Any immersion was killed by morons who only care about endgame and raids. Thanks to them, the developers no longer give a flying dick about game world or interesting quests, the whole focus is on endgame bosses that don't even have a lore.
Yeah it's kind of a weird catch. I want a game where I feel like I can explore, quest and just be immersed in but everything is so gamified it feels like everything is just a funnel. Being able to raid and power up is fun, but I also just want to find some nice scenery and maybe hang out by a cool waterfall or something sometimes.
It doesn't help that games have also become so meta that you're basically robbed of any real freedom of design and growth. You can't just make your character your way. You have to follow the build guides. And even if you want to quest, there's too many markers or some homosexual in every regions who's done every quest before rushing things along.

The optimal MMO is just Ganker. MMOs have nothing interesting in them past the first N00 hours where you exhaust them of all their content. Past that the only things to do are waste your life doing daily chores or attempt to socialize in an atmosphere almost specifically designed to be as bad as possible. There's no way to return back to your old days of being 12 and just sitting around in the grass in Varrock chatting with noobs because the things you want to socialize have evolved beyond what the people you'll find in MMOs are capable of or interested in talking about, and even if there are people that would want to talk about what you want to talk about, MMOs provide no means to locate them and their lack of being conducive to those social interactions both makes it less likely their players will include interesting people, and less likely that the remaining interesting people would ever talk about the interesting things.
All MMOs are dogshit, the only genre worse is mobile games

While I think that some games do have egregious grinds to level cap (especially kmmos), I think that your average MMO player today is just not interested in power progression. They don't give a shit about the quality of the progression, they're going to rush through or skip EVERYTHING that they can, no matter how "fun" it is, to get to endgame as quickly as possible.
I think this is most apparent in games that have old raids and dungeons that players prefer to just skip, and request it to be skippable if it isn't. It doesn't matter how that used to be the endgame ("the fun content" that you grinded to get to), if it isn't something you do at max ilvl they don't want to do it. They unironically wish for there to be less valuable content in their games if it means they can get to max power level faster.

I hate how multiplayer sandbox-type games basically can't exist now because of how solitary the market has become. SoT and New World are two off the top of my head that had a lot of fun to be had around launch if you actually engaged with people, but were both flatly derided for their terrible solo content.
New world's group content was pretty dogshit, but, it was slightly better than how fricking terrible the solo shit was.
Group PVP was obvious the focus, but, 99% of the player base never experienced it.
The "problem" with social community games is that you can't really have a social community anymore these days. Especially in a game setting where people can compete. Everything has to be safe. It's like we're in a nerf world and it's only a matter of time before someone gets banned for PvPing in a PvP server or zone.

SoT for instance. First few months after launch were full of making friends and stabbing people in the back after HOURS of playing, and doing wacky shit with other boats. But your average player just wants a game he can play without any human engagement minus maybe his friends, so the game focused on shitty pve stuff from then out. I guess they did make it "safer" with the boat type caps on servers or whatever (which definitely didn't help keep the socialgays engaged), but they aren't going to ban you for being a total fricking butthole. That's what the game was made for.

I really do think there should at least be more thought put into the lore or role play aspects of character creation. It's so boring when everyone can be everything as anything. It feels like nobody has to put into any thought beyond the visual aspect of their character.

100% true, not to mention, when you've been gaming for over a decade and have played many MMOs over the years, or any genre really, you will realise there are particular red flag moments in early gameplay that strongly indicate that you wont like the game or that its poorly designed in XYZ areas.

I played wow on my own volition (private vanilla server, then for real on an early tbc patch retail) and tried it out for the first time at level 1, without seeing endgame play, and i really liked it, i knew it was slow, but it was obvious there was a realm charm and X factor to the game, despite the bare bones appearance. Good games are obvious in most cases to veteran gamers, you just get a sense for it.
Haven't read the thread, but isn't that kinda the point of an MMO? The genre is explicitly about being a huge timesink. Without massive grinds there's just not much substance left to any of them. This could change in the future. It's possible a game comes out that actually utilizes the "massively multiplayer" portion of it. For now, though, it's just a grindfest where you sometimes see other people who are also grinding and occasionally you'll team up with people to grind together. That's what MMO players want.

You played a bad MMO. A good MMO has a strong focus on community interaction and features to facilitate this. Star Wars Galaxies did this by making crafting a neccessity for the best gear. If you didn't spec into it you asked for a master in whatever you wanted. Let's say ships. That guy would need other things from other crafters. That meant everyone knew one another. You always knew who the best crafters were and how to get the best gear. And you actually talked and socialized with people as opposed to click through a glorified visual novel on your way to the next fetch quest. Plus SWG figured out seamless multicrew space ship interiors in 2004 and Elite dangerous in 2022 can't fricking figure it out.

So much, that the entire game becomes priced via irl economic contributions.
ff14 is unique case of being poor version of single-player FF (which themselves have been mediocre for a long time) mixed with forced group battlez. The ultimate and savage raids are fun, but the best ones were in ARR and HW and all the jobs got homogenized continually until current state of everything the same.

Jesus, games should never be considered from the pov of the journalist. As an industry, yes it does hurt the future of it as a profitable source, but this issue should be seen from the players' pov. Time economics have changed with social tech, and now players give up much more to devote themselves to a single game. The idea that these journalists would even CONSIDER themselves players is absurd, when they give up money to not play it and basically never have to play a single social meta. In fact, they are the social meta and playing an mmo as a non-influencer is just a walk through hell.

The thing is though, in the early days of WoW and the like, I actually ENJOYED the grind. I liked going to new regions solving quests and getting immersed in the world by having to hunt and search for things. I once walked miles and miles of in game world to meet up with my friends who did the same from the opposite direction. I only ever raided very little but it felt like the game was rewarding me to keep playing just by playing.
I don't mind grind per se if there's reward at a decent clip, but it just isn't that way anymore.
I feel like early WoW had a decently solid spread of rewards and milestones. The first one was grinding up to get your first mount. What was it level 40 the first time? When you first got your ride it was a huge game changer. It felt actually rewarding and like you achieved something. Now it feels like you just get one for showing up like this was the goddamn Oprah show. There's no build up. No immersion.
That's when the actual WORLD aspect of WoW mattered and was the focus of the devs. It all changed in TBC, which was the worst thing that happened to WoW and set the game direction forever.
I like a game that lets you explore the world. Finding quests out in the wilds was a reward because it meant you found a new source of XP. There was a reason to want to get out there. To find stuff and when you did it was a bit exciting. Now it's all just streamlined which is the problem.
And also to give meaning between players.

That's one of the aspects, other one is social - cooperation with people, competition with other people, making friends and interacting with other players to overcome obstacles, which helps to form bonds. Most MMOs nowadays completely abandoned this one.
