loop through Dragon Rage with 1 HP to spare at the lowest point in the Rest cycle.
Tell me about your Battle Tower strategies, lads.
Been a while since I touched the Crystal BT but IIRC my team was:
>Marowak
>Magmar
>Snorlax
Holy frick OP, do any of those Pokémon have a base stat with 100 points or more?
>Ledian, 110 SpDef
>Magcargo, 120 Def
>Togetic, 105 SpDef
>Gligar, 105 Def
who should I pick for my final team member?
I've been stalling for a while since I can't decide
I don't understand. Is this your team? Or are these the ones you can choose for your sixth?
Definitely a good Rock or Ground type like Golem, Steelix, Sudowoodo, or Rhydon. Maybe even a Fighting type like Machamp or any of the Hitmons.
Thanks was thinking of Hitmontop maybe.
It's my team. The lv 5 Eevee is a placeholder.
Unironically Magmar
Hitmontop is tricky to get but it's such a unique pokemon to use, go for it anon!
>>what are ya playin'
Crystal
>>what Johto things are you enjoying
Definitely not breeding. Currently breeding all the baby mons for the Pokédex.
or GSC?
It's been a decade since I played HGSS, will give it a shot once I'm done with GSC.
Johto mon?
Shuckle
thing about generation 2?
Music
>>what are ya playin'
Pokemon Crystal via randomizer
>>what Johto things are you enjoying
Absolutely everything
or GSC?
All of them!
Johto mon?
Misdreavus
thing about generation 2?
Can't tell, man. There's soo much I adore about it.
>Can't tell, man. There's soo much I adore about it.
I'd say my special favourite is Bug-Catching Contest.
Rewarding the player for finding rare Pokémon and catching them in a hard way, by giving them items
truly a very well-thought feature, wish more areas were like this in Pokémon games
been thinking of trying out Crystal for the first time on emulator (because frick those ebay prices, and living in the middle of nowhere makes retro stores unviable)
only problem being I don't have a decent emulator
used to, its icon was a little grey gba with a rainbow of colors on its screen, but at some point I deleted it and I don't remember its name. any better emulators (or the name of that old one) that you can recommend? have heard bgb is decent...
You could try looking here: https://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/Game_Boy/Game_Boy_Color_emulators
Personally I use mGBA.
Mobile or pc? I use Pizza boy and its by far the best gb/gba emulator ive used
Full picture
Hey OP why didn't you evolve that Togetic? What a waste
I did a full trade evo run of Crystal. I mean obviously they were extremely strong but I just wanted to have fun with mons that I had never used before. I only cheated them in once I got the item in game. Itemless trade evos at the elite 4.
To no one's surprise Scizor and Kingdra are busted, despite the fact that the former only learns Fury Cutter as its only bug move. Politoed is whatever, it ended up eating all the water HMs. The hardest carry though was Golem. Geodude destroys early game fights covering Chikorita's weaknesses and in a game where Mareep doesn't exist, especially with gen 2 learnsets where everything has normal moves. Also EQ by leveling up. I don't want to hear how Rock/Ground is a bad type every again.
Thinking of taking them to the Battle Tower just for completionist purposes.
