Why is this game the standard by which you judge an entire genre in a era when there are more games released than ever before by a factor of ten?
10 pounds of garbage in a 1 pound sack
you have to dig like hell to find a good jrpg on steam. the good ones aren't the ones getting featured in any way, because steam is pozzed.

Octopath is the one series where the term "soulful" fits better than ever before, for me personally at least. I absolutely loved my entire 60-hour journey through 1 last year, and I'm excited to play 2 this year, too.

Octopath Traveler had good gameplay. Shame about the pixel art with all of the movie filters plastered over it, and the the story. 8 different stories that go nowhere.

While the stories are in fact simple, they still manage to fit some character development and decently interesting events (depends on the story), I really liked how every story eventually tied into the post-game superboss stuff too.
I actually get not liking it, there's plenty of faults with the story and gameplay, and even visuals to an extent. But the vehement, vitriolic hatred for it I see here all the time does indeed look crazy.
Let me quote the unrivaled best girl in a certain eastern cartoon show.

None of the characters interact with one another. How is the game soulful?
They do though. Perhaps not as much as it would be typical for party-based RPGs, but they do. But even then, the "soul" is not just about in-party character interactions, for me at least. If that's all you're looking for though, I can definitely see how you would be disappointed with OT.

This is what the SE genre has come to, yes. But no, it does not represent JRPGs, it is more of a WRPG then anything tbh, as are the fans of such games.

octopath is a good game, but it is gamepass tier. I beat the first one on gamepass,l but it is not worthy of 50$, for 20 bucks yes, but 50 no no no.

They should just keep making brand new SNES games. People make homebrew to this day so a big company like Square Enix releasing physical cartridges for the SNES or, even cheaper, disc-based PSX games, would sell like crack cocaine. I'm talking millions of copies sold, at least at first before the novelty wears off. We are in the most nostalgia-driven market in human history where people are throwing their bank accounts away chasing their childhood, and companies are putting out the most low effort crap they can. Octopath is mobile-tier. Does it even have a 4:3 aspect ratio? That's bare minimum.

Play Shin Megami Tensei 3 Nocturne and go for the true demon ending. Best JRPG experience and nothing could ever beat it.
I get how people can not like OT1. I don't get how people can not like OT2.
