Dudunsparce only turned out the way it did is Dunsparce idled is based on a yokai that’s known for being an underwhelming joke (though game freak could have don’t a little more than copy pasting an segment. there’s nothing inherently jokey about Ledian’s concept so it’s evolution wouldn’t end up as one.

To be fairl, no pure normal type could compete with Snorlax back then except for Gen1 Tauros, KANTOOOO Privilege was that that strong. Ursalung was fine for the average fully evolved Pokémon (at least later gens)

I really don't like how gamefreak seems to suddenly obsess over a certain line for a period of time and give it multiple forms, evolutions and boosts in consecutive gens, like it did with charizard, greninja and now ursaring for some reason. It always feels artificial instead of being done for rebalancing purposes or out of love for the mon, like when they aped Yokai Watch during gen 7 and stole a lot of design elements from it.
It gives me the impression they saw a poll that says japanese kids' favorite animal is bears right now, so they went all in on that, or something similar.
