Swords were hella expensive, knives on sticks(or even just pointy sticks) were the most common.

yeah, now go drag your fricking 18 foot long piece of wood around a town and then the wilderness for an entire journey
also good luck trying to have an effective formation with only 3 others like is usual in jrpgs
try to not just parrot youtubers and think for yourselves a little next time

Bait but you're almost sort of right
Swords were worn by nobility and professional soldiers for self defense during the Renaissance, leading to commoners associating them together. In Japan, only Samurai were allowed to carry swords in town limits, which led to the same thing. Most actual fighting on battlefields was done with polearms, maces, and axes, as anyone will tell you.

History shows that the medieval adventuring party had a guy with a machete, a guy with a woodcutters axe, a girl with a bow, and a girl with a walking stick. Not until the local lord hired them were they allowed to carry swords.

Yeah armies and travelers did that for thousands of years.
          >also good luck trying to have an effective formation with only 3 others like is usual in jrpgs
Polearms are superior in one on one combat, according to various ancient and medieval sources

I know this makes me a turbo weeb
But I really wish guns were never invented.
Just have swords and shields and shit. Obviously that makes no sense, but it would be cool as shit.
    Maybe bows.

Because other weapons just suck. Even in games where I can use a zillion different things I go for a sword/greatsword 99% of the time. I dunno why, sometimes I'll look at a flail or great axe and thing it looks badass, but never enough to part me from a sword.

Swords are more of a status symbol or self-defense weapon than a battlefield one. The MC using a sword is basically him solidifying himself as being above everyone else, as if he's some kind of nobility.

Probably because of King Arthur. Frickin everyone knows about excalibur.
